  1. I generally like Jim Palmer but when they played the Brewers he referred to Carlos Villanueva as "Villanova" whereupon his partner promptly called him "Villareal".
  2. I've got to go with Parra for the Brewers.
  3. The Long Season by Jim Brosnan about the '59 Cardinals/Reds. First of the expose type book. The Natural by Bernard Malamud if you want a more literary type.
  4. Terrible deal for Cleveland. Mediocre pitcher in Masterson, Hagedone off TJ surgery and an A pitcher with a 6.5 ERA. Good job Shapiro. Heads should be rolling in Cleveland in the off season.
  5. Not sure if this is the right place to put this but thought it might be interesting to look at walk rates for the full season squads. In my experience, the Brewers have always been a free swinging outfit. I thought Wheeler, in particular, seemed to get a lot of walks compared to his often meager hitting. So here goes: Nashville--excellent Gamel and Heether both with a walk less than every six at bats. Gillespie is also decent. Bad Katin almost 26 at bats for every walk. Bourgeois and Escobar also not good. Huntsville--Less than six at bats per walk for Lucroy, Raburn and Melillo. Rottino, Anderson and Green doing pretty good. Caufield and Parejo not doing well. Brevard--Wheeler, as expected, less than 6 at bats per walk. Gindl doing okay. Farris and Schafer the worst. These two need to work on this. Wisconsin--Less than seven at bats per walk for Kjeldgaard, McCraw, Delaney, Dennis and Kemp. Lawrie doing pretty well and Dykstra at least did that okay at Wisconsin. Trejo and Miller awful. Trejo is the worst (by far) in the organization. Marseco and Sanchez not good either. Let's see if they can improve on this today.
  6. If you are one who thinks Jeremy has been treated unfairly, think about this: how would you like to go to the plate with your future depending on it, facing a 100 mph pitcher who may be stoned? I certainly wouldn't. This certainly helps explain the lack of control this year. I wish him the best but expect nothing from now on.
  7. I'm just the opposite. I prefer the regular season. Even though the games don't mean as much, you get a much better idea of the skills of the players. Almost anything goes in the playoffs. It's painful for me to watch that type of hockey. Anybody who could see Ovechkin play day in and day out like I have would instantly become an NHL fan. Can't stand the Pens. Nothing against the city of Pittsburgh but these guys get totally preferential treatment as far as I'm concerned. Deliberate cross check to a goalie's neck gets a $5 fine? Give me a break. If Brashear had done that he'd have been suspended for a year.
  8. No one has mentioned the possibility of injury. I noticed at the end of last year he didn't seem to be throwing well either. It kind of shocked me as someone who doesn't see the Brewers as regularly. He seemed to have a plus arm in the games I had seen him before. The ESPN announcers also said something about a hand injury. I hadn't heard that. They think it's hurting his power. Anyway, I believe there may well be elbow/shoulder issues that we just don't know about. It's strange he would drop off this much all of a sudden. He did have a fairly long run of decent production before this period. I'm sure the other teams knew before this about the slider.
  9. Lastings Milledge blew off two practices and was sent to AAA earlier. I'm sure the remaining players were read the riot act. They had been warned. With Dukes' previous behavior, he should have been on better behavior.
  10. My brother started off at Marquette and was able to transfer to Madison after one year. They will always have some attrition after the first year. That could be a possibility also.
  11. In my opinion, Bando gets somewhat of a bad rap. It was really Harry Dalton who began the decline of the Brewers minor league system. True, Sal did not improve on what Dalton was doing but he was no worse. Selig was the common denominator. For example, in Harry's last 8 drafts from the top 10 rounds, he had 14 hitters and 8 pitchers make it to the majors. Only non cup of coffee ones were: Surhoff, Sheffield, Spiers, Listach and Matheny for the hitters and Henry, Navarro, Sparks and Eldred for the pitchers. Also, Garciaparra and Alex Fernandez were drafted but not signed. Bando had 12 hitters and 12 pitchers make it from his 8 years of drafting. Mark Loretta, Ronny Belliard, Jenkins and Bill Hall were the significant hitters. Pitchers were: Karl, D'Amico, Wunsch, Woodard, Peterson, Neugebauer and Sheets. Harry probably gets the edge in hitters and Sal in pitchers. I feel that Harry Dalton dismantled much of the organization put in place by Frank Lane from which he, Dalton, profitted greatly. Bando, on the other hand, inherited a mess. That said, does Sal Bando deserve recognition? Probably not. He should look to the A's for that.
  12. No votes for Plesac or Greg Vaughn?
  13. DC isn't a small market Bear in mind that Angleos controls some of the Nats' TV revenue and take a look at their attendance last year. Major transportation problems, bad part of town, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the O's still get involved. It's his home town and the Orioles could do something in a year or two when their main pitching prospects are ready. The Nats are hopeless at the moment and likely to continue as such as long as Bowden is here.
  14. The should have let Donald Brashear or the new boyfriends take care of it. That's the way things are usually done in hockey.
  15. So does this mean that Wieters is going to start the season with the big league club? Yeah, the Washington Post reported yesterday that the O's planned to make the switch next year and were shopping Hernandez. I think it's a good move for them. They need to get younger.
  16. Kendall caught a ridiculous amount of games for somebody of his age. It undoubtedly affected his hitting the second half of the year. Someone can post the splits but he was certainly better than the '07 Kendall until fatigue kicked in. Hopefully, it may be of some use for Bill Hall. Not hoping for too much though.
  17. Those Rottino stats are cherry picked. If he is a bench player, he will not be a full time catcher. 2 previous Nashville years: .314/.379/.440/.819 and .289/.363/.446/.809. Much better than you give him credit for. He should be able to produce an adequate amount for a bench player. I wish some of the big team players had those OBP numbers.
  18. I like the move of bringing in Randolph. They should make Weeks his special project. I have often thought giving him a mentor might help somewhat. I noticed in David Pinto's defensive stats which are now coming out on Baseball Musings, Weeks didn't do all that badly. Seems like he was around the middle of the pack and Hardy was basically number one at shortstop among the regular SS's. Hmm. Better pitching seems to have improved the middle infield ranges.
  19. Stats from '57 vs '08 NL HR per team 147 in '57 to 163 in '08. SLG .400 to .413. A lot of that could easily be explained by today's bandbox style stadia. Walks 483 to 551. K's 769 to 1128. That is where there is a huge difference. Lot more walks and a lot more strikeouts. These are causing more pitches. Spahn never had 200 K's in a season despite more IP. He won the Cy Young for both leagues in '57 despite only 111 K's. A pitch to contact guy like Spahn could possibly never make the majors today, rightly or wrongly.
  20. Best season ever by a Brewer pitcher (apologies to Rollie).
  21. Best season ever by a Brewer pitcher (apologies to Rollie).
  22. Lead off double by Maybin.
