  1. When St. Louis played in Milwaukee earlier this year we were sitting in a sea of Cardinals fans. There was, however, one obnoxious, very drunk Brewer fan. About halfway through the game he went on a very loud, yet well thought out rant directed at the Cardinals fans questioning how they can cheer for Peralta but boo Braun. It was a thing of beauty. I dont know if there is a group of fans I hate more than them.
  2. I worry more about guys like Dan Haren, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samadzija. The market for Hamels and Cueto is going to be very limited. Teams looking for starters will hold out until July rather than settle for Lohse or Garza (who would be a pure salary dump). There's plenty of very good starting pitchers out there who figure to be available at a reasonable cost to the buying team. Not good for the Brewers who's best trade chip might be K-Rod. Kazmir is undergoing a MRI today I think?
  3. True...BUT...He DID lie, and he did pull that law and order work around I have expensive lawyers and you don't angle. The public loves to tear down big shots and surrounding yourself with lawyers instead of aw shucks I'll take my medicine was a gross mistake. At the end of the day, the guy has 9 digits coming to him so I suppose cheating, lying, and lawyering up was a winning strategy. I am a big golfer. You don't cheat in golf. If you do, and I mean little things, and are caught, its over. I suppose that is why Im so tough on Braun. I don't support the "everyone does it" POV. But that is clearly just me.
  4. I never got the pitcher hitting 8th. I was going to mention this but I was hoping my box score was incorrect. Seems like one of those too cute moves that at best doesnt matter, at worst kills rallys. How about we actually work the count and swing at hitters pitches instead of sliders in the dirt?
  5. I know I've told this story on here before, but every time Sheffield comes up I think about this and chuckle. Back in the spring of 1992, my parents took me to Spring Training for the first time. We pulled into the hotel, and there was a sign "Home of the Milwaukee Brewers!" We were staying in the same hotel as the team. Our second night there, we realized we had 2 players staying in the room next to ours. Those players were Kevin Brown (not the good pitcher) and Gary Sheffield. Our third night, they were having some sort of party in their room... loud music, yelling, loud laughing. My parents called the front desk numerous times to try to get them quieted down, but had no luck. We finally got to sleep, woke up in the morning, turn on SportsCenter to see that Sheffield had been traded to the Padres. So we had experienced his going away party! I sat in my hotel room, watched Sheffield carry all of his stuff to his car, and drive out of the Brewers organization. I'll chime in and say a prospect that I missed out on was Jorge De La Rosa. I was so excited when we got him from Arizona. I was at his first start with the Brewers and I remember telling my dad "This guy is going to be our next ace!" Oops! We all tend to look so closely at stats and on the field physics of their abilities that we forget they are people off the field. I look at the Lawrie off the field pics that made his trade all the more understandable.
  6. Thats fine, though i dont share these opinions, I cant say you are wrong. I can say that had Braun behaved more like Cruz, this would have been pretty much gone by now. Back on topic, I still dont think it will affect his ASG selection just because he is so far above anyone else for us. However, if there was a choice, Braun wouldn't go because ASG is not supposed to be about boing on that stage.
  7. I just worry more or less that Braun is once again a top 5-10 Batter for MLB and a trade right now due to 2014 and Peds would net something like he's a top 40-50 batter. Selling too low. You'd have to think a Braun trade would happen right near the deadline if not on it so he's going to have 2 more months to prove this current form is really his ability and not just a hot 1month stretch. It is kinda hard finding the teams that would really use a Braun for upgrade. He is of course an upgrade, but is it enough of an upgrade over what you're replacing him with and the cost in prospects? I'm just not sure if a team should look to fill their OF if their current one is around 765-850OPS. And the Grey area of 735-764? Arizona. Would replacing Ender Incierte for Braun be worth it? at the cost of say Jake Lamb, Braden Shipley or Aaron Blair, plus a couple other prospects? I don't think their pitching is strong enough...though its early on Bradley and Patrick Corbin will return at some point in June...so there's going to be a month+ to determine if Bradley/Corbin are capable to seek out a trade for a playoff push. I look at NYM as the most likely spot. Their OF offense is brutal (728, 594, 710 OPS) and Braun would be a huge upgrade for them. They have a farm system that fits. I don't see them giving up Syndegraad but you never know. A Gomez + Braun trade would net us virtually every key young player/prospect they have and set us up for years.
  8. Braun is booed because he lied about it so much before having to admit his sins. If he keeps hitting like this and keeps his head down the booing will disappear. It seems to be dying down already. Agreed. If he keeps hitting and doesn't say a word he will be OK. I doubt the ASG decision will be turning him down due to PEDs. He is clearly the most deserving. KRod has been OK, maybe think outside the box and go Blazek. Other than that, the team is 16-32, so do the math for the ASG selection. Had he played in NY during the throwing the courier under the bus, he would have been in ARoid villain territory.
  9. They gave us Blazek last year, so there is precedent to trade with these guys. Go for it Melvin.
  10. Mets need to make a splash. Braun, Gomez, and Segura and we get our choice of 5 players and we take a bad contract OF back.
  11. I am no fan of Braun's anymore obviously, but the guy is absolutely killing the ball. Now is the time to trade him. If the Brewers key prospects were showing any signs of life Id listen to keeping him, but now there is no way. The list of key players trending down vs up on the farm is really disturbing. The farm isnt working. Time to give the team a shot in the arm.
  12. The problem wasn't the manager be it, Yost, RR, or CC. You can't fire the players. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but the problem with this team was the complete lack of any kind of amateur talent evaluation for a decade.
  13. Braun isn't an asset with his age, general frailness, and his extension unless he is hitting the way he is hitting right now. Right now, he has trade value, probably significant trade value. Who knows in 2016 or 2017? Since the Brewers are currently 16-31 with no sign of life. Anyone who can bring back young, elite, controllable assets should be moved. If Miguel Cabrera was available right now - 5/$100...would you sign him? I would if I was a competitive team fully knowing that he may not be valuable in 2019/2020. That's a steal. Braun and Cabrera, WAR-wise, were both 5-7 WAR guys until 2013/2014 when Braun's scandal/injury hit. Cabrera is a year older. This is the best comparison I can think of off the top of my head, but you get the idea. There will be a line of teams willing to take on 5/$100. Id think so as well..right now. He goes back on the DL or back to his April ways and the answer is no. Also, looking at the current Brewers record even with him hitting the way he has lately..AND...the current minor league performance of some of our more elite prospects and you have to strongly consider this thing needs a serious infusion of young talent. How do we bring that on? Trade current assets.
  15. No one is trading for Garza right now. I had hopes he would string together 3-4 good starts but that isn't likely to happen. Braun's value is the highest its been since 2012. Trade assets on the way up, not the way down.
  16. Long night indeed. It might be time to admit the cupboard is really bare. I tend to look forward to starts by Wang, Kodi, and Devin Williams but they all continue to disappoint.
  17. Segura is definitely a sell low guy. I would keep him. Braun continues to confuse. I don't want any part of him the man and that contract, but the guy has had an incredible May, MVP caliber good. I tend to think he has significant trade value now. Offense is hard to come by, and while his contract is crippling to Milwaukee, it is nothing to big market teams. I don't know who is on his no trade list. I have to think some team will look at his May and figure the fresh start will make for a good acquisition. Boston, for example doesn't care about PED's and he would fit in nicely there. LA would as well, though we would need to take OF bad contract back as part of the deal. Braun is a guy who is one swing away from his next oblique DL trip, so if there is a market, and i think there would be, the Brewers need to act now.
  18. I still look at the Cubs and Astros model. Yes they stunk for years but look at them now. The Brewers have some interesting assets in Gomez, Braun, and Lucroy but they are 16-31. How much worse would they be without them? They are only getting older and more fragile by the day. Why not turn those three into 6-8 top 100 prospects, and likely 1 top 10 and several top 50's. Draft Aiken and have the first pick in the draft in 2016. To me, thats a lot more exciting than riding three good players into the ground and still having the worst record in baseball.
  19. Oh, man. I missed on...Gary Sheffield. As in, "I missed his being here''....because as soon as he left Milwaukee, he chased the Triple Crown in San Diego. He was a horse's ----, but he could hit. Oh boy, could he hit. Sheffield has to be among anyone's top 5 Brewers bad memories. They guy was a mega talent from day one and had no desire to play here.
  20. I talked to Dan Duquette about this one about five years ago, Dan was working for the Brewers at the time Milwaukee took Surhoff. He told me Surhoff's agent really wanted to have the top pick that year, so he made a deal with the Brewers to get that done. Basically, BJ was a little bit cheaper than some of the other guys who were available - the Brewers liked Surhoff plenty, but money tipped the scales and made him the top pick. I believe that. I remember that draft quite well. I recall Harry Dalton admitting BJ was a bit of a surprise but he kept mentioning how they loved is make up and how difficult it was to land a quality catcher. At the time, Will Clark, Witt, Larkin, and Bonds were the names at 1, so Surhoff was a surprise, though he was definitely a top 10 guy.
  21. That is the Herb Kohl style of sports management. I think the painful moves and long 4 years by the Cubs and Astros, and incredible turnover of the Braves has to make Mark A think tough.
  22. I think the BJ and Weeks comparison is valid. Both good guys, decent players but hardly the mega stars they were supposed to become. In the case of BJ, he became a much better player once he left Milwaukee and left the catcher position. Guys like Nieves, Braggs, BJR, Wegman could all fill out a prospects that never did what we thought they would do too.
  23. All of the trades except for Marcum and Lee were acceptable at the time they were made. Lee was a forced trade to land ONLY major league assets. They were not in the prospect business then. Sad. I never understood giving up Lawrie for a decent but not great starting pitcher. Then when Lawrie posted a 3.6 WAR in 43 games in 2011, I was about ready to pass out if I saw one more highlight. It was only in the offseason I learned of his absurd off the field behavior, so it became more clear. I still don't think they leveraged his asset value at the time, but ultimately I saw why they got rid of him. Since 2011, he has been a pretty average to bad player. Of course Marcum is long gone too, so it was much to do about nothing. I can't say Im happy Cain and Brantley are gone now, but CC and Grienke were excellent here and served their purpose. Actually, had MLB not valued Tex higher than CC, the Brewers would have wound up with Trout. Yes, I like to beat myself up over the past.
  24. I don't call BJ a 'miss'. He had a long, very servicable career. 2300 hits, 34 WAR, 1100 RBI. He wasn't a superstar, but he was good enough to hang around 19 years and compile a good (not great) war. Was he worthy of a #1 pick? No, probably not, but a lot of #1 picks don't even stick for 5 years. I was always a Surhoff fan. I think we could go all day on prospects that never scratched the big leagues, so maybe I read the OP wrong. I picked BJ not because he was a bust, not at all, but because he never was a true star like most everyone assumed he would become. As I mentioned, I was a huge fan of his. However, his time with Milwaukee, in particular, was pretty meh. Then, there is this list: http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?draft_type=junreg&query_type=year_round&draft_round=1&year_ID=1985
  25. But honestly, right now does it matter if we put a "hot player" on the field? We're not winning, and not going to be a playoff team, so as we trade away some players (whether we go all in or not), we should really just let some young players get their feet wet and showcase their talent at the MLB level. If they don't feel that Taylor is ready, finish the year with Schafer at CF. Maybe we can finally get an idea on whether he's a valid backup OF candidate or a guy we should jettison. We need to stop worrying about whether a move we make this year will hurt us for the rest of the year. The rest of the year doesn't matter... that's why we're trading guys away. I know tanking doesn't help as much in baseball, but having the first pick isn't a bad thing. I really like Gomez, but we need to be real about how healthy he will be in the next 1 1/2 years and his chances of being a Brewer in 2017.
