  1. It is too bad we won't be getting Manny Machado then Yes. I'm hoping this is all just paper talk getting lathered up with no other deadline hot topics to report on. Moving Peralta, Burnes, or even a Nottingham for a rental seems 100% something Stearns would not do. Nottingham is not stopping us from getting Machado. I can’t imagine where he would be a headliner for any meaningful trade, and certainly not for Machado. We have no idea what Stearns will do or not do. His body of work isn’t extensive.
  2. Nottingham taking lessons from Vogt on throwing out base stealers.
  3. So what are we going to do with Parker?
  4. One other issue is Dozier has been a great 2nd half hitter.
  5. 66 games at 3rd, 21 at SS, 1 at 2nd. Both guys are premium offensive infielders though Dozier is having a down year by his standards. It would be interesting to see their price tag.
  6. They are talking to every team about potential players who are available. It's just a matter of what leaks, how it's twisted, etc. I would have a tough time imagining a high ranking team official is say anything other than propaganda to the media.
  7. Agreed. If I’m the Orioles I’d love to take Sheffield ++ from their system. Actually that’s probably the only offer I’d consider unless someone else wants to beat that offer by a lot.
  8. They don’t have to trade him to the Brewers. They pick from multiple strong offers and play them against each other.
  9. Their motivations (right now) are: 1. To keep contending this year. 2. To shed some $ so that they can acquire a need but remain under the luxury tax threshold. That said, the one thing you're right about is that they probably aren't giving up Smith. Maybe they'd give away Panik to somebody or attach Hunter Pence to something of relative value, I don't know. If I'm correct in my assumptions, they're going to have to do something that is a bit uncharacteristic. They may have to give away Melancon (and pay 90% of the next 2 years of his deal) or give Pence away (and pay a bunch of this year). You don't normally see established vets that have a connection to the franchise get dealt away a competitive year for nitpicky financial issues often, but it's obviously a business. The NBA has brought that sort of accounting to the sports page, why not baseball? I can see them dumping salary but Smith is a prime asset at a position always of great need to contending teams. Jennings and Barnes are bullpen fillers so this would be close to a fire sale price which wouldn’t likely happen if Smith was truly on the block.
  10. They wouldn't. But I guess it's how "prospect" is defined. Taylor Williams, for example, isn't technically a prospect but he does have 6 years of control- so basically the same thing. In fact, even better from the Giants point of view since he's more proven than prospects who haven't made it to MLB yet. I’d think Taylor Williams would be a reasonable starting point for us. Smith is a power lefty having a monster year, so I’d think if they made him available they could do pretty well in a trade though.
  11. I don’t think the Orioles have hardly any leverage, they’ve completely botched the Machado trade, not having traded him before the season. They don’t have much leverage because teams can look at other options. Angelos family are idiots They have literally all the leverage. They have by several accounts 7 teams giving them bids on Machado. There is no equivalent to Machado on the market. That is the definition of leverage. Now, what they will do with that leverage is a different story, since as you correctly pointed out their ownership is horrible.
  12. Why would the Giants give up Smith for anything less than a quality prospect?
  13. We could offer them Phil Bickford for Smith. Heck I'd even include Jett Bandy! What a deal! Only if they throw in Ramon Flores.
  14. The Orioles have a mountain of leverage here because they set up the Yankees and Red Sox into the mix when I am not sure either team needs him.
  15. Didn’t he offer Darvish a $100M contract?
  16. I would hate to sell Arcia at this point. The guy is a year removed from a 15 HR season with future GGs
  17. Good low buy candidate. He can pitch when he has his head and arm are screwed on correctly.
  18. Well, obviously he sucks and they overpaid. Obviously.
  19. How would we feel if we woke up to the news that the Cubs got him?
  20. Do we really know that, though? His price will likely be lower now that it hypothetically was before the season. Either the price will be affordable in a team's eyes, or TB won't find a buyer. I don't see this as the time Stearns suddenly decides to throw caution to the wind. I think we do. He is a 29 year old with a live arm who is signed pending team options through 2021. That profile is never cheap. The Rays turned down some big packages prior to 2018. What makes anyone think we can get him for a meaningful discount now?
  21. People are getting a little salty over this. Machado can hit and we need hitting. It’s not that complicated.
  22. The problem is his price won’t be change of scenery, it will be TOR level and he isn’t that sort of player.
  23. What happens if we trade for him and need him to sub in at 3rd occasionally? Will he do it willingly? Its also generally not good to throw a me-first player into a contending clubhouse. Pro atheletes in general and certainly baseball players seem to be incredible jerks. Machados odd stance is sadly not unique. It just comes with the territory. Sogard will play anywhere you ask him, but he won’t help anyone win. I wish there were more Robin Younts than Bryce Harpers and Chris Carpenters but that isn’t the case.
  24. They tried really hard to get a starter, up to offering Darvish a $100M contract. Seems like they were waiting to pull the trigger on a move or two depending on the teams performance and what holes needed to be filled.
