  1. Puig>Braun. I hope you're factoring in total picture (contract, youth) and not ability to play baseball next season. I think it would be a no brainer if you could pick one player to play next season that everyone would take Braun. For trade purposes though, due to youth I think Puig would be better than Braun due to age/upside. It's not an easy trade to work with LAD. If they needed a catcher I think it would be a perfect matchup, but they don't. They also have no need for Lind.
  2. Chorizo, I agree. When someone rips on MLB to me and I know they love the NFL (as everyone does) I always say that back. The difference I see is that most NFL plays can be instant replayed no matter what happens. A routine pitch down the middle without a swing, or a low outside ball, etc, have no replay value. Length of game here was only brought up in terms of how each league would fit in Vegas. Not an overall discussion on which is better or anything. Essentially, there's a ton of shows in Vegas that are ballpark 2 hours. 3-4 hours, not so much and MLB would need to be played well off strip. A 2 hour basketball show right on the strip should work like any other show.
  3. Unless Grandal was part of the package back. This would excite me. Get back a younger, competent catcher and replace a fading one? A deal the Brewers should be looking to get. Plus it would add a switch hitter to our lineup which gives it some versatility. For the same reason you love it, why would they do it then? Give up a young cost controlled guy for a 30 yr old you're going to have to pay big in the next two years. I think Grandal fell off a bit at the end of the year and I don't have his stats handy but I would guess most would take him straight up over Lucroy based on a combination of youth/contract/ability.
  4. Yes they try to keep an NBA in a 2 hour TV timeframe and they usually slightly go over. I thought I saw MLB this year with the new emphasis on speed only got the times down 2:55ish. For the NHL, people that are into it are really into it. And of course live hockey is amazing. On average though it is the least popular of the big 4 sports by a large margin, which explains whey they can't even get playoff games on major network TV and I think only the weekend Finals games, could be wrong on that though and the Finals are all on major. Almost no regular season games on major networks.
  5. I don't think they have a use for Lucroy though with Grandal in place already. Would be the ideal way to trade Braun if not for that being in the way.
  6. Urias is probably the most untradeable prospect in baseball right now. With Friedman running the show now it's going to take a young, controlled superstar to get him. Trout and Harper are probably the only guys they would consider for him. Prospects are simply not that valuable, especially to teams with $300M payrolls. That said, I don't think 30+ Braun and mediocre-2015 Lucroy are what they would want for Urias. While you're not wrong in this point, anyone running a big money team like this should be looking at the Yankees the last 15 year for exactly what not to do. Having young cost controlled players consistently coming up will allow for big contracts when needed at other spots (Greinke, Kershaw, etc.) I want nothing to do with Puig. I do think they're a possible partner for Braun though so could lead to something. Though I think we'll just keep Braun.
  7. I'm heavy Vegas regular and I think the only sport that would work is NBA. I know the NHL is almost a done deal to get a team there but I think it will have the same problems as PHX and other warm weather places have had and just overall NHL isn't as popular as NBA to average people who are visiting. Baseball is supposed to be an outdoor sport and it's just too hot there. The game is just too slow and boring for Vegas and I don't think you could really put a baseball stadium on the strip the way the NBA/NHL can. The arena is right on the strip and I would expect them to sell out most weekend games. It's an uptempo thing that lasts 2 hours and will be like any other show on the strip that costs $100-120. Even if you're not from there but OKC (or whatever big time team) is in town while you are, you'll at least look into going. It would also be a free agent destination so if they get a good team there locally, it will be huge, just like the old UNLV teams were. And that was 25 years ago when the city wasn't anywhere near what it is now. Well I suppose NFL too because that could work most anywhere these days, people are so nuts about the NFL.
  8. One has to wonder if this was a big point on why our coaches were let go. Tough pill to swallow seeing those guys pitch so well for other teams. Happy for them. But tough to swallow. And maybe speaks to our huge problems developing starting pitching for 10 years other than Gallardo. Now there's 3 promising guys up from our system but they went a heck of a long time while only producing one upper level big league starter. Or even worse if you count Gallardo/Sheets as the only two in the anywhere remotely close past. Sidenote, I did see Ricky Bones as pitching or bullpen coach for someone in the post season. Can't recall who
  9. I view it as a win-win from both sides. Believe it or not, that can happen. I think the Greinke/KC trade was as well. I think the Houston trade will work out that way too. It was frustrating to see how much better Estrada and Gallardo did with new coaching though.
  10. And I actually enjoy their team. It was easy to hate the last good team with people like Zambrano, Dusty, Theriot. Nothing to dislike with these guys so far, bunch of young kids playing hard and having fun. And their star pitcher was a nobody late blooming prospect. Our dislike is really about what it will do the fans, they were unbearable 10 years ago when they were good. Can't imagine what they'll be like if they win it all (they'll be bad anyway just off the run they've had so far). It such a good story though, especially with the BTF thing with it. Also, that city will be torn apart if they win. Maybe Wrigley will burn down and they can actually build a good stadium down there then
  11. Watching the Dodgers game last night I realized how mediocre their lineup is since Puig has flamed out. That massive of a payroll and the lineup is just meh right now. If Puig was the superstar he looked like he could have been that would change things a lot. We all know aces are huge in the playoffs and can point to countless examples of it working. But very hard to believe in 3 years of Kershaw/Greinke they haven't gotten anywhere. I think they should double down and pay Greinke and try it again, it will click one of the years.
  12. Ended up not mattering as much I suppose since Dodger lost. But Arrieta pitching Saturday would be normal rest for him.
  13. What a crazy inning yesterday, I don't remember anything like it. I like reading peoples comments today against the bat flip and general excitement/celebration. Things like, well if you enjoy it the you must like beanballs and brawls because that's what it will lead to. It's like they don't get that is exactly the problem, the mode needs to be broken so that people can show some emotion and it doesn't lead to a beanball or a fight. This old way of thinking needs to go. In all other sports you're allowed to celebrate within reason and it doesn't lead to a fight. Of course Batista's thing last night in a random regular season HR would be over the top but in that situation I think anything goes other than turning and screaming in the catchers face or pointing at the pitcher and barking at him.
  14. Cubs just announced the NLCS rotation. Starting Lester game 1 and Arrieta game 2. Which would then make Lester game 5 and Arrieta game 6. I'm not sure about this. If Arrieta is game 1 and 5 he could be available for 7 if needed, and if not will be ready for game 1 of WS. As far as the matchups, all Mets pitchers are pretty much created equal so that doesn't matter. If they face LAD, which is most likely, they will have Kershaw game 2 and Greinke game 3 but one of the also rans in game 1. Why not roll Arrieta game 1 at LAD and take your for sure win on the road that you need. Heck, if you win game 1 you might even consider saving Lester for game 3 at home instead of going against Kershaw. I suppose his logic would be that Lester can beat the nobody game 1 and Arrieta has a much better shot vs Kershaw than anyone else. I think I'd rather just take my guaranteed game 1 win and have Arrieta back sooner.
  15. NBA is the same for the playoffs. Only weekend games are on ABC and still not all weekend games. Of course until the Finals when all are on ABC.
  16. If anything I think it would go the other direction, in the players favor. They're already controlled for longer than any other sport with no ways out. Compounded with how drastically underpaid they are in the pre-arby years and if anything the shift will be to limit team control. Not let them to be controlled until their 33+ making it difficult to get a big contract
  17. For all the reasons listed I don't any reason for expansion right now. combine it with what seems like a general decline in interest from young people (bad sign for the future) and the shift of TV in the works and I don't see why they should overextend themselves. This is basically why I previously said NBA is the only one it would make sense (and still would be considered a stretch). They are the only sport drastically trending UP right now. It's also much more popular among youth and is basically made for the internet era. It's now the 2nd most popular sport in the world. With the NFL primed for a decline at some point in the next 10 years (health issues, QB play, general overextending itself, every piece of info we learn seems to prove the NFL is just evil) they should be there ready to pounce.
  18. I never really heard of this as a possibility for this thread and really don't think it has much of a chance in the near future. But it's the offseason and a fun thing to discuss. I really don't think MLB should be expanding. I think they have a good setup right now with 30 teams and they should just play it cool and see how the landscape changes as people go away from cable TV and how that affects revenue. I think of the NBA, NFL and MLB the only league that should expand right now is NBA.
  19. I may have phrased wrong I guess, the reason the concept of divisions had originally come to be in all sports is the travel. This has created the fan interest that you speak off due to long standing rivalries.
  20. In a situation with 8 team divisions though, the top 4 in a division could make the playoffs in certain years. This isn't like it used to be with only two teams making the playoffs on each side, like you were referencing. The primary function of the divisions is to keep it somewhat regional to keep travel in check. If you play a completely balanced schedule the travel would even more grueling.
  21. I won't touch how wrong you are with that statement but I'm curious what part of St. Louis you live in? I was just about to say the same thing Jericho. He is exactly the type of guy I would want on my team. Hate to break it to you, but Mike Trout jogs to first on popups and routine fly balls too.
  22. Well put, that's pretty much my take at this point. I started out hating the idea of it coming down to 1 game but have come around and much prefer it to the previous system.
  23. Yes they currently wait two days in case of tie-breaker needs. That would still need to be in place. Now add in 2 more games and at least one travel day and those top seeds are sitting until Monday/Tuesday or even Wednesday instead of Friday. There is already complaining that sitting this long is too much, now we're going to double it. That's what I'm saying I think they're very reluctant to do (obviously, or they would have done it initially). That being said, they might just say: whatever, we're doing it because it generates so much more money and tell the top seeds to deal with it in exchange for the increased revenue. Or to really maximize the revenue go all the way to 8 teams but try to reduce travel days somehow to speed up the post season a bit.
  24. If you went to 4 team divisions you'd need wildcards and I don't see them wanting to go with a 16 team playoff as that would require shortening the regular season. So you're left with going to 6 and then having the top two teams sitting for a week, which no one wants either. There's already complaining this year about the setup due to the divisions being emphasized too much, going to 4 team divisions would only increase that problem. Have two division winners, 3 wild cards each league. Bottom two wild cards have to do the 1 game thing like now (or find a way to make it a 3 gamer).
  25. I think I'd rather go with 4 8-team divisions so that you can have wild cards if the best teams are in the same division. I think Portland should be choice #1, they support the Blazers so well they should probably be given another and see how it goes. Would probably pick Austin as the second unless Montreal has things worked out. Charlotte in consideration too. Please just add the DH to the NL already, this makes no senses to have different rules.
