  1. Obviously Casey. I think Lind should move this offseason rather than risk injury at all with him next season, thus killing his value. We're almost all the way through this season with him healthy and generally still hitting well and will finish with solid numbers. Offseason is the time and it allows for Braun to start working at 1B in the offseason (assuming Davis isn't traded too).
  2. You can blame him for a lot of things that season. The playoffs are not among them. In the Cardinals series he didn't allow five runs to score. He did help score five runs. He didn't allow 8 hits to get through. He did get 8 hits. He didn't allow 13 total bases by his bad defense. He did hit for 13 total bases. All in all I get he wasn't a great defender. I also agree he was horrible for us overall. Except the playoffs. In that single series I think it is pretty safe to say his offense more than offset his defense. If you disagree fine, we'll leave it at that. Don't want to hijack the thread any further. If we win one more game heads-up vs STL in the regular season they don't make the playoffs and we probably cruise to the WS. That was my one big regret from building that team, would've preferred just a good fielding weak hitter at SS. That team had plenty of power. I'm sure whatever slick fielder they grabbed could've matched Yuni's obp, just without the power.
  3. Moving Braun to first kills the value for Lind because it makes it obvious the Brewers want to move Lind. The value they'd get in return would potentially be less. But if the Brewers move Braun to third, their leverage increases. In any case, who are the viable options at third for the next three to four years? Hernan Perez? Jean Segura? Nathan Orf? I'd rather have Braun's bat there, especially if the Brewers can find out which of Santana, Reed, Phillips, Peterson, and Roache can stick. If 2016 is a lost season, how are the Brewers hurt by putting Braun at third and finding out what the young outfielders can do? It makes a ton of sense to me. So we have him move to 3rd for a few months just to move him to first later then? I'd rather have Braun's bat at catcher, unfortunately he's not a catcher. But it's a lost year, throw him back there. Any of the mediocre IFs we have in Segura, Sardinas, Perez, etc can play 3B until someone else arrives. Ideally what you want back for Lind, Lucroy, Krod, Davis is 3B and C along with pitching (like always). Who are viable options? well the guys I listed and not Braun. It 100% will not happen and is pointless to talk about or even think about.
  4. You can do the same thing by putting him at first where he shouldn't be near the butcher he was at third. 3rd is simply not an option and shouldn't be talked about. He couldn't play it when he was 23 and now after not doing it in 9 years how bad would he be? An offseason of practice at 1B and spring training they should know whether he can be average at 1B, I see no reason he can't be at least as good as Prince was.
  5. I'm fine with shutting him down now and just telling him to worry about coming in 100% for next year. With the plan being to give him his spot in the rotation and hope he does well so you can trade him. Not winning it all next year anyway so let him take on some innings from the young guys and hope you can re-coup his value.
  6. That opposite field HR yesterday was impressive. Tough pitch and didn't get a great swing on it and it still went out. So far so good with him.
  7. Thanks guys. I go on baseball reference a descent amount but didn't pick up on that yet
  8. Doesn't improve it as much as I thought. Being it was so drastically bad I thought it would bump it up a lot more. Curious, where were you able to look that up or be able to pick a date etc.? I haven't been able to find a spot to do things like that yet.
  9. If I recall from June 1 until they traded guys they had the 3rd best record in baseball, of course numbers 1 and 2 were the Cardinals and Pirates. Basically every game not started by Lohse they had a good shot to win. Then they traded and lost a lot while they re-tooled and have been winning since. Another silver lining here is things like this are a good sign about Counsell going forward as well.
  10. Yea I'm in the camp that enjoys how well they've been playing. Really since June until now they've been fine. Take out the week or two around the deadline when they lost a lot and they've been very good. Yes, I would prefer if they'd have lost 5 or 6 more of the close games but it's a good thing that these young guys are doing well. And that guys like Krod, Lind, Lucroy are playing well in order to trade them for as much as possible. I like what I see in Davies so far
  11. I thought the same thing yesterday during the game. Outside shot at getting to .300 as well. I'd be curious to see his post April splits and numbers, been close to his old self since. See post ASB break is 306/382/541
  12. Yea for some reason I saw Gonzalez's stats after my post in this thread, didn't realize how hot he'd gotten. I agree he'll get the third. Braun looks like 4th place as he keeps hitting.
  13. Contending and making the playoffs is only a part of it. But if we look back and we still don't think we will compete where are we recouping that value? If we spend $30mil+ extra for the same result in the end there is no way you trade half a year of Greinke to recoup $30mil+ in value plus what we had to pass up on in 2012(which ended up not being much). Then 29 teams every should not have signed anyone because they didn't win it all. And by having Greinke yes it does drastically increase the chances to make the playoffs and to actually win once you're there. I'm sure they tossed out some fair extensions at him and he told them he's going to FA and he got 50 mil more than we offered, we had no shot, had to trade.
  14. Exactly, he wasn't signing before hitting free agency, at which point we have no shot. Had to trade him.
  15. If I remember correctly we tried to trade TX Greinke straight up for Olt and the turned it down. Does anyone else remember this?
  16. By that line of thinking then no player should be signed unless you're a WS contender. Which becomes an endless cycle: you'll never have a contender if you never sign and you'll never sign because you're not a contender. Why have a team then. With Brew posted I would agree that in hindsight yes they should have if they got the exact same contract. However, at the time it was the right move because he wouldn't have signed before hitting FA and pitchers are such a risk injury wise that I don't think you'll ever see the Brewers hand out one of those monster deals like he got. Turns out he's been healthy the whole time, who knows if he had stayed maybe he gets hurt. I think they had to do it and it was the right move. Just too bad we haven't gotten anything from those pitchers yet.
  17. Yea if Stanton comes back soon and hits well to finish he would probably snag one. If he misses another 10-14 days I don't see how you can give him one when he missed so many games. McCutchen is a lock in my opinion. The remaining guys mentioned are a toss up with Braun as of now.
  18. Specific to being a utility guy, once his cost starts going up in arbitration I don't think it makes sense. You can have a guy like Sardinas do it for much cheaper. Of course the payroll will be very low already so if they're ok with paying it couldn't hurt to have him around as kind of insurance at all 3 IF positions. But you're probably better off at least getting something back for him and using someone like Sardinas. Segura likely won't get much back by himself but packaging him with Lind or Lucroy could help the return.
  19. I wonder if it's because the season is so long with so few off days that everyone is just cranky and wound too tight.
  20. If the one you mentioned is the one I'm thinking of it was essentially a game winner to put us in the playoffs on the last day of the season. He turned to the bench with his bat and did some antics with it. I mean, cmon it's a HR to put you in the playoffs for the first time ever. He had one really early in his career at STL that I think was midseason top of the 9th game winner that he overly celebrated too, probably got him on the STL badside too. But like I said before, game winners and playoff relevant shots should be allowed an exception by anyone.
  21. well put dlk, totally agree. I'm rooting for the guy, was really happy he pulled that off. Hope he keeps doing well and manages to get himself one good contract to cover himself and his family for life. I'll be rooting for Gomez his whole career too.
  22. Of course, but it's basic mathematics/odds that it is more likely when they're older and past their prime rather than before. Of course he could hang on for years and of course things like Dontrelle Willis happen. But the odds are in the other direction and that's the way to play it.
  23. Nothing wrong with what Crew said, perfectly reasonable but I would just rather let people enjoy themselves, celebrate when they succeed at something they've worked very hard at than to give them grief for it. And on the flip side when you mess up, like Gomez did here you should be competitive enough to be pissed at yourself. No one gives guys like Brady or Manning when they're fuming after an INT. But for Braun I don't know what he did other than peak at a HR now and then, which nearly every single player does if you watch closely. Or even if you just watch SC highlights, this actually struck me just the other night when the Mets hit 8 HRs, they stood at the plate for every one. The only times Braun did anything beyond would be for walkoffs, especially the two playoff clinching bombs he had where he turned to our bench to celebrate. Beyond that I don't know what he did. Come to think of it, I remember the Cardinals taking issue with him putting his head down and not watching as they thought that was too cocky, after they drilled him and made an issue he'd make a point to immediately put his head after hitting a no doubter and start jogging without looking up. Of course he was doing it to make a point, but they took issue with that too. Can't win with those guys. Beast Mode thing was mostly a Fielder thing initially ripped on by the old school, but now it's kind of stuck around as a phrase all over sports.
  24. Yea I was just getting at that there has really been no reports or knowledge of Braun being any kind of problem in the clubhouse. If anything watching the games it seems the opposite. Pre-scandal it seemed he got along with everyone as evidenced by most every teammate coming out in support of him through it all. Then after the scandal there has been nothing negative known. Yet he's labeled a bad attitude guy here. You're right bill hall, that was a shrewd trade by them to dump a rapidly declining expensive player for a young player like Grandal that they'll have for many years on the cheap. I don't know what else was all included in that specific deal but at least this part was solid. Unless of course Grandal is automatically a bad guy because he took a little testosterone. Too bad LAD has him though or a Braun/Luc package would be a great fit for them. Hopefully we can find a future 3B and future C from the upcoming Lind/Lucroy/Davis trades, not saying you have to target those spots but they're the two most clear spots in the minors right now for us, would be nice if those trades brought back some AA level guys at those positions who might get up to AAA next year and to the bigs in 2017, then of course more pitching. And as of now it wouldn't make sense to get anymore OFs until you see what all these guys do.
  25. I don't know how you can say that, as if it's nothing. There is no value in having anyone 30+ years old on the roster right now. And yes, we'll see how the young arms do before we know for sure how good this trade was. By the same token, we'll see how good Fiers is next year and the year after as well. I agree. The fact that he's 30+ makes it more likely that he'll regress sooner than if he was 26. It's that simple
