  1. At 7/$24.5mil we would have had a chance it seems.
  2. Someone can definitely be upset with it. They are pegging a spot in the rotation for him. A rotation that has Woodruff and Lauer, the later of the two has been a 4.50 ERA starter in his career. The other three (and the reserves) are all highly questionable with rough pasts starting. The risk here is he sucks as a starter and we are screwed until July when we can fix it...a huge negative on the 2020 team if it happened. I look at the current rotation and it is getting built very similar to the 2019 that wasn’t that good. One or two of the unknowns may impress and exceed expectations, but overall the odds are not great. We will see how it goes, but a lot of unproven talent didn’t work last year. THAT BEING SAID, personally I’m not upset with this move. I would really like to see another solid option with more of a track record though. Then we would at least have Woodruff/Lauer/(insert FA) that provide something stability. Still not great, but at least not asking for trouble like it currently stands.
  3. Okay, now let’s go get a reliable starter to fill out the rotation.
  4. Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread but I'm fairly certain I saw either a tweet or report that he can opt out after year 5. So if he's elite for 5 years he's definitely going to opt out and make even more money. The only way that happens is if he wins 2-3 more Cy Youngs over the next 5 seasons...and even then I'd be surprised to see a mid 30's starter decide to opt out looking for greener pastures. 95% probability he's riding this contract all 9 years all the way to the bank. I think there's a much more likely scenario that injury or simply age limits him from being the best starter on the planet, and five offseasons from now brewerfan.net is having multiple threads wondering how much $ the Yankees would need to throw in to get the Brewers to trade for him in the hopes he regains his 2018-2021 form. Yah, probably unlikely he is going to try and beat 4/$144mil. Never known where salaries will be at in 5 years though. I have a sense they might plateau for awhile (or not grow at such huge rates). A lot of the new money is due to all the local TV and national ones. Those won't be changing for awhile.
  5. Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread but I'm fairly certain I saw either a tweet or report that he can opt out after year 5. So if he's elite for 5 years he's definitely going to opt out and make even more money. In which case it would definitely be great for the Yankees.
  6. I will jump on the Cron boat. Dude has mashed lefties the last two years. Paired with Thames, yah, makes quite a bit of sense. Probably a .900 OPS production duo at 1B. Defense? Shhhhhh
  7. This contract may not end terrible. Take him through, what? 38? What if he stays elite for 4-5 years, still pretty good for another 2, and then tails off? Probably not that bad, especially by the time the inflation in baseball catches up a near decade later. Zack Greinke is going on 36 still elite and Verlander is going on 37 fresh off a Cy Young. Scherzer is going on 35 still elite. Who knows where this deal ends up, but it may not be a bad deal at all. There are a number of elite pitchers who keep it together to 34-35 or even beyond. Of course he may tail off 3 years from now.
  8. $27mil a year to have Price and Chavez? If Price reverts to his 2018 self this may be decent, but if he doesn't I am not confident that would look too pretty. Chavez wasn't good last year and was a decent prospect. I imagine you plan for him to be at 3B and his track record there doesn't look very pretty. Thad Ward? Okay I guess...but that isn't a huge needle mover to me. Better off going out and signing a 3B and a starter.
  9. Pretty sure he is #1 on the 1B depth chart these days too. We will see what Woodruff turns into. I guess the question is whether he is good or is he potentially elite. I have always been a huge Woodruff fan so hopefully he takes an additional step next year.
  10. No one is saying "just" go out and draft your own ace. Everyone knows that is easier said than done. We simply can't buy an ace, so we are left with 2 ways to get one. Trade for one, or develop your own. Neither is an easy solution, so teams like the Brewers are left to figure out other ways to try and win. It is a sad state of affairs. Sure, just saying even if we do good chances they are already into arbitration, getting expensive, and there will be 50 transaction threads wondering when to trade him.
  11. Pretty sure the fact he didn't play a solid two games worth of time because the opponent was getting slammed is a bigger reason he won't get there.
  12. I figured he sucked enough last year you could just make him a long man in the bullpen and wait for injury/ineffectiveness by someone else. Wouldn't take much more than a month to make 27 starts an impossible feat. Heck, if he is the 5th guy he will miss starts right off the bat with all the early off days. The problem is there is almost zero chance he pitches good enough you will want to give a 38 year old pitcher $17mil...it just is not going to happen. Logically he may just take a million or two so there is no drama surrounding it and he can pitch without the games. It only took $500k to have K-Rod rework his insane $17.5mil option in 2011 when we got him. If you know no team is going to let you pitch in 27 games why not take a little extra cash? No team is letting that vest, not a single one, no matter where he ends up.
  13. "Oh, just draft your own ace" To bad it takes pitchers years to finally click and half their control is gone before they are elite. Scherzer - 5th full year Greinke - 5th full year Verlander - 4th full year (he was good before then, but not truly elite) Strasburg - #1 pick so unless you all want to tank... DeGrom/Syndergaard/Kershaw - Elite from the start Corbin - 6th year Jimmy Nelson was about to take 4+ years to be that. I am not saying some don't show up right away, but way too many take half their team control or more to be elite and of course a ton of them like to get TJS and miss entire years of control on the DL. It puts small markets at a huge disadvantage. Some big markets trot out 3 aces on a roster and it takes a miracle and some great timing for a smaller market to have two at once.
  14. Guessing there is a really good chance they dump Happ to someone now that they have signed Cole. If they don't they are likely to pay the max luxury tax penalty for going $40mil over. So Happ would cost the Yankees a lot more than $17mil to be on the team and it would also hurt their draft pick placement.
  15. This is what happens when you hit free agency and the deal starts in your 20s. Great deal if he ages old Mad Max...if he ages like Price, Yikes.
  16. The earth shattering news we have been waiting for.
  17. Can’t say I am real sad we didn’t drop $14mil on a guy who wasn’t good last year and would cause him or Urias to be the 3B...that could be a disaster.
  18. Nah, I get the point. I am just really not much of a fan of such a move when we are in the midst of competing. Unless we are getting a future All Star type player I am just not really a fan. I don't care to grab solid, but not great prospects when it is a huge negative on the current team. The odds those players are worth it someday so much so it was worth wasting a ton of money while competing is unlikely. Of course if we don't waste $17mil or double that on Happ, what are we doing with it? Is it going to be put to use on the team or not. That obviously makes a difference. There are so many moving parts to an idea like this it is hard to judge without a real proposal. Maybe they are taking on the salary and then flipping the prospects...I mean who knows.
  19. The Angels might be looking at Braun for 3B in 2021 Unlikely, heard they were looking to acquire Hiura to man 3B for the next 6 years.
  20. They could say being removed in a way that violates this rule is an auto DL stint or something like that. And you prove that, how? That is the problem, you can't.
  21. Think I will just let some guy within the organization pitch and use $17mil for something useful. That is a ton of cash. Obviously really hard to give an opinion on this idea without knowing what they would give along with him.
  22. What happens if you just dump someone with a vesting option? Is there a penalty or is the players union just going to frown upon it and make a big stink? JA Happ is extremely old, was terrible last year, and has an easily attainable vesting option. It is probably just safe to assume he would get it to vest and he would cost a total of $34mil. We are trying to compete and I really don't see us playing around with dead money for a decent prospect or two. EDIT: On second thought if he gets a Chase Anderson type treatment he may avoid it. He needs to average about 5.5 innings over 30 starts to vest. Regardless something to take into consideration if he is healthy all year.
  23. I think the low seeds could pull off the upset more than people think. An unfamiliar team from a different conference may be harder to beat than one would think. That being said I don't think they want upsets. They really seem set on crowning the best team. Not having a #8 beating the #1 so they can get slaughtered in the semis or whatever.
