  1. Exactly. The comments have been, "they have lots of money and can spend to be competitive." That's only somewhat true. That means not only do superstar players have to become available, the Cubs have to win the extremely high bidding or take on a risk by absorbing a contract in trade. So in 2 years, who are the Cubs going to sign to improve their 75 win team on paper to a 90+ win team? They can either go all-in again on Rizzo, Bryant, etc. or the main crop of guys available is like Kenley Jansen and Kluber in their mid/late 30s. And for 2020 and 2021, they have a little bit of room to spend but they have a lot of holes and, once again, no farm system. I'm actually predicting a fairly drastic offseason for them where somebody like Rizzo or Baez or Bryant are dealt. If not, they are inevitably going to collapse. So are the Brewers in 2022 but they are slightly better than the current Cubs and we know this is coming as a small market team anyways. It will be interesting to see what they do if they once again miss the postseason. Bryant/Baez/Rizzo are all a year from FA after next year. They will either rebuild at that exact moment or I think their team will slowly dwindle into another massive rebuild. The pitching is ancient with little to no reinforcements coming any time soon and the offensive side isn't crazy young either. Contreras/Happ are good, but what else?
  2. I hope they extend Rizzo. A 1B who doesn't hit for 30 homers under 30 sounds like a bad plan to have for their mid 30s.
  3. Doesn't Darvish have four years left? Thought he signed a six-year contract. Their roster after 2021 is: Jason Heyward (32 years old, 2 years left) Yu Darvish (35 years old, 2 years left) Kyle Hendricks (32 years old, 2 years left) Willson Contreras (30 years old, 1 year left) David Bote (who cares)
  4. The Chiefs are lucky Mahomes is even returning this year and has such a short timetable. There is no way they dare risk playing him in a tough game they could lose even if they do have him. May suck pretty much assuring a loss with Moore, but they will survive. I can't imagine how terrible it would be and the absolute backlash if he played and got hurt.
  5. I’m not really concerned. This is either meaningless or makes them worse. I don’t think Maddon is a bad manager, not like he lost the clubhouse or something. Yeah, his bullpen management is very questionable...but their problems are way bigger than a manager. They can spend a bunch of money for a few years, but hopefully for them they decide to rebuild while they still have some stars to give out. They may still have a few competitive years left, but it requires payroll and eventually age of their stars and the FA additions will catch up.
  6. Mogi had an OPS south of .700 last year and it wasn’t very impressive this year. Pretty confident he would be a total flop. Aoki was a mid .900 OPS guy in Japan and comfortably under .800 stateside. Aoki also has video game slugging in Japan, poor here. This guy is a poor slugger in Japan...can’t imagine here. I’d rather start Hernan Perez at SS.
  7. So what you saying is we are likely to get less than 8 WAR for the next 3 years with Grandal? That doesn't sound like it is worth $17mil. Are we calling year four a 1 WAR season, so 7 WAR for three years? 2.33 WAR a season? That isn't terrible I suppose...but it also depends on what WAR valuation you like. 2.33 WAR via BRef seems pretty unlikely, but Fangraphs loves him. I guess I don't follow why you found the average for 31-34 and then your contract is for 31-33. Why wouldn't you calculate 31-33 age seasons for an average?
  8. There is 100% without a doubt no way the Brewers put 3 catchers on the roster. That is before even considering Grandal is not apart of this team. I don't think it makes any sense to be honest. Not even remotely. Why would we carry a terrible bat on the bench in the odd case all our catchers get knocked out of the game? Anyone want to tell me the last time a 3rd catcher was used in a game outside of September for the Brewers? How about for any team? Is that worth the daily negative value they bring scuffing up the bench with their cleats? The seeds and Gatorade they consume during a game would likely have more value than they ever do in a game over who could be on the roster instead. No, that isn't in blue, it is probably ture.
  9. LB ??? I fully agree that next year's team could be better all things considered. We will essentially lose 4 or 5 impact players, which is a really small hit. I even made a post earlier in the thread about the lack of seniors this year. However, Orr and Baun are going to be tough to replace and presumably get better. Those are two really good football players and make up half of the LB core. I mentioned before the season, but I mentioned how much the LB performance declined from 2017 to 2018. Going off of sacks it was 42 in 2017 down to 19 in 2018 (yikes). That number from 2018 got even scarier when you consider only 6 or so of those were from players going to be on the 2019. That was probably my main concern going into this year and they already have 27 this year. I am confident the younger guys can pick up some slack again, if not I think we are in big trouble. Orr and Baun will be hard to replace. They probably won't get that kind of elite-like pass rush from a few guys, but overall I think they can be a bit more balanced on defense. Hopefully the DBs step up enough to offset the lighter pass rush. I think the DL will be better next year too.
  10. I don’t think anyone is saying Illinois didn’t play a great game, but it still is no game they had business losing. The last two Big 10 teams literally ran over Illinois running the ball. Then we come in and Jonathan Taylor struggles to 4.6 yards a carry...the worst average by any starter has had against Illinois in Big 10 play. I mean....that doesn’t look good. Every other Big 10 team has lit up the Illinois defense, we nearly score 23 points. Eastern Michigan scored more against Illinois and UConn scored the same amount as us. I think when your offense pretty much depends on the RB you run into problems. Taylor has been human three games, Northwestern, Michigan State, and Illinois. Michigan State the other runners ended up making it still a ground game slaughtering, but the other two the running game wasn’t very good. In those two games the run game has struggled the ball was put into the hands of Jack Coan and the Northwestern game he wasn’t very good. The Illinois game he was pretty competent until that INT. I went back and checked just to make sure, but in my opinion that INT was a real bad throw/decision. It’s interesting both his INTs come in games where the run game didn’t do well. Not saying Coan isn’t the guy, but it seems he isn’t going to help us win games. You are basically just hoping he doesn’t turn the ball over. I get that is an improvement over Horni, but not sure that is saying much. Again, I have been pleased with Coan, but something I would like to see him do down the stretch is make a big impact on a game when the run game just isn’t working.
  11. Hard to really find a true upset...like really surprising win. They are just too consistent and rarely a bottom feeder. It also doesn’t help in recent years Ohio State/Penn State own them. There goes 99% of your chance at an upset. Then before those teams became powerhouses of today (more than they were before) Michigan handily dominated us. Any time we beat those teams in the 90s or early 2000s they were usually not highly ranked and/or having a down year. Just very rarely have we beat one of them and not been really really good ourselves. 2010 Ohio State win is probably up there. #1 team mid season (so no fluky 2016 LSU ranking) and we were #18 going into the game. Even at home that’s impressive and we ended up their lone loss over the entire course of the season. Of course we ended up ranking just two spots behind them at the end of the year. Probably more of a compliment than an insult that I can’t think/find any big upset wins we had. Not exactly something you want to be doing because that means you are notably worse than your opponents. If they win Saturday I think I would tab it higher than the previous win vs. Ohio State, simply because we are coming off such a horrendous loss to Illinois. There is little optimism after that.
  12. I think this is proof that WAR is indeed NOT the best stat. I would have been way more interested in an average WAR per season (per 30 starts as an example) versus overall career WAR as a Brewer. That pretty much hands it to guys that spent a lot of time here (Wegman). I think people underrate Bosio a bit. He had some stellar seasons. We suck at getting young pitching and we rarely keep guys long. Career WAR is not a great stat to use.
  13. Our window may be 3 years, but signing Grandal doesn’t mean 3 years of production. He could have anywhere from 0-3 years of elite performance left.
  14. Sans JT23? I was half joking (Rose Bowl is a CFP game next year, I believe), but I don’t see why next years team can’t be better than this years record wise. Since the Badgers make OSU/Penn State games essential auto losses not having them in the regular season is big. Next years Big 10 schedule is pretty easy at face value and the non conference schedule isn’t very daunting depending on how Notre Dame is. Going into next year I would be optimistic of a 2017-like season. BUT I don’t want to to assume this team is losing this weekend (and again after that)...yet. Nor do I want to go into a whole breakdown of next year when this team still has a lot to play for. BACK TO 2019 WE GO
  15. I am okay missing the Rose Bowl, I would prefer next year anyway.
  16. I think it is just readily assumed the Yankees would just outbid us or make us massively overpay. They have money and no clear replacement that I am aware of. Considering the dismal market I can't imagine they let Didi go for some acceptable amount we would be willing to pay. Gleyber came up at SS & played about half of 2019 there, so Yanks could always give him the spot if they don't want to pay Didi & they'd still have DJ/Urshela for 2B/3B with Andujar also due back at some point in 2020. I thought Torres was the 2B, but I see that was last year...and then split this year. With DJ in tow Didi is kind of an insurance luxury. Of course they are the Yankees so they would probably do something like that. I don't see the Yankees as the clear landing place for Didi as much as people were leading on awhile back. I still don't see him coming here, but does seem more plausible.
  17. How do you make any logo/brand not boring? It’s all subjective, but many feel the Miller M logo/jerseys are just plain bland, myself included. Trying to be “not boring” doesn’t mean a concept has to be groundbreaking, unique or dazzling, but some looks just end up feeling generic. The Astros and Blue Jays had bland, uninspired jerseys in the 2000’s. Then they rebranded with a heavy nod to past, classic uniforms - and they both knocked it out of the park. Sharp, classic, non-generic, easily recognizable as a brand, great jerseys. I hope the Brewers have paid close attention to those rebrands. This is key, in baseball it must be classic. Anything new that doesn't hint towards the past is essentially an automatic disaster. It should be as basic as possible too, that is probably where they went wrong with the current uniforms. The scripting on the front is very busy and mashed together and the sleeve patch has too much going on. The helmet/cap logo on the other hand is much simpler. I actually liked the new D Backs uniforms (minus the road grays, they look bad on TV) and thought Miami had great jerseys. They were colorful, but the font was good and Miami is colorful...so it is fitting. I didn't like the neon bright hats though.
  18. How does one make a baseball uniform not boring? I mean there is only so much one can do. The D Backs tried it and the baseball world nearly had a mental breakdown. They do it for special days (camo/4th of July ones I tend to like) and again...everyone starts crying. Marlins did it and got dubbed the worst uniforms in baseball. People are on edge of Nike taking over thinking they are going to make us look like the Oregon Ducks. People seem to support bland and sterile designs. Look up a ranking of MLB uniforms. It looks like a competition to see who can have the most basic and old design ever. Not saying those jerseys are bad, but any team that tries to go against a classic look gets roasted over a fire.
  19. Should it really be reflective of Belichick when his coaches leave to go coach dumpster fire franchises? I think there is a big difference in taking over the Patriots and going to coach the Redskins/Doplphins/etc. If, for instance, Brady retired and a coach got Garoppolo to be the QB I think that team could be pretty relevant. Is that team going to be consistently good for a decade? Prooooobably not. Of course they lost their next man up because Brady started defying age, but maybe Stidham is that guy. Who knows. I just don't see that team calling it a day when Brady retires, I think they are aiming for sustainability after that.
  20. What system? Belichick IS the system. He's the GM, he's the coach. He's the organization. Who has left that front office and done anything? Scott Pioli was the big guy. Isn't he back in New England now? And a good majority of those guys have been sitting under him for years. McDaniels has been sitting under him almost the entire time. It isn't crazy to think they can be a good organization after them. Especially when they could probably pay Belichick to be some coach potato advisor for them even after he retires. Belichick is brilliant and Brady is really good, but it takes a lot more than that to win every Super Bowl.
  21. I think it is just readily assumed the Yankees would just outbid us or make us massively overpay. They have money and no clear replacement that I am aware of. Considering the dismal market I can't imagine they let Didi go for some acceptable amount we would be willing to pay.
  22. San Antonio got the team and there were pretty good expectations of a new stadium to be done. With those plans getting more dismal by the day I would expect MLB to move the team if they won't build the stadium. A big part of MLBs wishes is to have better facilities.
  23. Nationals, easily. How can a Brewers fan not cheer for another team that has never won a title? I guess the Nationals are sorta a big market, but hey...a history of an empty trophy case is all too relatable.
  24. I think people a sadly mistaken if they think the Patriots window will close when Belichick/Brady retire. I think people underrate how good the system is, how good the team is outside of them, and how much of a system QB Brady really is. We will see, but I don't think they are destined for a rebuild when that happens. That greatly depends on who the QB is though.
  25. If that historical data was available, I think it's possible that there'd be worse out there. And there is so much more to the importance of a loss than the point spread set by Las Vegas, which is what others and I am saying. To borrow a phrase from Ron Wolf, this loss is a fart in the wind that will be remembered about as unremarkably as the loss to BYU a couple of years from now. No one claimed it did. No one said it was the worst upset ever and started printing T-Shirts. I think it is quite fair for people to think it is from an upset standpoint. So you are arguing something that doesn't relate to what your opinion of "worst loss" is. I also already said many times ago that there are definitely numerous losses that are more emotional gut punches so to speak. I also already said this loss will be really irrelevant in that sense after they lose 2+ more games. Like....I literally already said all of that. I am not sure why you are telling me.
