  1. At the time that was a good haul and all three had/have high ceilings. Pretty hard not to like what they did there. If it doesn't work out oh well, but I won't call it a bad choice.
  2. You don't think Ryan Braun AND Jonathan Lucroy could get Matz? With all due respect I think you're insane. Matz is good but you're talking about two legitimate all stars. Yeah obviously there are other factors like age and money but at some point we need to actually look at the players themselves. The Mets offense is putrid. 28th in runs scored. 29th in BA. 24th in OBP. 20th in OPS. Meanwhile even if you consider all those question marks you brought up they are 2nd in team ERA. They have more than enough pitching to win but their offense is holding them back big time. Adding two middle of the order bats would be huge for them. Nope not insane and I don't think they are particularly close in value. 5.5 years of a legit ace with multiple years at league minimum is unheard of. He is incredibly valuable...heck it might be hard to be worth any more than a guy like Matz is right now. If the Red Sox went and tried to get Matz it would take a ridiculous package. Moncada, Devers, and Espinoza would all likely be involved plus more secondary pieces. He is a top tier pitcher, controllable for a ridiculous amount of time, and dirt cheap. You think Braun/Lucroy have anywhere near that kind of value? Getting both Lucroy/Braun makes a lot of sense to help their offense...but they won't give up Matz for them.
  3. It seems like people are taking everything into account except for how good the players actually are right now. Right now Braun would be a HUGE offensive upgrade over Conforto. .229/.298/.741 vs .319/.378/.917. While Conforto will probably get better it's a matter of whether or not the Mets want to wait for that to happen. If they think they are legitimate WS contenders and want to go for it now Braun would be a huge help. Hell how about Braun AND Lucroy to NY for a return centered around Matz? Those two would significantly upgrade their offense this year and next and while Matz is very good the fact is he's probably their #4 right now, at best their #3, and can be replaced in the rotation by Wheeler if and when he gets back. There is no chance they trade a starter at this point...none. Harvey has been inconsistent, Wheeler is an unknown, Matz has had some injury concerns, Syndergaard has injury concerns, and even Colon has had some injury concerns. They can't afford to trade one at this point...probably wouldn't trade Matz anyway. Regardless no I don't think Lucroy and Braun(while eating money) could get Matz. Maybe a three team trade where Matz goes to the Red Sox or something. They could send Matz to the Sox and then give us a portion of what they get to us for Lucroy/Braun. Steven Matz is an ace controlled through 2021. Teams pull up a dump truck to have one for half a season. Teams pay them ridiculous amounts of money in FA. For 5.5 years on the cheap I don't know how many teams could even have the prospects to offer.
  4. I think it is pretty understood universally that when signing a player into their mid-30s or later you are likely going to have a few dud years at the end. Also why do you ignore his injury history? I know too long to list it all. That injury history along with his age sounds pretty scary. He could hit till he is 37...not doubting that. Though not sure it would be easy. He already has trouble consistently staying on the field and performing consistently. However I would rather not take that $80mil risk to find out if I get get a few pieces for the future.
  5. Medeiros/Gatewood/Harrison was a fantastic get. At that draft slot Medeiros wasn't even a bad pick. To get Gatewood/Harrison...stellar. Of course now that we can look in the past none of them have blossomed, but I still like all three a lot.
  6. Not worried about the Lucroy extension talk. I think it is mostly just a big lie. Only way he signs an extension is if the offers for trades are horrible, he sign below market value(by a good amount, and I think a trade of Braun to free up payroll would be likely. The last may not be a requirement though.
  7. I take it. From everything I see Zack Wheeler has quite a bit of value right now. Ryan Braun and his full contract not so much. Problem is the Brewers aren't trying to shed salary and prefer the prospects. I think the Brewers would prefer to take on salary and get more back. That being said I bet we could trade for Wheeler and never have him pitch a game for us. Just flipping him would probably net more than if we just traded Braun for prospects in a different deal(since we are assuming the Brewers pay nothing). The only risk is if we let him pitch for us to see if he can increase his value. If he pitched like his 2014 form for half a season he would be worth a lot more than Braun and his full contract is worth. Probably not any bigger of a risk than a bunch of prospects. Actually probably a safer bet.
  8. Two thoughts: Harvey is a no for a few reasons. He has been iffy this year and we could only only control him through 2018. Can we even be a .500 team in 2018? No thanks I am not taking that risk. Matt Garza is probably the best pitcher on this team. Has one bad season and everyone thinks he is washed up. I think you guys just hated him before anyway.
  9. They are not trading an elite starter for a year and two months of Lucroy. The value difference is massive and Lucroy's impact would be greatly reduced since they are losing Matz. Trading Harvey or Wheeler for prospects to get their offense or to get prospects to trade for offense is much more realistic. Trading Matz for Lucroy...forget about it. It would make more sense to trade Matz for prospects and then trade less than half of that haul to get Lucroy.
  10. Has needed a break for a long time. Brutal after his honeymoon phase in the bigs ended.
  11. Isn't that kind of the point though? Taking a risk and buying low on a guy if you believe in him and think he's capable of more. Different situation and position, but that's exactly what we did with Gomez. If he puts together a breakout season he obviously becomes much more expensive at that point. He looks like a #3 starter and we control him through his age 32 season. Why exactly do we need to extend him? If we try to lock up FA years we are committing good money to a pitcher well past 30 years old way before that time actually comes. I don't think an extension would provide a ton of upside for the Brewers, but they could do it. I say it probably would not have much upside because the odds Nelson is better than a #3 are slim(IMHO) and I doubt he would sign an extension for pennies. 5/$25mil? He really hasn't done anything to warrant much money. Even that may be too much.
  12. I like Jimmy Nelson and all and think he could be a solid pitcher, but his stats his entire career are very mediocre. At this point I don't think it is worth it to offer an extension. Until he can put together a season worthy enough of an extension no thanks.
  13. This team could really decline fast if they trade enough pieces. Lucroy, Carter, and Hill all being traded would be a big hit to the offense. If they trade Braun along with them...yikes. All of those players don't have very good replacements waiting in the wings. Take them away from this already poor offense, paired with this awful pitching, and you can see how we could be pretty bad. Though I don't know how much of a difference it can make in just two months of games.
  14. Yah I will take the cold over the heat any day. I can always add layers, but there is only so much I can take off before the neighbors start calling the cops.
  15. It's all about what Houston believes. You can't look at a prior trade and let that dictate how you will approach the next. Gomez fell off a cliff. I doubt Melvin really predicted that was going to happen. You can't say, "Well Lucroy is coming from Milwaukee too so I bet he falls off a cliff like Gomez." Stearns doesn't know anything about that system that the Astros don't already know themselves.
  16. How? It's not prohibited by the contract as far as I know, and in any event the team could just make up some excuse (kind of like Houston did a couple years ago). Corey Ray is an elite talent though, I don't see any reason to think anyone we picked at #6 next year would be better. Yes but you would need a legitimate excuse. Which with player physicals these days isn't the hardest, but you can't come up with it out of thin air. Also regretting your selection or intentionally drafting a guy to end up not signing them is probably way more unethical than any team wants to get. You could cost a person millions etc for your teams own personal gain. I'm guessing such a move would end up similar to the Astros situation a few years ago. Where they only would sign the one player if Aiken took the underslot deal. When he didn't they ripped up the agreement with the other player. I know that player filed a grievance, but I can't recall the outcome. Though I think the issue there was the fact he used an agent and that threatened his ability to go back to school. Regardless a grievance would definitely happen if we opted not to sign Ray.
  17. And even if we could we can't just not sign Corey Ray. The Players Union would destroy us and likely lose more picks in the future.
  18. I'd take a stab at him...with very low expectations. His defense is pretty bad and he has never really hit that well. Hey you never know though.
  19. I see little upside in bringing Arcia into the organization. He has pretty bad defense last I checked and has never shown very good offense.
  20. Steven Matz is more of an untouchable than a Giolito or Urias via trade. He has already shown dominant success at the MLB level. Zero chance the Mets trade him. You could add Arcia and Phillips along with Lucroy and the Mets would still hang up laughing. Great, Cool with me, when the Winter Meetings happen and I say, remember that time I offered you Lucroy for Matz+Plawecki....LOL! Boy, sure glad we got to enjoy the playoffs in front of a tv. How many more years are you going be bottom half in MLB scoring? You're up to 5 now how's that working for ya? Probably a lot better than trading a bonified ace for a 1.5 year rental catcher.
  21. I guess Zach Wheeler is chopped Liver? And I say that because we're supposed to take him in a trade? He's coming back after the AS break. Which is before the Trade deadline. See how that works? 6 SPs become 5? They are going to depend on a guy coming off a major injury and prior he pitched like a #3? I'm just not buying it. Even going from Matz to Wheeler is a steep downgrade. Unless of course you expect him to come back strong and pitch like the frontline starter people hope he is. Taking a major piece off the MLB roster just doesn't make sense for the Mets. If they were the Cubs and an easy lock to avoid the wild card game(heck even make the playoffs) maybe such a move would make sense. For a team on the edge of being a playoff team or not taking away from the MLB roster isn't a great option.
  22. The Mets may only need a three man rotation for the playoffs, but they need five starters to actually get to the playoffs and losing Matz is a giant downgrade for a team that isn't even leading their division as it is.
