  1. I am really confused why this guarantees Davis gone. These seem like pick ups for long shots at the opening day roster Maybe some spring training competition.
  2. I can't say I would be any more happy with Will Venable on this team and I know I wouldn't buy any more tickets. As for some of these guys being questionable it isn't like we are commuting anything. We can easily drop them for someone else and we can always drop them before the season. Pinto is probably competition for Maldonado.
  3. Wily Peralta to the pen would be really ill advised for two reasons: #1 He has just hit arbitration and will make a decent figure. Not sure it makes financial sense unless you really believe he will be dominant. Doesn't he struggle in the first inning or is that Nelson? #2 Why does everyone forget he is only a season removed from a solid rotation arm. He got injured this year give him a chance.
  4. Your assumption is wrong. Smiths best two pitches prior to coming to the Brewers were his power fastball and plus changup, he also had a curve to go with it, he just started to develop the slider before he came over. He has 4 pitches, 3 of which are plus or better. The only reason you only see the slider out of the pen is because it's become his best, and in short stints you use your best pitches. Here's an article on him on fangraphs from around the time of the trade, good read to put with what we have seen out of smith. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brewers-land-will-smith-and-his-possible-breakthrough/ If what you were saying was true he would already be an ace on our team. But since he continues to be in the bullpen it is quite obvious the Brewers do not view him as a good enough starter to outweigh his value in the bullpen. Will Smith does not have 3 plus pitches. He has one plus pitch in his slider that is it. The article talks about his NOT overpowering fastball and his not so great change up. That is exactly how I would describe both pitches in the present, though he never uses his curveball. The article states what I already said. Will Smith is a back end of the rotation pitcher and even that isn't a sure shot. He has so much more value in his current role. Right now Will Smith is a rare commodity, as a starter he would be one of many back end types.
  5. I highly disagree. The Houston Astros built themselves a contender and only have a $70mil payroll. What have they done that we can't? They have yet to spend like a big market. Now the Cubs we can't do what they did up to last year. I believe they started last year with a $120mil payroll and realistically we couldn't do that before all our big boys hit arbitration. We wouldn't be able to support the huge payroll increases the Cubs will see.
  6. I'm just saying who knows what kind of guy Ryan Braun is. Maybe he is the kind of guy that prefers to stay in Milwaukee unless compensated well or going to the west coast to be by home. That or maybe he really doesn't care were he plays as long as he is being paid and winning. I don't really think his comments matter though. Many players talk about how much they love a city and turn around and hate on it when they leave. Bottom line who knows how big of an issue the no trade clause is. Maybe it is meaningless or maybe it is a massive hurdle that would require millions to get past.
  7. Only way we get him is if we spend the #5 pick on him, which with a great year wouldn't be unreasonable. He is the top catcher and a safe pick to stay behind the plate. Would be shocked if he was passed up that many times to make it to our second pick.
  8. I wouldn't want Garcia in return for Braun. Carson Fulmer is my starting point in any trade for Braun with the White Sox. Should be a pretty quick phone call.
  9. Pass me some Will Smith kool aid. The guy doesn't even have a third pitch. Till that day not a chance he goes to the rotation. That slider won't be so foolish after your 2nd or 3rd plate appearance.
  10. Players will block trades for reasons outside of winning. Sometimes players demand money or other incentives. Braun could easily demand his option to be picked up and squash any possible trade. He may simply prefer playing in Milwaukee unless a trade to the west coast(most notably California) can happen. We won't really know what Braun values until said trade materializes. I wouldn't be shocked to see Braun veto a trade...I also wouldn't be shocked to see him jump on the first flight out of here and talk about how much he hates Milwaukee.
  11. Braun's offense is that incredibly better than that of Heyward. It is better, but not enough to totally disregard Heyward' defense and age. The way Braun is aging and all his injury past it really wouldn't be shocking to see his numbers more closely mirror Heywards moving forward. Obviously money is a factor. I think to really make Braun attractive the Brewers need to eat money. His contract isn't all that amazing and the injury concerns make any type of commitment scary.
  12. I would much much rather have Heyward due to defense and his age. It's not even close to be honest. I also don't have to baby Heyward all season to keep him on the field the majority of the time.
  13. No team tries to lose games. We are getting worse because we are trading players to improve our talent for the future. We aren't going to dump Lucroy or Davis just to lose more games. A horrible record is just an indirect benefit of improving for the future. I'd much rather see Santana/Nelson/Peralta/etc. take steps forward and win 75 games than watch everyone flame out and lose 100. We aren't going to trot a AAA roster out for a better draft pick and a #1 draft pick isn't a goal.
  14. Got all of 2011 except one player, ___________...whoops. I remember him being pretty decent too. EDIT: Edited out name so as to avoid spoiler issues....Mass Haas
  15. We get it man. You would rather the Brewers put together a 75 win roster for the rest of your life. If you don't support a rebuild you might as well not be on this board because that is what 99% of the conversations will be related to. Honestly might as well not be a fan if you don't support a rebuild and prefer 70-75 win teams. Gosh maybe we can have an astronomical season and win 80 games!!
  16. That would be an awful deal for the Brewers...awful. Lucroy is worth that package by himself, I have heard many think Smith has the value to bring back a Top 40 prospect, and Davis with his controllability is likely worth at least a Top 100 prospect.
  17. Carlos Correa has quite a bit more value and I would rather have him if the Brewers could have one. Mainly because Correa won't need to move to 3B any time soon if ever. Though Lindor and his glove/high AVG combo would be very attractive in itself. Of course that is assuming he can truly hit .310+ long term. If his average drops Correa is the obvious choice. 15 years from now I think Correa ends up being the best over his career.
  18. About 2/3 of his errors were throwing errors, but even then in his shortened season he still had 9 fielding errors. Going to 1B also doesn't disregard throwing the ball. Throws across the diamond exist, tricky throws to second exist, and being a cutoff man also exists. I'm not sure he would be below average or a total liability. We won't know that until he attempts to play there. Ryan Braun isn't the most athletic defender. He was garbage at 3rd, took him years to figure out LF decently, and after a move to RF he looked 100x worse than in LF.
  19. Darn it I missed that we signed Alvarez! What were the contract details? Also a career 107 OPS+ is not too shabby.
  20. I have seen multiple people refer to Braun as a $16mil player....he is a $20mil player. Some of it is deferred, but that doesn't change the fact they will owe him $105mil.
  21. Ryan Braun is an absolute garbage RFer. I know that by advanced stats, TV, and watching him in person. He is not good at all. If you think he is you need to watch more closely. The only good plays I have ever seen him make are after pathetic routes and horrible reaction times that any average defender would have made with ease. The amount of balls he misses that turn into doubles or singles is quite sad.
  22. Market might not be right for the trade maybe? Or he isn't worth what some of us feel he is? Could be a lot of factors. Well what we feel he is worth means nothing for the speed of a trade. I just don't feel Stearns will trade him for less because the market is low. Hopefully if that happens he just holds onto him.
  23. I am actually surprised Davis hasn't already been traded. Pretty clear Stearns doesn't like non versatile players. I'd expect him to be traded, but looks like Stearns is holding out for good value and won't sell low.
  24. Agreed In regards to Santana. I'm just speculating. Read lots of Houston articles prior to the trade that suggested that players like Chris Carter and other players like him were wearing out their welcome in Houston because of the low BA/high strikeouts approach. And Domingo Santana was one of those mentioned. My speculation is that he was a throw-in. Again, hope I'm wrong, reading too much into it. I probably am At any rate, Phillips was clearly the center-piece of the trade. Domingo Santana was the center piece of that trade before Mike Fiers was added.
