  1. Wish this would have been decided before they cut Baker who I think could have been useful but I think the odds that they end up with another free agent in the end is better than not so whatever. Wang had a nice run in AAA, but I still think he was going to struggle with the long ball against MLB hitters.
  2. Guys who have had success in the past in MLB (Hoover’s 2012 and 2013/Frieri’s 2010-2012) but have seen their performance decline vs. guys who have never been given an extended look because of either middling stuff or good not great numbers in the minors. I guess they had Joba and Ryan Webb last season so maybe it is nothing. While I don’t think he will make the team in spring, if he maintains the 30%+ K rate in AAA that he had last season I think he will find the MLB bullpen at some point. FWIW, Frieri was in Tampa Bay during Arnold’s last season there.
  3. Maybe its just all coincidence, but it seems like the Brewers have transitioned the NRI pitcher strategy from 4A players (Snow, Espino, Barbosa) to MLB flameouts (Hoover, Fieri)
  4. Starting a game down 12-0, 4 possessions in was an efficient way of ending that one early. The careless turnovers need to be cut back. Id rather have multiple shot clock violations than watch Happ blindly throw it out of the post multiple times. Its easy to blame the current struggles on the 3 power forwards who haven’t developed (AI might have been the brightest spot last night), but taking Dearing and Jordan Hill were also killers they just aren’t around to point a finger at. Neither were B1G level players and both had no other power 5 offers yet it was somehow the best we could do. Either Bo was distracted late in his career, or the staff felt emboldened to keep reaching deeper into the recruiting pool. Iverson’s lack of defensive development is stunning to me. I’ve come to expect a great athletes like Flowers and Evans to develop into strong defenders but for some reason it hasn’t happened here. Pritzl needs to make more 3s especially if we are going to be designing plays for him to shoot. Davison’s bum shoulder was finally exposed last night. Credit Purdue, they were a strong team. Amazing they haven’t had any kind of tournament run recently.
  5. Peculiar move. While it is easy to overanalyze a low risk move, there was at least some motivating factor. I guess we don’t offer much first base depth beyond the 2 on the MLB roster, and a launching pad in AAA. Though Id hope the organization looks to enhance the position flexibility of the current roster rather than looking to replacement level players outside the organization.
  6. According to Massey Ratings, none of these things are true.
  7. Will be interesting to see how many Wisconsin seniors get drafted and how many make rosters in the league. To be honest, I could see a case for any of them: Fumagali: May be a lock if he can get healthy, but it was a down senior year. Watched replay of the Cotton Bowl and was amazed by the performance but partially because I didn’t anything like that this year. Ramesh: I don’t know where the bar is currently for fullbacks, but certainly his bowl performance and end of the season run should get him a camp invite if nothing else. Ewing and Watt both got drafted so I assume he will. Tindal: Above average career, though seems more like the undrafted practice squad type given his size and the success of Badger DBs in the NFL. Jamerson: Rawness at the position and tackling lapses may keep him from a roster, but he probably has enough speed to intrigue teams. Jacobs: Seems likely to make a roster as a special teams player if nothing else. Dooley: Could see him playing inside at the next level. Wasn’t a strong enough pass rusher to me to see him playing outside on Sundays Sheehy: Was a versatile player for Wisconsin but I don’t know if he is big enough to play inside or quick enough to play end at the next level. James: Generated enough negative plays and pressure his senior year to be drafted. Probably a better fit in a 4-3. Obasih: Before the knee injury, I thought he was a mid-round pick but I think he still gets a late round flyer if he tests well and is healthy, and he will make a roster. So my completely amateur and uninformed guess is 5 get drafted (Fum, Ramesh, Jacobs, James, and Obasih), while Sheehy, Tindal and Jamerson make practice squads next season.
  8. Your missing a surprising amount of detail here as to how he has outperformed him. Go on...... Chacin has pitched over 60% of his career with the Rockies and still has a ERA under 4 and over a half a run better. I mean we are talking about a career WAR of 5.2 and peak of 1.8 vsersus 13.2 and 3.9.
  9. That scientist should be fired. Matt Harvey has a career k-BB% of 17%. Wily Peralta has never been over 11.1% any season. They aren't similar players outside of both were awful last season.
  10. Admittedly, its a little odd seeing a player's signing ceremony with the Brewers with a advertisement for an Australian program to curb the effects of alcohol usage. Anyway, good to know we are actively scouting Australia.
  11. If you are Ohtani’s agent, are you advising him to sign in Cincinnati? Where do you think shoe companies, sport drinks companies, car companies, etc. that will be providing a majority of his income for the first few seasons want him? Its not really big market bias, its just the best guess as to where he will land given all the inputs.
  12. It is interesting that ZIPs put the Brewers at 4th best in the NL and 84 wins. I haven't seen any Baseball Prospectus PECOTA numbers for 2018 but they have been far more bullish on the Brewers than others last season. Different systems trying to do the same thing can give different results. The Brewers would be foolish to ignore reality, but this doesn't sound alarms that the team should plan on a sub-70 win 2018 to me.
  13. Cole Caufield did indeed end up committing to Wisconsinover the weekend. Up to 23 goals in 17 games. A lot of events happen between then and now, but the 2019-20 team should be loaded.
  14. Yea, Mich State should be a great team. Indiana, Michigan, and Purdue will be really good. Wisconsin, of course, will be better than predicted. Then there could be a couple surprises like Minnesota, Maryland, Iowa. Indiana lost by 21 to a Larry Bird-less Indiana State. They are currently 86 in Pomeroy. Really good is relative, but Im not seeing it.
  15. 3 wins in the last 8 games, 6 of which are against teams that will not be in the tournament, isn't going to get it done. 26th in pairwise. Frederic has been held off the score sheet for 4 straight games. My hope was he would improve upon his >1ppg last season but not so far. Its a long season and hopefully Hayton gets hot for a extended period of time, but frustrating last few weeks. Maybe still a season or 2 away.
  16. Success in 2018: MLB Level: Have (2) of the top 50 assets in baseball after the season and 12 players projected for at least 2 WAR coming into the 2019 season Future: Have the stock increases by at least 7 of the 9 top 3 picks from the 2015 (Clark, Kirby, Ponce), 2016 (Ray, Erceg, Feliciano), and 2017 (Hiura, Lutz, Lemons) Maintain top 10 farm system with at least 4 top 100 prospects and (1) in the top 30. Find a longterm, more neutral AAA home Find a longterm and state of the art spring training facility Sign (2) of the top 30 international amateur free agents At least (2) of the (4) full season affiliates make the postseason
  17. I just noticed that the Badgers play conference games the first week of December including a game against OSU the same day as the Big Ten football championship. If it happens, Im guessing it is the first time that the football and basketball team played the same school on the same day. I presume this has something to do with the BTT a week early at the Garden.
  18. Wisconsin looked strong last night. Kobe King has a pretty looking jumper and impressive athleticism. Can create his own shot and will draw a lot of fouls putting defenders in awkward positions (plus he’ll actually make free throws…) Even looked comfortable with the ball in the post. If there are 41 true freshman sg better than him well.. recruiting rankings are imperfect; there aren’t 41 sg better than him. I cringe at possessions ending with Iverson or Ford putting up a 3, but if they can make 40% of wide open looks and force teams to defend that; Wisconsin will win a lot of games. Van Vliet wasn’t perfect tonight but he looked passable defensively and can cause problems for teams defensively. Cautiously optimistic right now, the offense will go through shooting slumps and Im still not sure what the offense is at the end of the shot clock. Trice hasn’t shown he can consistently make shots isolating or working off ball screens. But the defense seems good enough they should be competitive.
  19. I didn't have a means to watch Saturday's game but 5 goals on 12 shots seems like it was a bit fluky. Still will hurt if they end up on the bubble come spring, but I don’t know that it is concerning in the long run. Hopefully as the 3 freshmen defensemen mature and Greenway gets back, they can hit their stride in the second half. On a loosely related note, Stevens Point native (and recent Buckeye decommit) Cole Caufield already has 13 goals in just 9 games with the US National U17 team playing primarily older USHL competition. Wisconsin recruiting is pretty booked, but you'd think they can find room for him.
  20. They're both better teams. Frankly, there's probably a few more teams ranked lower that are better. But ad Brew said, win out and it won't matter. Undefeated Big 10 champ left out? I cant imagine. What are basing TCU being better than Wisconsin on? Massey and Sagarin both have Wisconsin higher as uninspiring as the Badgers wins have been, and Wisconsin also didn't give away a game to Iowa State. Sure its the same Iowa State team that beat Oklahoma; its also the same team that lost to both Iowa and Texas at home. The fact that there is no longer any criteria at all seems like we haven't gotten the ideal system yet.
  21. Im not sure I can agree with this statement. Since Ryan took over, Wisconsin has had (1) McDonald's All-American, yet has still produced 4 NBA first rounders. Other guys like Steisma, Leuer, Butch, Landry, and even Dukan have made NBA rosters. I don't think there is much evidence to say Wisconsin is "worse" at developing NBA talent, it just isn't landing as much of it as those programs. There are certainly many reasons why, but playing the game at reduced possessions as well as zero tolerance for turnovers are amongst them.
  22. 1) Brinson 2) Woodruff 3) Hiura 4) Burnes 5) M. Harrison 6) Clark 7) I. Diaz 8) Phillips 9) F. Peralta 10) L. Ortiz 11) Bickford 12) Dubon 13) Lutz 14) T. Williams 15) Stokes 16) Ray 17) Erceg 18) Yamamoto 19) Ponce 20) Herrera 21) J. Lopez 22) M. Feliciano 23) Wilkerson 24) Medeiros 25) Carmona
  23. Bumping this thread as Wisconsin hockey now starts in less than a week. I have yet to find a schedule that includes any kind of television schedule. I think missing the tournament this year would be a disappointment. Maybe last season raised the bar too quick and they have to replace Kunin up front, but its hard to imagine them not having some improvement between the pipes with Hayton and on the blueline. Interesting recruiting class with 4 forwards all 5’9” or shorter. I know the fact that commits happen earlier now limited who was available once Granato took over, but not what I typically think of with Wisconsin hockey.
  24. Anderson certainly brought in the right people to run the defense if nothing else, which sustained the current level of overall success. His biggest win was…. Melvin Gordon beating an overrated Nebraska team? But offensively its pretty clear Wisconsin was headed for a disaster. I don’t blame him exclusively for the Oline issues (lean years instate, unfortunately injuries Keeler, Gault), but that position group was not headed in the right direction. However, the fact that 2 years later, the only players in the 2 deep at a skill position that committed to Anderson are Kyle Penniston and Austin Ramesh is a bit revealing.
  25. No, we didnt, we had a historically bad month of April and never did anything exciting. What metric are you using to show Kansas City is a smaller market than Milwaukee? Media market size, total market GDP both have Milwaukee as the smallest in baseball. A top 10 payroll is 160 million+. No the Brewers cannot pay that much. Local TV contracts are continuing to grow revenue gaps. The Brewers are in a significant hole to half of baseball before anyone even sells one hot dog, parking pass, or ticket. Sure with the current structure, the Brewers can make a run, but large market teams are getting more efficient.
