  1. Teheran and Rea have been fine for what they were asked to come in an do, in fact more than fine, but we should also be exploring the market for another arm if we're serious about trying to compete. I'm not saying push our chips in but the sole focus shouldn't be on acquiring another bat or two. If Woody and Miley can't get healthy, it wouldn't matter if we traded for Mike Trout, you aren't winning anything with a rotation of Burnes, Peralta, Houser, Rea and Teheran.
  2. Didn't have much faith this series when I saw it was Houser, Teheran and Rea. We desperately need Woody and Miley back.
  3. Also can't hit LHP. Career 75 wRC+ (56 wRC+ this year). Candelario would be the superior option.
  4. UNO didn't play a ton of super high level OOC teams but they did end up playing a lot of OOC baseball during Boeve's time there so there may be a bit more to those numbers than just "well he played the Summit League." Competition was a lot stiffer in 2021 and 2022 than it was in 2023 though.
  5. Yes and no. Not entirely sure who UNO scheduled non-conference but, as a Wright State alum, we always schedule top tier OOC teams and Black held his own those games basically doing what he does now. Conference wise, absolutely, since the Horizon got gutted due to expansion since my days there. 2019 2 vs #10 Ole Miss, 3 vs #19 Oklahoma State, 1 vs #9 East Carolina (3-14, 2 RBI as a true Freshman in those games) 2020 3 vs #6 Mississippi State, 1 vs #1 Louisville, 3 vs #20 Auburn, 3 vs #11 Tennessee (8-34, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2B, 3B, 5 BB, 7 K) 2021 2 vs #2 Vanderbilt, 3 vs #23 Alabama, NCAA Tourney vs #2 Tennessee and Duke (8-23, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 2B, 7 BB, 5 K)
  6. Depends who they saw him against. If they saw him play high level competition, they may have seen a lot of weak contact but he's able to spray against lesser arms. I don't imagine a lot of people watched a ton of UNO games. I think his swing profile is a low impact one but I haven't watched a ton of him. We've had some success with my man Tyler Black so I guess I shouldn't be so quick to dismiss Boeve since they both have similar compact swing paths and hand speed.
  7. Not a fan. Low level of competition with no real standout tool and a low impact swing. Just don't see it with this kid to take him in the 2nd round. EDIT - Actually, I should give the kid more of a chance with the success we've had with a similarly profiled player in Black.
  8. He'll get every opportunity to start. Think Lance McCullers.
  9. I have no problem double dipping at 3B. Still a shot that Wilken ends up at 1B or DH long term.
  10. I really want Nolan Schanuel but I doubt we'll place 1st round value on someone that's a 1B/COF type. Kid can flat out rake. Real chance to add some real good talent to this system tonight. I'm excited.
  11. How do Rowdy Tellez and Tyler O'Neill end up getting the same settlement? One is a 0.8 fWAR 1B/DH, the other is a former 5.6 fWAR OF. Tellez has been worth 1.1 fWAR the last two seasons, with us, while O'Neill has been worth 6.9 fWAR.
  12. Likely a big nothing burger so it's whatever. Topa wasn't long for the team but the Mariners didn't give up anything significant here. Maybe Hernandez becomes a decent middle reliever down the line.
  13. Is it really "depth" if it's trash?
  14. Good thing you can dumpster dive in a multitude of ways.
  15. Dumpster diving seems to be the 2022/23 offseason theme.
  16. Because fans overvalue their prospects. You have to subsidize your roster. You can't just draft and develop and target spend and win in this league. Plus, there's just no real way of saying this as a fact. You're simply overvaluing prospects. Windows close rapidly for small market teams and there's no guarantee Frelick, Mitchell and Turang amount to anything. LIS, they aren't elite prospects. Kyle Schwarber is incapable of single handedly lifting a team? Didn't he basically keep the NL Champion Phillies afloat this season when they were sputtering as a team? Jorge Soler is incapable of riding a heater? I mean, the man won World Series MVP for a reason (but you don't count that for convenience). Soler had a 132 wRC+ for the Braves and hit 14 HR in 55 games. You're right, he wouldn't have made any difference for us. My bad. Only would have cost us money to acquire but we couldn't take that gamble because of JBJ.
  17. Again, those are just examples. They didn't build on the roster, they tanked it. They weakened a position of strength and didn't get an impact bat while doing so. I'm not talking about a million or two, here. I'm talking significant money. The money we gave to McCutchen. I'm also not talking about spending money on the hole they created by making a misguided trade.
  18. Yes because prospects are prospects and none of them are of the elite variety so going for it is better than the half assed approach we've taken. I'd rather go after it and lose than watch that team score 6 runs in 4 games and blow what looks to be our last realistic shot at winning in this window. If it fails, you have Burnes, Woodruff and Hader (at that time) that you can recoup prospect value on down the line. Do you regret trading Michael Brantley and Matt LaPorta for CC Sabathia?
  19. Schwarber was a National at that time, just a FYI. Those were just examples...Jorge Soler (Royals), Joey Gallo (Rangers), Starling Marte (Marlins) are also other guys that were actually traded. Making calls doesn't really mean anything. Just like we "made calls" on Juan Soto last year.
  20. Slice it however you want, $12 Million for a 4th OF was a wasted resource. We got more value out of Tyrone Taylor in the same role.
