  1. Smoltz had terrible luck last year. It's incredibly tough to have numbers that bad when your k/bb ratio is over 4. That ratio has been over 3.5 each of the past four years, and last year was the only time his ERA wasn't great. There's a good chance his ERA is back around 4 or even lower next year.
  2. Of all those guys, Smoltz would have me the most excited. His secondary numbers were still outstanding last season, and he'd almost surely sign a one year deal. I'm not sure how much the Brewers have left, but I'd give Smoltz 7 mil without thinking twice about it. I doubt they have that much available though, and I'm not sure how much less than that he'd take.
  3. The experience itself, that is largely the special effects/3D, was probably as revolutionary as Star Wars IMO. I was blown away.
  4. Just finished High Fidelity, and I'm actually also reading Rant now, Dave.
  5. League was very good last year. It wouldn't be surprising to see him have more value than Morrow next season.
  6. If they're going to sign a free agent, there's no reason not to wait another month and see what's left. Prices probably will have come down some by then.
  7. Actually, considering the Brewers' budget and current need to add pitching, Swisher's salary is definitely a problem.
  8. What great news to start the weekend. Excuse me, I am off to read NSBB and brighten my day even further.
  9. If the Red Sox aren't willing to trade Ellsbury and Buchholz for Gonzalez (or Fielder), then I don't really understand the Red Sox.
  10. It just occurred to me that they replaced Podsednik with a Podsednik clone, except now they're paying 5 mil for him rather than league minimum.
  11. Suppan is below replacement value. If they can add, say Mulder and another SP, I'd do this in a heartbeat. Imagine all the throwflips in Miller Park. That's gotta be worth something.
  12. Pierre as a DH brings back memories of Gwynn as a DH. And Kenny Williams' aggression is sure looking foolish with Alex Rios. I still can't believe he took on that contract.
  13. Hart, fine. Hart+Gamel, no way.
  14. She uslurped me.
  15. So does this mean Blue decommits again? Ouch.
  16. Just watched it today, and my favorite line was, "Thank God Russia doesn't exist anymore."
  17. Sure they regret the deals, but they aren't franchise killers. Boston still made the playoffs, so the consequences for them just aren't the same. Lackey won't cripple them either, even if he's hurt half the time.
  18. Yeah, I see that's three guaranteed years after next year now. Still, I like it for Philly. Lee wanted to go to free agency. They still get an ace long-term, and they wanted Halladay before Lee last year anyway.
  19. If it's only 3 years, 20 mil per, this is a great move for the Phils. Lee wasn't going to re-sign before free agency. They get Halladay for three years instead of Lee for one. I'm surprised they didn't have to go longer than three years. I also like this for Seattle quite a bit too. I think they may end up as the favorites in that division.
  20. It's from a few years ago, but does anyone remember offhand what thread had the photoshopped image of Lightning Rod Counsell? I think Brian made it, but not positive.
  21. Anibal Sanchez threw a no-hitter. Chad Moeller hit for the cycle. Bad players can have good games. 2006 was Olsen's best year, and he was average--maybe slightly above. In 2008 he threw a lot of innings, but they were at a poor level. 1.64 k/bb, 5.02 FIP... Those are bad numbers. His FIP has been above 5 each of the last three seasons. That shows that Washington knows what they're doing by non-tendering him.
  22. McClung isn't better than Villanueva. It's not even close. McClung career numbers: 5.40 FIP, 5.46 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 1.24 k/bb. That's basically a minor league pitcher. CV's career numbers: 4.53 FIP, 4.30 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 2.43 k/bb.
  23. Olsen stunk last year and really hasn't ever been good. Wang is somewhat interesting. Bill James is projecting a 3.81 FIP for Wang, for what it's worth.
  24. I didn't like him much as a pitcher, but he was a likable guy. Aside from that game he finished against the Cubs, another fun memory is him jumping around like a little kid in the bullpen when Braun hit his homer in that last game.
