  1. I'm also hesitant to say Looper wasn't any worse than in previous years. He's only been a starter for the last three years. Out of those three years, 2009 was his worst walk rate by far (and obviously home run rate). From 2008, his walk rate and home run rate increased drastically, and his k rate also declined a bit.
  2. I am pleased with this. I also don't think Looper was quite as bad as last year's numbers, but there's no reason to give $6.5 million to someone who was one of the worst starters in all of baseball last season.
  3. I'd be pleased with that deal. I'd be a little surprised if it was enough to get Nolasco.
  4. Happ is solid, but he's not as good as his 2.9 ERA might suggest. His K/bb is fairly pedestrian. I wouldn't be too happy if they gave up Gamel for him, but at the same time I think this would be a case of each team overvaluing its own player because I'd be surprised if Philly gave up Happ for Gamel. They'd be foolish to give up on Hamels, but if they did I would hope the Brewers would make an aggressive effort to get him.
  5. On second thought, I think my favorite David Weathers memory is when a friend gave him the nickname "Jeff Karstens' dad."
  6. We didn't just lose Hardy in this deal, we also lost Cameron. We lost 2 players that were 14.8 Wins Above Replacement the last 2 years. Thats huge. Escobar will be more valuable than Hardy was last year. The only thing the Brewers are losing in this deal is Cameron's offense from centerfield, but they're getting over ten million dollars for losing that. Let's see what they do with it first.
  7. A couple years ago Weathers gave up a walk off hit at a Brewer game I was attending. That's probably my favorite memory.
  8. Andrew Miller is a good suggestion. I'd love to get our hands on Homer Bailey, but the time to do that was probably a year ago; don't see the Reds giving him up now.
  9. Yeah... No way the Brewers could get Vazquez with Corey Hart as the centerpiece.
  10. Really looking forward to Assassin's Creed 2. Loved the first one.
  11. Any way we could wait and see what's done with the money Melvin saved before we conclude whether he made the team better?
  12. Why, exactly? The Brewers had no leverage with Hardy whatsoever. You can argue whether it's reasonable for him to bounce back, but that's really a moot point. Teams knew the Brewers were going to trade Hardy, so they had the Brewers over a barrel. There was no reason for someone to give up a better player than Gomez to get a guy who was so bad that he warranted a demotion to the minors last season.
  13. I'm not the biggest fan of UZR for outfielders because there are major flaws with how it's calculated. I'll say it was probably a bit much for me to say Gomez was definitively better than Cameron. They were comparable, but like you said Gomez will be better next season in all likelihood.
  14. No, he's better than what Cameron was LAST year, and Cameron lost a step from 2008. It's reasonable to expect him to lose a bit more in 2010.
  15. I lost it when they just started screaming at each other at the restaurant. Great episode.
  16. Gwynn had a 2.8 WAR this year. Gomez has been a 3.3 WAR player in his career. I meant to say defensively. And Gwynn's numbers were only produced once he started getting everyday playing time, which Gomez hasn't gotten yet.
  17. I wish people would stop comparing Gomez to people like Corey Patterson and Tony Gwynn. Gomez blows them away defensively (especially Patterson) and still has some potential left. DM made the comparison to Michael Bourn. Bourn was probably the worst everyday player in 2008 but had a very nice 2009.
  18. This isn't exactly true... we saved whatever Hardy would have made in arbitration minus whatever Gomez will make in arbitration. The decision on Cameron is at least a partially separate issue. Right, my mistake. 14.65 mil is what Hardy+Cameron made last year. It would have been fairly close to that this year, in all likelihood.
  19. Gomez is already better than Gwynn and actually has potential. As multiple people have mentioned, the Brewers aren't limited to just free agents. I think Aaron Harang is a good example of someone they could add without giving up too much in a trade--just take on his whole salary.
  20. 14 million bucks. When people analyze this trade, can we please stop forgetting the 14 million the Brewers saved?
  21. Well, he won't hit eighth because that's probably reserved for Escobar. You can see why Kendall will have no spot here. Give the job to Lucroy and use the Kendall money elsewhere.
  22. So then where does the pitching come from? And if he rebounded, you would have wanted that extra year before free agency.
  23. And if Hardy had another year like this one, you couldn't even offer him arbitration because he'd be forced to take it. Nobody would have forfeited picks to sign him.
  24. THIS is the definitive move of Melvin's Brewer tenure? J.J. Hardy for Carlos Gomez? Funny, I would have thought the CC deal might have landed that distinction. Teams weren't going to give up more than a 4/5 pitcher for Hardy. We don't need those. We did need a replacement for Cameron. Melvin will likely sign one free agent starter, but why does this necessarily prove he's only going to be FAs? Maybe he packages Gamel and Salome for an established starter who's making a decent amount of money? You can't say you know he'll get only FAs out of this.
  25. I'm not sure it's all that horrible. Gomez is even better defensively than Cameron. I like that they're serious about defense. Gomez is only 23, and hit more in the minors... This could work out alright. It frees up a ton of money. I will say they can't possibly re-sign Kendall now. Escobar, Gomez and Kendall in the same lineup is dreadful.
