  1. Keston Hiura is 2-2 with a homer and 5 RBI already in Game 4 of the playoffs tonight.
  2. Game 1: 10-3 Nats, Scherzer complete game. Good job, save the bullpen for Game 2. Brewers 3.5 back of the Cubs for now.
  3. 10-1 Nats in Game 1 today. Scherzer shutting down the Cubs. Unfortunately Game 2 looks pretty lopsided pitching-wise the other way (Hamels vs. Jefry Rodriguez). Cards down 2-0 but still early there. Gio looking alright so far. Everybody keep it up!
  4. My guess: 1. Cain CF 2. Yelich RF 3. Aguilar 1B 4. Braun LF 5. Schoop 2B 6. Shaw 3B 7. Perez SS 8. Pina C 9. Anderson P Kratz started the last 3 games, Arcia never starts when Anderson is pitching (not as many ground balls), and Moustakas is 1-8 lifetime against Holland, so this is my rationale.
  5. Given Keston Hiura's pretty steep drop-off at the end of the year, he seems unlikely to get this award. Corey Ray probably gets this award given the high HR/SB numbers, but I'm not really sure he deserves it either. Problem is, I'm not sure there's a minor league hitter that had a full season better than either of them other than some CS hitters. Jacob Nottingham had a solid season, but not enough to stand out necessarily. My guess is Player of the Year will go to Corey Ray. Pitcher of the Year I would guess is nearly a lock to go to Zack Brown: 127.2 IP, 2.40 ERA, 119/37 K/BB, 1.06 WHIP Some other guys with solid years: Trey Supak (A+/AA): 137.2 IP, 2.48 ERA, 123/44 K/BB, 1.13 WHIP Quintin Torres-Costa (AA/AAA): 55.0 IP, 1.31 ERA, 65/25 K/BB, 0.95 WHIP, 4/6 SV Jon Olczak (A+/AA): 58.1 IP, 1.39 ERA, 63/19 K/BB, 0.98 WHIP, 6/7 SV Cameron Roegner (A+/AA): 130.1 IP, 2.83 ERA, 88/39 K/BB, 1.28 WHIP Luke Barker (A+): 61.0 IP, 2.21 ERA, 63/16 K/BB, 1.03 WHIP, 20/23 SV Aaron Ashby (Rk/A): 57.2 IP, 3.59 ERA, 66/17 K/BB, 1.30 WHIP
  6. Unfortunately, I think the Brewers are going to have to operate as if Nelson will be unavailable for 2019. Just can't count on him yet with any certainty, so our plans for the rotation to start the year (in terms of offseason moves) will have to be planned accordingly. Count on any of these guys being in the rotation for sure (if healthy): 1. Chacin 2. Anderson 3. Davies 4. Burnes 5. Nelson The last slot (or two if Nelson isn't ready) would be up for grabs between: 6. Peralta 7. Guerra 8. Woodruff Given the number of these guys with options remaining (all but Chacin/Anderson/Nelson), I could see the Brewers looking to sign a veteran to a 1 year deal (or maybe some minor league signings like Miley) to increase depth. Miley may want a longer commitment than that but we'll see. The one thing we know for sure is that there will be some serious competition for rotation spots next March.
  7. Intrigued by them sending Derby. Guessing that means he'll get a 40-man spot this fall?
  8. He's not an ace at all. Never has been and never will. There was a pretty big caveat in my statement, but whatever.
  9. Not going to blame the Brewers offense for this one. Scored 6 2-out runs off Archer, and have had several hard hit balls right at guys since. Chase's home run problem is so longstanding that it seems unsolveable. He's an ace other than the fact that he gives a couple homers EVERY GAME. One of the most frustrating pitchers to watch.
  10. People had been talking about Archer to the Brewers for at least a year before he was traded to the Pirates, so it's a fair question to ask.
  11. Pina's last 16 games, dating back to July 29th (not including today): .413/.431/.500 (.487 BABIP) He's not really walking at all, and it's almost all singles, and it's mostly BABIP-driven. He had a .242 BABIP for the rest of the season before that, his recent hot streak has him back up to .289, so he was due for some positive regression which seems like that's what he's getting. Even with the big boost of luck lately, he's still well below his numbers last year, so not really sure what to make of him at this point. At least he's getting lucky at the right time for us.
  12. The wife and I are going to Raleigh next weekend and going to the last Mudcats home game of the year on Saturday. Anybody have any good recommendations for things to see/do in the area (or even just what food to get at the ballpark). I've only ever been to a few Timber Rattlers games as far as the Minor Leagues go and that was years ago, so I'm not really sure what to expect from the ballpark.
  13. Counsell going back to Cain-Yelich at the top today even though they're going against a righty. I think it's hard to go wrong either way at the top of the order, but did think this was an interesting choice.
  14. Load it up with lefties today 1. Thames RF 2. Cain CF 3. Yelich LF 4. Moustakas 3B 5. Shaw 2B 6. Aguilar 1B 7. Schoop SS 8. Pina C
  15. 1. Keston Hiura 2. Corbin Burnes 3. Corey Ray 4. Lucas Erceg 5. Brice Turang 6. Tristen Lutz 7. Zack Brown 8. Joe Gray 9. Mauricio Dubon 10. Jacob Nottingham 11. Marcos Diplan 12. Trey Supak 13. Troy Stokes Jr 14. Adrian Houser 15. Jake Gatewood 16. Payton Henry 17. Caden Lemons 18. Carlos Rodriguez 19. Mario Feliciano 20. Aaron Ashby 21. Quintin Torres-Costa 22. Trent Grisham 23. Cody Ponce 24. KJ Harrison 25. Chad McClanahan
  16. I know there are lots of guys saying they haven't been blown away by a trade offer for their starting pitching, but don't people say that every year and then guys get traded at the last minute? I find it hard to believe the Brewers can't do better than Gio Gonzalez, even without wanting to trade their top 3 (Hiura, Burnes, Peralta). If we give up ANYTHING of value for Gonzalez (meaning anything more than, say, what we gave up for Neil Walker), I'd be sorely disappointed.
  17. If the opponent has a lefty heavy lineup, I'd start Hader. Let him go 3-4 innings, then potentially you have Burnes, Jeffress, Soria, Knebel fill out the rest, with plenty of other options available if the game calls for it. All games start tied, no reason to wait to fall behind to start using our best options out of the pen.
  18. I just don't get this one. Acquisition cost would have to be very low, how much of an upgrade is he really worth over Wade Miley for 2 months? This seems more like an August trade to me.
  19. I'd say zero chance Nelson gets a start this year, but he could play very well out of the bullpen in September/October if he can get healthy, plus then the Brewers don't have to stretch him out. Save that for next year.
  20. They won't do a 4-man rotation, but the off days provide them with a lot of flexibility about who starts games for the rest of the year (as well as lining up a potential playoff rotation if it gets to that). Peralta will likely need to limit his innings at some point, so he could be optioned in August to make room for Davies or a new acquisition. Miley can fill in as needed but doesn't necessarily have to be a full member of the rotation. Not sure any team will benefit from expanded September rosters more than the Brewers. They have so much Major League depth on their 40-man right now, it should be fun to see Counsell and Stearns use all the weapons at their disposal every game. The whole month could feel like the playoffs (or a Rays regular season game) where pitchers don't go more than 3 innings and the bullpen carries the load. They're going to get a lot of opportunities to be creative the next couple months.
  21. Wondering if Counsell gives Aguilar a day off tonight or tomorrow (will want him in there against the lefties after that). Aguilar has been BABIP'd to death this month (.208 BABIP in July, .121 BABIP in his last 13 games), but maybe give him a day here, let Thames play 1B and Braun play LF, both of whom have looked pretty good lately. My guess will be: 1. Thames 1B 2. Cain CF 3. Yelich RF 4. Braun LF 5. Shaw 2B 6. Moustakas 3B 7. Kratz C 8. Arcia SS
  22. Lots of upside for the Twins, I think they did very well here. I sincerely hope the Mets ask for less for Cabrera, although Escobar does currently lead the Major Leagues in doubles and is close to the top in XBH so he could be an impact bat down the stretch, particularly against righties. Probably a good trade for both teams.
  23. Sounding like Thames will be back today. Guessing that means Broxton back to AAA, unless Aguilar is headed for the DL. Either way, I'm assuming Aguilar doesn't start today, so I'll guess: 1. Thames 1B 2. Yelich RF 3. Cain CF 4. Shaw 3B 5. Braun LF 6. Saladino SS 7. Miller 2B 8. Pina C 9. Guerra P If Aguilar is ready to come back, slot him in for Braun and move Thames to RF, Yelich to LF.
  24. I think Hiura's potential to be an impact bat is something the Brewers really need, and acquiring Merrifield would likely be to play 2B for years to come, so at that point you're looking to trade Hiura for pitching. All things being equal, I'd rather we keep Hiura and acquire pitching with other prospects, even if that means the pitching acquisition isn't as good as one we could get by including Hiura. If somehow we could get Merrifield for a price that allows us to deploy him more as a super utility Hernan Perez type, I'd be much more for that, but I'm guessing the Royals will price him high enough that that won't be feasible. I'm not really convinced the Brewers need to expend all their top prospects to lock up a "TOR" pitcher for a few years. I'd rather give it a shot and hope that Nelson returns to his 2017 stuff or one or two of our top pitching prospects turn into reliable mid-to-top of rotation arms. I just prefer that approach given the talent in our system.
