  1. Nice walk for Keon but that first pitch curveball he seemed like he was on it the whole way, then swung at the last moment when it was way out of the zone. Curious how he can seem like he's right on a pitch and then look stupid swinging at it. Nice defense from him today though. Did that announcer just call him Brent Sutter? I've heard Pena instead of Pina today and Vy-yar for Villar. I'm glad I get to watch the game as it would probably not be televised otherwise but these Facebook announcers are THE WORST!!
  2. "What do you throw to Aguilar here, 2-0?" Uh...not that.
  3. Both. I was hoping Merrifield would try to stretch it because before he even got to 1st base I knew he'd be a pretty easy out at 2nd. That said, Broxton did a great job cutting it off and made a very strong throw to 2nd. It wasn't even close. Wasn't even close? You must have seen a different play than me... Took a perfect throw to get him. Apparently we did. He was dead to rights.

  5. Not sure if this has been discussed, but I get the feeling we'll be seeing Brad Miller start at SS when Freddy Peralta pitches. His defensive liability at SS is limited for a pitcher like Peralta who is more of a strikeout/fly ball pitcher, where Miller doesn't figure to get as many plays at SS to make (he had exactly one yesterday by my count, a 7th inning infield fly ball, then was pulled for Arcia as defensive replacement in the 8th). He could be used similarly when Chase Anderson starts, and then use Arcia for the more ground ball heavy pitchers and maybe Perez for everyone in between? I would assume this was done on purpose by Stearns/Counsell, which would be smart to limit potential defensive liabilities.
  6. Todd Rosiak posted an article this morning about Burnes' progress at AAA. It's possible this is just a bit of a puff piece, but there are some encouraging bits in there for those who have been discouraged by his AAA numbers: https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2018/06/26/milwaukee-brewers-pitching-prospect-corbin-burnes-rolls-punches/733336002/ Things that jumped out to me: - Burnes has been working a lot on his changeup this year, and feels like he has made strides with it. Could explain some of his struggles if he's trying to develop a pitch he's not that great with yet in games. - His fastball is still listed as 93-96, which means his velo increase that was noted after his promotion to AA last year seems to have stuck around. - His coaches have good things to say about him as a pitcher, a competitor, and a teammate.
  7. Less than a month at AA but doesn't really look like the new level has slowed down his bat at all other than only one homer but not sure how many games it takes for power numbers to stabilize so it could just be noise in the small sample. I was more or less hoping he'd get a AA callup in June and a AAA tryout in August. At the end of August, they could call him up for a Major League tryout or they could send him back down to Biloxi for the playoffs. It'll be interesting to see how 2B goes the rest of the year. If it's an area of extreme need to start next year, it wouldn't surprise me if they ignore Super 2 and just call him up after a few weeks into 2019.
  8. Arcia looked different in that AB.....is he standing closer to the plate or holding the bat different or something?
  9. Yesterday felt like a bonus with the Reds coming back to win and Flaherty looking incredible, but I knew going into this series that today was probably not going to go our way. Mikolas has been great this year and despite a few very strong starts, Anderson has been pretty bad. The Cards offense looks pretty awful though so if the Brewers can get some runs early maybe it'll be enough to hold on. Any Cubs loss or Brewers win today would feel like EXTRA helpings of icing on the cake though. Probably going to need a strong day offensively to get it done.
  10. Obviously Hiura has been terrific this year, but probably the most exciting thing I've seen from him this year is how he battled through his slump at the start of the year. In interviews he was very candid about how he was pressing and just needing to get back to feeling comfortable. I'm sure most people here thought very highly of his bat and that he would mow down High-A on his way to Biloxi, and Hiura probably thought the same thing. I know his elbow probably contributed a lot to that slump, but nevertheless it's been impressive to watch his year progress after a slow start at a level that I'm sure he expected to crush right away. It's important to see guys overcome the hard times, because Hiura's great but he's not going to get 2 hits in every game he plays (although he's certainly trying hard right now). Seems like he's handling 2B pretty well and playing every day now, really hoping all goes well, he can get an August call-up to AAA and then we'll see him in Milwaukee late spring 2019!
  11. Found it on Brooks Baseball: Fourseam Fastball velo by month: 3/17 93.39 4/17 92.97 5/17 93.76 6/17 94.49 7/17 93.63 8/17 93.76 3/18 92.43 4/18 92.58 5/18 93.34 6/18 93.53 So he started a lot lower than last year, but he's working his way back up.
  12. FanGraphs has his average fastball velocities by year: 2016: 92.1 2017: 93.7 2018: 93.1 So at least some of that bump has carried over to 2018, and I think there's a way somewhere to look at it by month because at the beginning of this season, I seem to remember someone saying that Anderson's velocity went up throughout the course of 2017 and his 2018 velocity wasn't that far off month-to-month. Anyways, it'll be interesting to see his next start which is a day game on a super hot day so hopefully he'll feel right in his element again and will bring the heat!
  13. Williams kinda reminds me of Hader last year. Electric fastball with so-so command and a slider that could be solid but still needs work. Not saying he'll all of a sudden turn into a righty Hader, but the talent is certainly there to be a high-leverage reliever and it's nice to see him have more success recently. He was impressive last night locking down the win and getting out of a jam. They obviously like him and want to put him in those sorts of situations where he can finish up games but has a nice lead. The bullpen roles are increasingly fluid this year, and with Knebel/Hader/Jeffress there aren't going to be a lot of high leverage situations left over for Williams to take, but on the other hand it's very nice for a guy like Williams to get his feet wet in the Major Leagues with this much support behind him. Hopefully by the time we can no longer afford Knebel, Williams will be ready to step in and take his place.
  14. This post has been deleted due to violation of site rules regarding swearing.
  15. This is probably the "worst" Hader has looked all year......2 scoreless innings in a 1-run game with 2 K's......kid's incredible.
  16. I mean thanks ump but holy crap that slider was way outside, and the first strike wasn't great either.
  17. How's this for some optimism about the state of the team as a whole (but also the bullpen as a whole). We just took a series from the 1st place DBacks on the road. Jeffress didn't pitch. Knebel didn't pitch. Hader only pitched once. The other guys did a great job at holding our leads and obviously the offense broke out as well. But this bullpen is deep and isn't going to blow a lot of leads.
  18. I remember just thinking "I guess Shaw will do while we wait for Erceg" but this year he is proving that last year was no fluke. On pace for mid-30s homers, cut his K-rate by 5% from last year, still producing at a high level despite a career-low BABIP of .250 (well below last year's .312 despite a nearly identical hard-hit %). If his luck normalizes even back to .280 or .290, that average will pop back up to the .275 range, but with a slightly higher walk rate and improved ISO he could very possibly have an even better year than last year. His arby years aren't going to come cheap. Given his reasonably good defense at 3rd (not a ton of range but he makes some good places and keeps his error count low) or his ability to move to 1st as he ages, I wonder if it might be a good idea to try to extend him and maybe get an extra year or two of control.
  19. Guessing: Cain Yelich Aguilar Shaw Santana Choi Villar Pina Arcia With Choi as the DH.
  20. He looked pretty good to me, but maybe was trying to be too fine with the corners. The homer to Descalso: he put that pitch right where Bandy wanted it, it wasn't a bad pitch, right on the inside corner. Bandy probably should've held his glove up a little higher but that's where he wanted it.
  21. I think ultimately Hader never moves from the bullpen unless the Brewers have a clear need in the rotation. This year that seems unlikely to happen given our 3 top minor league arms (Woodruff/Peralta/Burnes) would be more suited to immediately move into the rotation and get their chance to help the team, plus Nelson set to return midseason. If Davies' injury turns out to be worst-case scenario and he misses a bunch of time, you'd still have Anderson/Chacin/Woodruff/Suter/Peralta with Barnes set to fill in and Nelson on the way back (wouldn't rule out Miley making a couple more starts this year either). As for next year, that would depend on a lot of things. Can Nelson return and be effective? How are Woodruff/Burnes/Peralta looking? Is Suter a rotation option anymore? Are we sticking with Chacin for a 2nd year? There could be an opening there for Hader to get his shot in the rotation, or maybe not, we probably won't know until the end of this season or maybe later than that. If Peralta can stick in the rotation, that might also let Stearns go trade Woodruff or Burnes for some help at 2B or C. Basically I'd love to see Hader get a shot in the rotation but as long as he continues to be a dominant reliever in multi-inning stretches I'm not going to sweat it too much, especially mid-season. A mid-season shift to the rotation might be useful for building up innings for next year though, but on a competing team it'll be hard to make that shift.
  22. I honestly keep forgetting that we have Knebel in the bullpen. When they brought Hader in for the 7th inning last night, I was thinking "hmm....well they could use Jeffress in the 9th or is Hader going 3 innings?". We essentially have 3 closers in Hader, Knebel, and Jeffress, plus Albers/Williams/Jennings are all doing great work, with Logan there for situational spots and Lopez is doing pretty well in long relief when we just need to eat up some innings. Plus Barnes should be back soon to give us another weapon. Not only is our bullpen the best Brewers bullpen I've ever seen (2011 with Hawkins/Saito/K-Rod/Axford was pretty solid), our minor league bullpen depth has been pretty fantastic too. This is the kind of bullpen that can work wonders in the postseason.
  23. Ump is really giving Freddy the corners. Credit to Pina for the framing of course but curious if the ump had a slightly smaller strike zone what this game would be looking like.
  24. Aguilar's numbers since Thames went down (not including today): .263/.367/.395 with 3 XBH in 14 games, 11 starts (49 PA). Pretty great OBP and he added another big XBH today. Certainly holding his own there against righties AND lefties. #TeamDepth
