  1. But he was great before that for what, two months. [sarcasm]Must be the pitching coach.[/sarcasm]
  2. which, by the way, has nothing io do with the departure of Derek Johnson. [sarcasm]Or the level of talent on the staff apparently.[/sarcasm]
  3. It's because he's a soft tosser that will get shelled if his location is off even in the slightest. Exhibit A. The bigger problem is that this description describes 4/5 or our rotation.
  4. I knew someone would go there. No one was touting DJ based on a 1 game sample size. But less than half a season is appropriate?
  5. See Castillo, Luis. By your own description he wasn't great last year. But he had potential and they knew it so they stuck with him. Sometimes you have to take as step back to take two steps forward. I'd rather have Burnes in the rotation figuring things out than watch Anderson pitch another inning.
  6. And yet, none of those 3 guys had great results recently up until this season. The Yankees were willingly looking to dump Gray after posting an ERA near 5 for them in 2018. Castillo has dropped over 2 runs on his ERA and nearly a run off his FIP from last season. Roark was coming off two very mediocre seasons in Washington. I don't disagree that the Reds have better talent in their rotation, but talent doesn't automatically equate to better results as we saw with all 3 of them coming into this year. Absolutely a pitching coach can make a difference in unlocking those results. I absoltuely believe that having better talent will lead to better results. Why else sigh a Grandal or Moose if they didn't think having that extra talent would lead to better results. Roark has had a very good career and I'd argue that his last couple of years were probably better than mediocre (last year more so). Castillo has always had this pedigree. His numbers will come back to earth a bit but he always had TOR potential. Gray was pretty darn good in Oakland. That talent didn't just disappear. Mahle was a top 100 guy. DeScalfini is the only one that hasn't been pretty darn good so does the DJ magic just not work with him? Still, he'd instantly be our second or third best pitcher.
  7. Ok, Chacin overperformed why? Just because he did? You cannot say they have a talent problem now and then point to Chacin from last year to imply talent, not coaching was the difference last year when he is literally the same guy. And Miley had pitched a total of 6.1 innings at this point for us last year. There were plenty who doubted the Chacin signing based on him leaving a pitchers park. He is most definitely not the same guy as last year but there are talent reasons to explain that, not just because a coach left. I mean, did Chacin just forget what he was taught to the point that he can't do it now? That just doesn't make sense. I think it has been pointed out that, given the bump in offensive production, the staff isn't performing all that differently than they did last year and they were bad then. Remember all the conversation about burning out the pen. The reference to Miley was about how they got better which seems to be the part of the season you keep referencing. They pretty much rode Chacin and Miley down the stretch and patch worked everything else. I just don't believe that they all forgot what DJ was teaching and just aren't capable of remembering what that was.
  8. I've seen more pitching "guru" types come and go than I'd like to admit. All of them were the best in the game.....until they weren't anymore. Mezzone was great until he didn't have Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz anymore. If you want to blame this all on not having DJ, fine. I'll side with the talent level being poor. So keep beating the drum I guess. The Brewers have gone from 4th in the NL in ERA in 2018 to 11th this year. The Reds have gone from 14th to 2nd. Neither team has great pitching talent. I would say DJ is a huge factor. When you have a rotation full of guys that depend on location and have little room for error, I would expect results to fluctuate. Luis Castillo is light years better than any starter we have. Gray is better. Roark is probably as good as Woodruff and we have nothing behind that except maybe Davies. I strongly disagree that this Reds staff is short on talent.
  9. I've seen more pitching "guru" types come and go than I'd like to admit. All of them were the best in the game.....until they weren't anymore. So keep beating the drum I guess. I never said all. I'm sure it's a combination. But like I said, the talent level is literally almost the exact same as last year. Miley was a godsend and Chacin over performed. Stick those two guys in this mess and things look a lot different. In fact, they probably look a lot like last year.
  10. Outside of Yelich, the best hitters are leaving after this year. We don't have much in terms of minor league assests and we have very little pitching. I agree we aren't there yet but it is certainly the elephant in the room.

  12. Nah, I've been told that if you squint your eyes and turn your head slightly to the left, everything is actually really good.
  13. I appreciate the optimism but I don't see the comparison to Houston. They had an outstanding farm and numerous young pieces. We don't. I agree, this is not Houston and it's not particularly close. I'm not even sure we have all that much of a "core" at this point.
  14. I don't think Nelson is ever going to be more than a middle/back of the rotation arm again. You can just see it in how the balls move for him now. I don't think this is something that's going to get better with time. He may well learn to pitch better and adjust, but his stuff is not coming back. You see it in the FB by far the most. His fastball had late life..and the fact that he could hit 97 didn't hurt. Not saying his career's done by any means, he's competitive enough that he'll figure out a way to be effective with the stuff he has now. But I was really hoping we'd see a version of the older Nelson and that with time he'd get most of the way back. I don't think there's much hope of that now. Which is fine but we simply do not need yet another low 90's nibbler in the rotation. It really is sad.
  15. This team is heading for mid-ling purgatory again. This won't be a popular idea but with the number of holes this team has it may be time to consider that this may not be the year. See if they can restock the system with whatever they can unload that isn't essential to the long term future of the team.
  16. [sarcasm]Probably something about how bad that Brewer offense has been.[/sarcasm]
  17. Let's assume the staff isn't performing much different than last year and any deviance is white noise, or juiced balls, or the pitching coach or whatever. Unless we're the only ones playing with juiced balls or several teams cloned DJ (as though that were the issue), it doesn't explain why this staff is bad compared to the current seasons competition.
  18. I know it's only one hit but with the work he has put into his swing over the past month or so, making adjustments, etc. one hit like that can change the confidence trajectory for him. That could be a huge, huge home run. He hit two or three home runs in a span of two games not too long ago and it didn't seem to help, but you never know. We've seen that pattern with Shaw as well. Hopefully this one turns our differently.
  19. I'm with you but how do you make it four more innings with this motley crew?? Exibit Z on why they need at least two more guys. It's the 3rd worst offense in baseball, you'd think they piece it together, but they've sure been making them look like the '27 Yankees, no doubt. Didn't work out well the first two games.
