  1. MLB's drop is fictional, as it is caused by a lower capacity in new ballparks as much as anything. I'd say the record of the '09 team is more the reason for the drop than the '10 version, as that's why the full season equivalents are down.
  2. The economy is better than it was last year, the GNP is up for 2-3 quarters in a row. The drop is from season ticket equivalents being down, and a slight drop in walkups.
  3. A small sample of AB's in September is hardly meaningful enough. As I said above, Prince, Casey, Ryan, and Corey will start almost every day, as they have earned that right.
  4. They did not add a 3rd C last year in September, so I doubt if they do this year. Stetter is limited to being a loogy at this stage, but if he can do that, he'll have a career.
  5. I don't expect guys to still be injured in September, and Gerut might be back as well. They might be able to create a 40 man spot or two using the 60 day DL, but they are not going to risk losing anyone to get one more bench guy.
  6. Balfour has been effective and cheap for ages, though McClung had moments as well, especially in '08. DLR could not have been kept longer, as they did not have a place to hide him when they contended. Brantley and Laporta were moved for CC, and no one regrets that. I can't count Cruz, any team could have had him for a 40 spot. He just was a late bloomer, why you take chances on good AAA numbers and athleticism. I was partially right, I said he might be a good CF...just leave off the "a CF" and I nailed it.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Balfour is the only one that bothers me, and that is minimal.
  7. I think it was Whitey Herzog that said they should just play intersquad games until AA. No concept of capitalism, but who cares if Arnett struggles in low a ball. His mechanics have obviously been tinkered with, if not totally altered. It takes a while for a guy to learn how to pitch the right way. What good would it do to have him dominate A ball and then blow his arm out at 23? Stats are all but meaningless, control and velocity are all that matters for those kids. Remember what good numbers Inman had? Sol what, he has awful mechanics that do not translate to the majors.
  8. His velocity is down 2 mph on his fastball and slider. That's substantial.
  9. Gomez was also several years younger than Cain at the same levels. I like Lo, but I think Gomez will break out. As I have often said, with his +15 UZR, he can make a lot of money if he just improves to .330/.400.
  10. I don't think Farris is an above average AAA 2B, his only skill is running fast. Being a 2B means he's unlikely to be able to be a utility guy either.
  11. I don't see Gamel as a sure thing, Prince, Casey, Ryan, and Corey will play most every day, and Mat has been up before. Cain, Cruz, Villy are the only sure things I see, and Doug has mentioned Jeffress. Gerut and Estrada may be added if healthy. Stetter seems like a fit as well, who knows how long Braddock will pitch. Many of the young SP's are probably at their innings limts, or near them as well. Too bad there isn't a C on the 40. EDIT: Interesting note about CV, as it appears he will end the season just under 4 seasons if not brought up. Not sure if they care, but it could also increase his value as well. I suppose a guy like Rivas could be given his innings. Butler may be an option, especially if they are not sure whether to keep him on the 40.
  12. Cain is almost as old as Gomez and Carlos outproduced him in the minors. Lo may be a late bloomer, but I'd still take Carlos' future if I has to choose.
  13. What Young Geezy said. What contender wants to give up a member of the rotation in July? In the offseason, many teams have 7-8 possible options.
  14. Sept time counts, of course it does. I believe it does not count as far as ROY eligibility. And having a kid who has thrown a season's worth of innings pitch a meaningless game in the last month seems pointless. Asking for injury.
  15. Right idea, wrong pitcher. Kazmir may well be let go for nothing if the Crew claimed him on waivers this month. However, looking for an effective SP that is soon to be getting expensive is a good idea. Nolasco looks like he's being kept by the Marlins, but someone along those lines. MIN has several young SP's, TOR, and so on. The fist year of arby is not too bad (often $3M), but year two and three are tough for budget conscious teams still plodding in an old ballpark/bad media deals. Cook has had astounding success, especially at altitude, but his K numbers frighten me. They are just so low, it's tough to find a comparison.
  16. Only $32M committed for next year, per Cot's. Rickie has more value because he plays 2B, but they usually get paid less. I'd say it's a no-brainer to sign him, unless you are afraid of injury (moreso than any other player) or that he will not accept standard position pay. Per UZR, Rickie is the best defender as well of the big 4 bats. Who would have guessed that a few seasons ago? He's barely on the negative side. I would prefer Weeks myself because of his OBP abilities as well.
  17. Hart is still unlikely to open next season in MIL, and Gamel has not impressed at 3B, with his defense or work ethic. I'm surprised it took this long. You also have to wonder if other teams may have prompted this, (Jack Z: How long before you make him an OF?).
  18. Why would anyone finds it a success to "ask for Bumgarner." He's not going anywhere, as is no SP that's in a contender's rotation. No one is dealing a key piece of their team as they try to make the playoffs. That's why the only "name" prospects are either blocked or a year or two away.
  19. What metric shows the Crew to have the worst defense in MLB? UZR/150 has them -5, underwhelming at best, and yawn inducing.
  20. Doug's statements about trading pitching at the deadline ring very true. Capps is more like Todd Coffey than an elite reliever, as I showed at Ramblings last night. Nice addition, but worth a top C prospect? Hardly. If the Twins wanted him so bad, he was available for free last winter. They're paying a premium for saves, which is just absurd.
  21. I see him in LF/RF or at 1B, as early as next April. Right now, it looks unlikely that Fielder and Hart will be signed long-term, and Weeks may be. Gamel and Lawrie are the two guys currently in the organization that could easily take those offensive spots, if not in '11, eventually.
  22. Mind boggling. If they were going to trade Ramos, 100 innings of Cliff Lee sounds a lot better than 20 innings of Matt Capps. Yes, they can keep Capps for $6-7M next year, but that's not much of a reward.
  23. The idea a contender can trade a member of the rotation is funny enough, but the point is well taken. I guess Ramos being worth Matt Capps proves anything is possible, but you hardly ever see #1/2 SP potential guys with 6 years of team control dealt, especially for a bat.
  24. As a non-drinker, is a dessert wine a wine you have for dessert, or a wine you have with dessert? I'm assuming it's probably sweeter?
