  1. "I wish Thames still fit into this somehow, he seems like a nice guy to want to keep around, but he just doesn't fit. You don't want him as a backup OF/1B." WHY NOT? He can do more, sure but he's cheap enough to be a huge plus backup. You figure yelich rests 10. Against lefties so broxton plays those. Cain for 15. Phillips can play 120 ish and not be overworked as a rookie. Braun can play 40 at Lf with some combination of yelich cain broxton phillips in cf and rf. Braun plays 120 as well. Leaves 80 games at 1b for thames. Cain yelich braun shaw requires an upgrade at 2b as is. If braun goes down and you dont have thames the offense goes down the drain. Trading Santana and Aguilar is as far as you want to go. Id rather bargain shop on corbin or odorizzi at this point because without a legit offensive weapon at ss or 2b or C the offense feels light without santana.
  2. I don’t buy this logic at all. Hader currently can’t throw his secondary pitches for strikes. He’s extremely wild in the zone. If he were starting, he’d be at 100 pitches in the 4th inning. Batters are often more patient early in games, and they won’t jump at all his pitches. I like Hader in the pen so he can learn to attack hitters and refine his mechanics. In the long run, I like him as a starter. But until he can consistently hit targets, he needs to work on short 3-9 batter stretches. Lol I was just going to post... why not both. 1st post is exactly right because of the concerns stated in the 2nd post. That could change... it hasn't yet. I want hader in the pen but if he refines his control I'll change my stance for 2019.
  3. Easy and likely take... I'm just spitballing wondering if stearns got some jedi magic to this pickup.
  4. An after thought lottery ticket. He's nothing until he shows something.
  5. Thank you... So in 2016 his slider went horribly negative. 5 years in his career it was negative. Each of the last 2 it was negative one very badly. The last 2 combined were worse than the other 3 negatives combined In 2016 fb was negative for the 2nd time in his career. In 2017 velocity came back and it got crushed. The sinking fb was good. Curve was good the last 2. But %s were around 14% % dropped as soon as he left mke but came back up last year. Not as high as mke years. So sinking fb (higher percent on 2016 vs 2017) more curveballs as in back over 20% like early career. Change is blah but not terrible. The slider inplosion in 2016 is interesting. No idea there. Maybe the down fb velocity made it too similar? He absolutely is a junk ball pitcher now. If they can get him on heavy sinkers and curves he should benefit some. The question is where's that slider? Seems like he should be at 60% curves 26% and sliders 22% and some change 12%. More sinking fb than non sinkers. All that being said. I could see him outperforming Garza. That's better than Willy and Guerra were. Half a War isn't insane to expect. Same numbers say chacin should go 40% slider 20% curve. Both numbers are fantastic for him.
  6. I didn't imply that strongly enough, but I agree on the team composition. We very recently had a very RH dominant lineup for a long stretch, I like having the power hitting lefties that we currently have. I have to think a move of Shaw would include signing Moustakas or Frazier or making some other move at 3b, even if moving him is unlikely. I tend to agree on McKenzie. I like the idea of targeting him, but I imagine he's pretty much off limits in almost any trade scenario. Yes but even with the santana shaw to phillips moose/Frazier swap we are still short on offense. In 2 years if we can get the upside of mejia huira at C and 2b well then you are on to something big. But cain yelich would point towards not wanting to wait 2 years. I'm 100% set on keep santana moving braun to 1st as is. And im 100% dreaming of yelich cain phillips with hopes that Huira run to the majors and can step in and make phillips huira comparable to santana villar/sogard. Until 2b SS C become plus offensive positions we can't easily jettison santana let alone shaw while keeping the offense as impactful as we needd it to be with the staff we have. Even adding salazar cobb or arrieta doesnt solve that. Teams close to a very solid rotation and pen (1 more starter and get nelson back, fperalta being hader part 2) but its not ace heavy, which is very hard to do so our hrs need to be multi run producing and a 5 pack of yelich cain thames/braun santana shaw puts us in a good place to do just that.
  7. I think a handful of guys are doing that with breaking balls, generally throwing a slider a lot more. Look at swarzak last year. Also look at McCullers in the playoffs. In one outing I think he threw 27 straight curveballs or something ridiculous against the Yankees. As long as this is a low $ deal, I don't mind it. If it's more than like $3 million I'll be a bit annoyed. Interesting... does anyone know where to find pitch type percentages for the last 3 years? Us adding 2 of the guys on that list and stearns pointing out both as rotation guys, smoke or not, is interesting.
  8. "Stearns replied that he was comfortable with the rotation and mentioned Chacin and Gallardo by name" Ok, smoke very possibly on Gallardo. But made me at least pause. Are we misding something on him? Like I expect something between willy and Garza at best. But this dude was sub 4 for years up until back to back 5+ era seasons. Did anything change with him in balt and sea? Those 2 were stark contrasts to the rest of his career. 30-31 age can bring forth a decline but is there anything else to it? Pitch selection? Hate to say it but alcohol?
  9. Correct keith and chl. The value was close. Adding mckenzie makes it horribly lopsided. The issue is making 2 win increasing moves then dealing the middle of your lineup away for prospects, great but still prospects. It's certainly a step back for 2018, and shaw doesn't have a replacement all that close. Value wise makes sense. Team composition, I just dont know. Mejia would have to explode immediately to salvage the offense if we did that.
  10. Solid add, i think we discussed this guy last year. He bounced back and is an upgrade on hughes by a bit. The outlier season set asdide he's out performed Huges by a bit for awhile. Knebel hader albers logan jeffress barnes is a solid group. Better than early season last year by a long shot. Still very cost savvy. Barnes is the biggest swing potential in the pen. Could be extremely good or like last year. 95 mil roughly. Still soft at 5 and 2b.
  11. Gallardo? I have more faith in Guerra than Gallardo. Gallardo is willy peralta. Corbin was a 4era 189 ip guy last year. The hell if we have 1 of those after anderson davies chacin woodruff. No 5.
  12. I think a few of these years are off. Pitching isn't strong enough yet. I'm of the belief that the teams opened a wc window for the next 3 years. Pitching is needed to aim higher. A threat bat at 2b SS or C is needed to be special. I think its a 3 year window. Biggest way to push that to 5. Burnes Ortiz Fperalta can extend the window. There are other options that could pan out but we need 1 more pen ace and 2 quality starters. Huira is the big offensive bonus who could cover what we will lose on offense as of year 3. Any of Lutz Ray Grisham Erceg would help too.
  13. Who believed braun when he said he can play SS in oct? Who believed 2b? No shot. YuniB thinks Braun in the middle infield is hilarious. 1b... I believe it. Until I see he can't play it I'm leaning my odds to him being able to play 1b higher than him not being able to play 1b.
  14. Cain walked a career best 54 times last year. He was sub 2k per bb. That's a little bit of old man game, seasoned vet showing up. Plate discipline like that will carry his war a long way.
  15. Didn't love the bullpen usage by CC but at the same time he was working with some slop. 2 biggest concerns with coaching and fo: Sedar at 3b, CC with the pen. Only dude I call at risk in the slightest is Sedar at 3b coach.
  16. Throwing it out there. Patrick Corbin, Pavin Smith, Jon Duplantier and Matt Tabor For Santana 2 top 100 guys, stop gap solid pitcher and a good lottery arm. Still too light?
  17. Pitching has a lot of options still on the table, even if I'm going to chuck the notion of gallardo in the trash. Suter is in the rotation today. Gallardo Guerra competing for long man. Wilkerson is the in case of emergency break open glass stash. Nelson comes back at some point this year. Burnes is in CS at some point this year ready for a call up. They could do something as simple as add Corbin (or corbin like rental) and we cover the small window (hopefully small) where we are under manned. So many directions to go in with Santana. Corbin level add would leave money for Neil Walker or Harrison. We could go after arrieta or cobb and stick with the 2b platoon. Basically saying, it's impossible to know but its 1 move, that we can easily make, away from being set.
  18. Yup... ugh. At least as a 3b coach I think a lot of little league coaches could rival him.
  19. What about Santana for Corbin AZs top 2 prospects and another bat we like in their system? Corbin and two top 100s... 63 and 96... plus a throw in. The contact tool on their LH 1b is right up stearns alley. They lost JD and can't afford him back.
  20. Last year would have been the perfect time to do it. We hadn’t planned on going anywhere. We had young outfielder prospects making their way up. We had absolutely nothing at first base. Yet it didn’t happen then. I have been fairly outspoken on this in the past but I’ll say it again now. It’s absolute crap that one league has a DH and one doesn’t. For like the third or fourth time in recent memory the Brewers are probably going to make moves they wouldn’t have had to make if they had a DH. Additionally Braun would benefit immensely from being about to DH regularly, as would the Brewers as a whole. We stole Thames and he lit the league on fire out of the blocks. The platoon worked just fine. Broxton and Brinson were bad last year. Phillips was real solid. But i dont think there was a point in time where moving braun made the team BETTER last year. By years end it was in talk for 2018. October Braun was stating that. Now its absolutely needed and there's no arguement that it makes the team better. We don't shuffle braun to 1st so we can play broxton or brinson over thames/aguilar while competing for a division crown.
  21. October 17 2017. Braun stated he's open to playing 1b. If personel requires it. Braun states he hates 3b. Braun states he talks to CC about playing SS all the time. Braun likes SS and thinks he can do it. We add yelich cain. Personel requires it. Check. 2b? Nope but if he thinks he can play SS sure he thinks he can play 2b. Can't play SS either. 1b... thats nothing new. Its not smoke. For 3 straight years we had less in the OF (4th) than we had at 1b. (Lind carter thames/aguilar) Its time to make the switch to 1b. But his range is bad. Sure. Is thames/aguilars range good?
  22. It is for some players. Isn't Santana a failed 1B experiment? I like to think Braun could do it without that much trouble...but then again why has it never been attempted before? Makes me wonder. Up til the suspension he was valuable in the OF and not fragile. He's old now... and frankly when did we have 3 starters worth starting in the OF in the past 4 years? Lind Carter thames/aguilar were better than any 4th OF in the last 3 years. Reynolds Overbay 2014 was the only year it would have made sense since he got busted and or hit 30. So this is the 1st, if not the 1st absolutely the 2nd time when moving braun to 1st would make them better. Even in his answer, if the personel requires it. It's hard to make a case that the personel required it before this year. Yes Santana failed at 1b. Braun failed at 3b (started off as a SS) mostly due to the 16 throwing errors.
  23. I'd love to see yelich cain phillips. Unfortunately we don't have an elite ss 2b or C to make up for the santana to phillips offensive downgrade. You listening Huira? You blow through a a+ and aa this year and this party starts mid 2019. Phillips huira lutz carmona are the only offensive prospects I give a damn about right now. That's not fair to erceg or feliciano but its true.
  24. And all the talk was how he came back limiting his repertoire and attacking. He's on a rp track.
