  1. They were spot on, at least so far. Very similar to Cain glove-wise, but closer to Keon Broxton bat-wise. He's had a few big moments with the bat, but the consistency isn't there yet. I certainly don't expect the .814 OPS he put up for the Red Sox last year, but if he could get it into the mid to high .700s, while continuing to play his upper end defense, I'd be satisfied.
  2. The guys on the 40-man who are not on the major league roster who would be in contention are Bettinger (Was hurt in ST, I think he's back now though), Lauer and Weigel. They could add someone (Zimmermann, Godley, Brown etc), but the 40-man is full and I don't think they'll want to drop someone until they have to. If it wasn't in the midst of a long stretch of games without off days I would've said Suter + bullpen. Which is still a possibility ofc. So all things considered I would expect Lauer. But it's hard to say since we don't know how anyone has looked at the alternate site. Perhaps Lauer has continued to struggle and then it probably won't be him. But he has only a few games worth of being terrible with the Brewers, and 250 IP worth of being an adequate bottom of the rotation starter before that, so as bad as he's looked I'd still value the latter higher. That is, unless the shoulder issues he had last year are still lingering. My vote would be for Weigel. I like his upside the best of those available. Big dude, several pitches he can throw for strikes, mid to upper 90s velocity. Not real sure if they see him as more of a reliever now, though.
  3. You are ok with Haines and his track record then? I understand you are the board cheerleader, and nothing and no one should be criticized, but c'mon dude. Now this is diverting into two different arguments. Is Haines the problem, or is "not acquiring the right bats" the problem? I get the idea that perhaps a new voice is needed in that area, but brewers888 is arguing that the team doesn't have the right personnel to sustain the offense. I'm not exactly sure if both of those arguments make sense simultaneously. I mean, if Haines doesn't have the right pieces, how can he possibly be successful?
  4. Yeah, players like Keston Hiu ... oh, wait. I still think Hiura can be straightened out but Haines is not the guy to do it. You're right. Hiura is the one to do it. His approach at the plate right now is a dumpster fire. That's on him.
  5. Yeah, players like Keston Hiu ... oh, wait.
  6. All depends on how many innings Houser goes tonight. If he can go 6-7, then we're probably looking at a bullpen day. If the pen gets taxed tonight, we better hope that Lauer or Zimmermann found something in the last few weeks.
  7. Nowhere did I say to cut Garcia. Not looking to make any rash decisions. Just want him on the bench where he deserves to be. The goal is to win games, correct? Play the better players, regardless of $. Telling me how many ABs Taylor has doesn't matter. He is outplaying Garcia, and it's time he gets his due. If Garcia earns his playing time back, great, but there shouldn't be playing time based on contracts, or what his OPS was 8 or 9 days ago when we have a guy on the bench that deserves a shot. I don't necessarily disagree that Taylor doesn't deserve a longer look. And I think he'll get it. But how does a guy like Garcia earn back his playing time while sitting on the bench? Taylor is a 27-year-old who is still getting his feet wet at the MLB level. This isn't a Trent Grisham situation where a young prospect broke out and basically forced his way into the lineup as a 22-year-old. Taylor is about as likely to go into a prolonged slump as anyone else on this team. Sure, there's a chance he could still break out and become a viable major league regular, but that would be an aberration for a player in his situation. But right now, he's the hot hand, so he should stay in the lineup this week. Once Yelich and Cain are back, though, finding time for him is going to get much tougher ... especially since McKinney is also deserving of a longer look.
  8. See I'm not really sure that something like 12-14M on JBJ then was necessarily a great allocation of resources given our OF situation (obviously thin at the moment, but not when healthy) I'm curious as to whether that money was truly "available" or if some guys are Mark A guys that he is willing to go over his set budget for. In other words perhaps if they didn't get JBJ that didn't necessarily mean that Stearns and Arnold had another 12-14M to spend how they saw fit. I think Attanasio got a little case of happy feet after Turner spurned him to re-sign with the Dodgers. He had already made the decision that he wanted to make a splash, but the Turner thing drug on so long that many of the other logical FA fits had already found homes. Bradley was really the last "big" name left out there, and if you squint hard enough, you can see a fit with his skillset and LH bat. It's unfortunate that his bat hasn't come alive yet, which is causing fans to question the deal.
  9. I feel like this specific argument is happening in roughly six other threads simultaneously.
  10. LOL no, not facts. The .797 was referring to what Garcia's OPS was 8 days ago. You are arguing a completely different point than what the original poster introduced. Actually, I'm not. Original poster wanted to know what is going on with Garcia. Is he hurt? I'm arguing that he just isn't very good, and his time with the Brewers hasn't been very good, so it's not really a surprise what we are seeing from him. You can't cherry pick his .797 and say that is the real Garcia, when he is sitting at .619 for the season. He is a below average guy that we feel the need to play, even though we have Taylor, who is outplaying him, sitting the bench. MLB contracts are guaranteed. The money they owe Garcia is a sunken cost regardless of his performance. Perhaps you are correct in saying that he isn't very good, but it isn't like they can simply cut Garcia tomorrow and not pay him. Perhaps he will eventually find his way to the bench on a more permanent basis if he can't figure out how to get out of this slump, but the mere fact that his .OPS has dropped 178 points in 8 days is a strong indicator that it is still extremely early, and making rash decisions is probably not the correct decision, either. Tyrone Taylor has looked fine so far, even exciting, but its 15 ABS in a career that only has 63 ABs in its entirety.

  12. Heck, I think I'd be happy with any of the players on that list. I see potential 2021 fits for every one of them. Farley's injury history is scary, but he's probably got the highest upside of any CB in this draft. I am leery of Rondale Moore, simply because it seems like the hit rate on those smaller, quick slot types is a little lower than other positions. But if he truly is a Tyreek Hill-type talent, that would be a lot of fun in this offense.
  13. I mean ok but just counting his nice start and excluding the stretch since is just statistical manipulation. His YTD stats are what they are and include both. It's April 27. Anything at this point is basically statistical manipulation. Briggs was originally asking if the slump over the last week was caused by anything, and Hopper was basically saying its because he sucks and hasn't been good this year. I was more or less saying that, up to April 18, he was doing just fine. That's the trouble with looking at April stats, though, and trying to make any type of determination out of them. The sample is just too small.
  14. Thames without the beard is not working for me. Unfortunately it appears that Thames suffered a ruptured Achilles his his game yesterday. Huge bummer for him.
  15. How is a .797 OPS not good? Saying he hasn't been good this year is kind of a fallacy. Before falling into this recent horrible slump, Garcia's results this season were perfectly fine. The .797 was back in '19. He was .659 last year and is at .619 this year. No, Garcia's 2021 OPS had hit its high water mark of .797 on April 18. It has plummeted to .619 in just over a week. I'm positive that is what JohnBriggs12 is referring to.
  16. Yes, his value could certainly bottom out, but I specifically remember very similar posts advocating doing the same thing with Corbin Burnes in 2019. Now is Hiura going to accomplish a Burnes-like resurgence? Chances are likely no. But I also don't think the Brewers are the type of franchise that can risk dealing off a bat with Hiura's perceived upside unless they are absolutely convinced that he'll never achieve that upside. And if they are convinced of that, it's likely every other team in MLB is as well.

  18. I think it was cost cutting...and I don't see what's wrong with that. We traded him in December when we still had no idea what this season would look like. They then signed JBJ over 3 months later when it was a little more clear they'd very likely have fans in the stands for some part of the season. People were getting vaccinated at that point. In most season, I'm pretty confident the Brewers would have kept Knebel. They'd JUST got through a season paying him ~5 million dollars when they knew he was coming back from TJ. If the argument is they were going to dump him either way, then it really makes no sense that they kept him for 2020. Same salary and unlike coming into this year, he hadn't shown his arm was coming back. So I guess when you frame it as "he's the highest non-closer, non-8th inning guy," you have to know that's not a real accurate description of him. He was closing games for the Dodgers. This can be summed up SO simply. He's a great arm, but the Brewers had cheaper and lost a LOT of money last year. That doesn't make Attanasio look like Robert Nutting. It was risk mitigation ... but in this case, risk mitigation is a close relative of cost cutting.
  19. Another run differential buster tonight. Despite that, the team will still be in 1st place tomorrow morning.
  20. He was outrighted at the end of Spring Training. Passed through waivers, and still in the Brewers system. But no longer on the 40-man roster. Surprised he's not back up if that's the case. Bickford seems cool and all but he is overmatched here. Theme of the night. Agreed, But Bickford has options. Black didn't, which is why he isn't on the roster anymore. It wouldn't surprise me to see him back at some point, but they can't shuffle him back and forth anymore.

  22. Bickford throwing harder than last year. But not a lot of movement. Most MLB hitters are going to crush a 95 MPH fastball down the middle ... except maybe Hiura.
  23. Cain and Yelich need to come back. Hopefully soon.
  24. yes Probably would have been a good bet. Not to be this time though.
