  1. LOL ... the hate post was almost right down to the minute! That's solid work!
  2. Davis at 3rd, Urias at SS, Hiura at 2nd and Smoak at 1st would give the Brewers the worst infield defense in MLB. The Brewers haven't let perceived defensive shortcomings stand in the way of putting together their ideal lineup in recent seasons. I doubt that is going to start now.
  3. Yep, that's what I saw. Obviously speculation ... but not completely out of leftfield either.
  4. Stearns don't snitch. Educated speculation is all you're gonna get. The Brewers are obviously not a team that sits on their hands, though.
  5. I read that as "the talk around the lobby" at the winter meetings last week. Can't remember where I saw it now. One of the "insiders" on Twitter. It was definitely not a made up thing, though. Brewers were one of the most aggressive teams in talks last week.
  6. All the reports I've seen indicate Urias will be just fine at SS. And with the way this team shifts around defensively, I think they could find a way to make it work. I mean, this is a team that, for two years in a row has put a lumbering 3B at 2B, and they've made it work. I have little doubt that they could make Castellanos at 3B work as well. Now obviously having a + defender like Donaldson at 3B is a better option, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they found a way to make Castellanos's defense work to make that lineup even more stacked.
  7. I have us at $103m spent. Anybody's guess how much is "available". Based on last year, another $25m or so. But no guarantee they open with a payroll as big as last year. Lineup will be something like Cain - CF Yelich - RF Hiura - 2b Smoak - 1b Garcia/Braun - LF Narvaez - C Urias - 3b Arcia - SS Braun will play some 1b as well. If we sign a 3b or Healy wins a job, Urias probably moves to SS. Sogard is available to fill in at 3b/2b/ss. Let's hope your lineup never comes to fruition. It would be one of the weakest lineups in all Mlb and coupled with a very weak starting staff, the Crew would win 65-75 games tops. Willing to bet on that? That is EASY money.
  8. Healy goes to AAA, or Arcia is dealt. Maybe both.
  9. Any reason you think that? I think someone is going to give him a 4/110 deal. Just the tea leaves I guess. Rumors last week that the Brewers made a strong play for Rendon. Healy is a (very) poor man's version of Donaldson, so it would stand to reason that he would be a solid back-up plan should Donaldson have injury concerns. Call it a somewhat educated hunch I suppose. Part of me also wonders if they may consider Castellanos at 3B, terrible defense and all.
  10. I think it's fair to have reservations. Lots of question marks for sure. There are certainly plenty of factors to point to that say the team will be good this year, though. I like Thames as well, but I think the move from Thames to Smoak is probably a wash. They are better on the bench. A big factor in how this offseason is graded is what they end up doing at 3B. That is TBD at this point.
  11. I predict there's going to be at least one more surprise in store, likely at 3B. The nice thing is that they have enough players in the fold to put a competent team on the field. He's at the point now where nearly every hole is filled, so he can value shop and strike if a big deal shows up.
  12. I'm starting to get the feeling that the Brewers may just be "in" on Donaldson ...
  13. With the Garcia signing, and with Gamel, Taylor and Broxton in reserve, they should be in better shape out there depth-wise. Wouldn't surprise me to see them grab a veteran OF to stash at AAA as well.
  14. Brew crew 92, wherever he is, is gonna be stoked.
  15. He doesn't have the batting average, but Smoak should be able to arguably replace Grandal as a selective switch-hitter with a gap-to-gap line drive bat and power to a favorable RF in Miller Park, along with a bunch of walks. With better protection in the lineup, I imagine we'll see a better average. He's likely a more complete hitter than Thames. That club option is totally Stearns being Stearns.
  16. Looks like Sogard is the Brewers new 3B starter. No ... it simply means that someone will need to be jettisoned off the 40-man roster to make room for someone at 3B. It is December. The roster is FAR from set in stone.
  17. Jeff Passan @JeffPassan · 1m Replying to @JeffPassan Justin Smoak’s contract with Milwaukee includes a club option for $5.5 million in 2021. He’ll be paid $4 million this year, and the option has a $1 million buyout, guaranteeing him at least $5 million on the deal. @JonHeyman and @Ken_Rosenthal were on it. So either a 1-year $5 million deal, or a 2-year, $9.5 million deal if Smoak is great in 2020.
  18. Jeff Passan @JeffPassan · 43s First baseman Justin Smoak and the Milwaukee Brewers are in agreement on a one-year, $5 million contract, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN. That is a very "David Stearns" type contract.
  19. Switch hitter, but is much better as a lefty stick. I think I like Thames better, but it is pretty much a wash.
  20. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman Brewers are close to a deal with a Justin Smoak, solving their 1B issue I don't know how I feel about this. I like Thames better as a platoon bat.
  21. No doubt. I fully expect Sogard to be a regular defensive replacement for Hiura late in games, coming in on double switches after pinch hitting. He is also solid insurance for Urias and whoever they sign to take most of the starts at 3B. This tells me that they were not satisfied with their infield depth last season, and signing guys like Sogard and Healy is a step toward correcting that. If the plan, however, is for Sogard to start regularly at 3B, I am not a fan. But I think they can, and will, do better there.
  22. The Brewers have had the opportunity to pick up many players over the years that have pasts with the team. Other than a few rare exceptions (Gio, Broxton I guess this year) Stearns rarely goes that route. There must have been something that Sogard has done, other than his stats last year, that convinced the Brewers that not only was he a good choice to bring back, but at double the salary that he was making when he epically flamed out in 2018. I'm guessing he took steps to remake his swing, which led to the power increase last year. Apparently the Brewers believe that is sustainable.
  23. Villar is a modest offensive producer. Comparing him to Shaw and Arcia doesn't make him better. Pointing at 1 of his 2 very good years in the last 4 doesn't change the body of his work to above modest. You're twisting and turning to make a point that was never there. This team could've desperately needed Villar in their lineup last season and it's not even debatable. The runs generated just by having a competent leadoff hitter would've played large in their offensive struggles. It was a huge whiff by our FO and coaching staff to move him when they did and for who they did. They've been chasing their tales at certain positions for awhile. But yes, point to your ONE stat as a reason he wouldn't be valuable to you. The people who don't believe that Jonathan Villar would have been an asset on this team last year, or that he would be this year, simply don't like Jonathan Villar. It's that simple. Granted, saying that he would of put up a similar line with the Brewers might be a bit of a stretch, but Villar's offense in the middle infield may just have been what was needed to put the team over the top last year. I think he was fed up with the sporadic playing time he was getting as a Brewer, so the trade was justified. That doesn't change the fact that Villar is a very good MLB ballplayer.
  24. You are probably right but shouldn't the Dodgers be desperate for a World Series Championship by now? Seems like if the Brewers fall out of contention before July and decide to move Hader, the Dodgers could certainly give up a ton of young talent to land him if they so choose. I personally think they should ... and have stated as such, only to be told that "the Dodgers are too smart to do anything like that. They can just throw money at their relief problem and it will eventually go away." Point is, they've tried that in recent years, and it hasn't worked. We'll see I guess.
