  1. EXACTLY!!! Mark A has money that he can spend. often times we say oh well we can't compete with these big market teams, but it is so innaccuarate to the extent that people say it. Can they spend $200mill a year? No, but they could likely go to $160-$175 million for a few years and then go back down to a more moderate level (100-120mill a year). Where did you come up with the $175M figure and how do you know M.A. can spend that much for 3-4 years? As far as I know, Mark A nor Stearns has ever come out with a figure on max spending. For reference on this particular poster's train of thought, I present Exhibit A: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=37899 Needless to say, the poster didn't comment following last winter's Moustakas and Grandal acquisitions.
  2. What has Greg Bird done in his career to indicate he has any value or upside? I mean, there are a ton of power hitting 1B types on the free agent market that have drastically better resumes. If the Brewers are going to move on from Thames, I'd much rather they get a 1B that has shown that they can do anything at the major league level.
  3. And if Brown is not drafted in the Rule 5, it also shows that perhaps these prospect rankings have misjudged him significantly. These rankings are put together by fans and/or journalists, for fans, with pretty scant knowledge of how teams value these players. I guess it wouldn't surprise me if Brown was drafted. It wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't, either. One thing that I was thinking about this morning, while looking at those four open roster spots, was if the Brewers are considering taking a player in this year's Rule 5 draft.
  4. I think you are confusing expansion drafts and the Rule 5 draft. With expansion drafts you can pull a player back after one is selected. Teams don't have that right with the Rule 5, though. All those guys, including Brown, Erceg, Webb, Griep and the rest, are eligible to be taken with no protections. I personally expect at least one Brewer to be taken this year. It's not really a bad problem to have, as having players that other teams covet in the Rule 5 draft is a sign of a system that is getting deeper on talent ... especially talent that is close to making a major league impact.
  5. You're basing that statement on what, exactly? Why does it feel like Groundhog Day?
  6. Surprising. But perhaps Brown is a better prospect in fan eyes than in the team's. Still hope he doesn't get taken.
  7. Wow. I'd argue that Garza was every bit the "name" Wheeler was at the time of his signing. Suppan was considered a major "get" at the time as well, while Lohse was a big signing too. Just because those guys didn't put up huge numbers in there time at Brewers doesn't mean that they weren't considered very big acquisitions at the time. In the end Suppan was a bust, but Garza and Lohse at least lived up to a big portion of their bug deals.
  8. Maybe his stuff simply regressed. Hard to say. Maybe they have big plans for those other 40 man spots. There's still time to protect one or two more players. They have five open spots remaining. And a few borderline guys already on the 40-man (looking at you, Saladino).
  9. Probably Garza, Lohse and Suppan via free agency. Track record certainly hasn't been stellar there. Greinke was hit trade-wise, as was CC obviously.
  10. Wheeler's injury history scares the beejesus out of me. I also disagree that a signing of Lyles is any sort of indication that the Brewers aren't being "serious". Wheeler may be one of the more talented pitchers on the market, but that doesn't mean that signing him doesn't carry a lot of risk. Everyone has their "risks." Brewers havent been real willing to do much and thats why you see them not winning WS. Define "much". Because this team has been very active in recent years acquiring players both via trade and through free agency to get better.
  11. Wheeler's injury history scares the beejesus out of me. I also disagree that a signing of Lyles is any sort of indication that the Brewers aren't being "serious". 12. The point will be to mock the boomer. Essentially the same as 80 other sitcoms where dad is the butt of the jokes. Nah, it's Fox. The off-color, slightly redneck blue collar dad (or grandpa) is going to be portrayed as the hero, while his snotty late teen or 20-something kids (or grandkids) are going to be entitled, lazy brats. It's a role that Tim Allen was born to play.
  13. Ray and Brown are locks in my opinion. I don't see them giving up on Erceg, either, so I think he'll be added. I'd guess Feyereisen as well, as there would be no reason to trade for him if they were just going to leave him unprotected, and he'd be a prime candidate to get picked as a reliever who throws gas and dominated AAA last season. Bickford, Sanchez and Webb are outside possibilities. I can't see protecting Hummel and QT-C
  14. Your logical take is very appreciated. I agree completely.
  15. It is certainly in question among a number of fans here. Heck, the Rumors forum is littered with ideas of guys who could be Arcia's replacement, and many posters indicate that non-tendered him, trading him or at the very least making him a backup is a foregone conclusion. Yes, I realize that Orlando modeling the new uniform is certainly not confirmation that he'll be back. But when you take that, along with the new assistant hitting coach's comments last week saying that he's looking forward to working with Arcia to unlock his potential, connecting the dots tends to get a little easier.
  16. I'd say this makes it a pretty safe assumption that Orlando is going to be a Brewer in 2020.
  17. Outside of Clark, they are getting little out of the D-Line. Lowry and Lancaster are just guys, and Adams has been too inconsistent. Martinez is is pretty terrible at MLB. That could be because they are expecting too much out of him, but he's getting taken advantage of in every game. When a defense is faulty in the middle, it doesn't really matter how good they are on the perimeter. My hope is that they spent the bye week figuring out a way to use Burks as an asset, and hopefully getting Campbell more comfortable in his S/ILB hybrid role. He did some good things in his one game so far.
  18. He's not getting snaps because there are three guys ahead of him playing very good football right now. If you want to say he isn't playing up to your expectations, fine. But declaring him a bust 10 games into his pro career is a major, major over-reach in my opinion. If we get to the end of the 2020 season and Gary hasn't yet shown anything, then you have a case. Now? No way. It isn't like the Packers haven't gotten talent on defense, though. Kenny Clark have been very good, and Alexander, while inconsistent, has also shown the ability to be a high-end corner.
  19. So 10 games is too early to call him a bust but it isn’t because he was the 12th pick? Who would you have picked instead that would have been worth that spot in your mind? Or what would Gary need to do so far for you not to call him a bust? Every year there are lower draft picks or UDA’s who make big impacts and outplay higher drafted players - doesn’t make the higher draft pick a bust after less than a season worth of games. Don’t take this as me saying I wanted Gary at #12... I just don’t think you can make that type of judgement When I watch the Packer games, I keep an eye out for Gary and I cant think of the last time currently where he showed up in A single play. I have to remind myself he's wearing #52. Lancaster makes a play or two noticeably in about every game of late. The feelings towards Gary being a bust is seeing opponents having a rookie picked after him contributing or making plays in the game. Fant was probably my go to on any trade lower. Risner was too. Burns was still there if you were committed to drafting an edge/LB hybrid. Haskins was near being picked. Just sliding back a few spots, you could have still had Gary or the other 3 who've been more productive. Plus the pick or picks you'd have received if for the 2019 draft to use. Devin Bush was an exciting player that I liked the most but drafted 2spots ahead of us. I really have the feeling he was the pick and in the span leading from Bush's selection to the Packers selection of Gary. That Gunst couldnt pull off a trade within that window. Sternberger if he can get a few targets and catches his way down the stretch I will probably not care so much on Gary. I've noticed Jace on the field blocking in a number of snaps lately. TE is something missing for Rodgers for awhile now. I'll feel less hurt on the Fant vs Gary miss. Edit add. Also one last thing on Gary. The Packers drafted him as a LB. You know freakish speed. Has he made a single play outside the pocket? Just another confusing disappointment of what his role is. Believing that there was a trade there to be had to move down from #12 is a seriously flawed assumptive leap. That is some hardcore barstool GMing right there. Reading this makes me throw you into the group with the rest of the fans who complained about the pick. You didn't like it and understand it then, so you are searching out every avenue to back up that thought and prove yourself "right". You're just piling more bad takes onto your initial one now, in my opinion. I'm by no means saying that Gary is going to end up being a stud. But continuing to beat the "he's a bust" drum 10 games into his career, and using flimsy logic (he's a OLB that isn't making plays outside the pocket???) isn't helping that argument. At all.
  20. I swear, every time he throws the ball, it appears as though he's throwing a 10-pound medicine ball. I don't know if it's his follow-though or something else, but his throws have always looked "off" to me.
  21. My wife and kids love the cream home and gray aways. They are indifferent to the pinstripes and the blue aways. Very happy the old logo is back. It should have never left. I like the pinstripes myself, but I really don't care. It's a uniform. Put a good product on the field, and I'm happy. Heck ... I'll be happy even if the on-field product isn't great. Because it's baseball, and I love it.
  22. Well, if our resident cheerio pisser hates them, it’s all good!
  23. Not sure I buy this. A guy that was being mocked in the top 10 as recently as early April was far from a reach at 12. And the Giants were rumored to be taking him with their next pick.... I believe that was reported a week or two later. Gary was problematic to Packer fans on draft day IMO because he was a guy they hadn't heard linked to GB and freaked out thinking about Justin Harrell as a result. People were up in arms about the Savage trade up/pick as well, and you don't hear those people owning that right now.... NFL football, more than any other professional sport, lends itself to "barstool GM-isim", where fans honestly believe that they know more than their chosen team's front office. That type of entitled attitude tends to get nauseating at times. Basically, the people that are complaining about the Gary pick now are the same people who complained about it then (because they didn't know who he was, isn't a WR, isn't a Watt brother, whatever), and they are propped up by the fallacy that his lack of measurable stats so far in his career proves them right. I couldn't tell you whether Gary is going to amount to anything. At this point, no one can. Anyone who tries to claim that they know what that guy's future holds is blowing smoke. He's a 21-year-old kid with tons of potential. That's really it.
  24. By your logic, not only was picking Aaron Rodgers at #24 a bust, so was any high pick who didn't come in and immediately start and put up star stats. I agree with those that have said that they likely could have gotten more impact this season by choosing a player from a position where they weren't so deep, but as far as calling Gary a bust, the only logical answer right now is "We'll see".
  25. How many of those have happened under this GM? Well, he did trade Ha-Ha ... but didn't draft him.
