  1. It is a problem, we have a perfectly healthy 25 year old who hit 30 HRs last season not in the starting lineup tonight. That is a waste. If Melvin could pull off the Brett Lawrie - Shaun Marcum deal we should have done something like that for Santana. Honestly, if DS thinks Brent Suter can consistently complete in MLB I don't know what to say. Last year, among all 157 pitchers with as many innings as him, his mighty 86.2 mph fastball was the second slowest only behind the 42 year old knuckballer RA Dickey. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=80&type=17&season=2017&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&page=6_30 You nailed it. I don't believe for a second that there isn't/wasn't a starting pitcher out there that would have upgraded this staff that could have been had for Santana and/or prospects.
  2. You don't really have anything. It doesn't work because they have guys that are everyday players on the bench, and guys that should be on the major league team in the minors. Sure, that is nice on paper, but it doesn't really help the team dynamic.
  3. I think there was probably deals out there for Santana. He has too many tools for the market to be completely cold on him, especially when you see an inferior player in Steven Souza (in my opinion) dealt for a nice return. I think the other team either likely backed out, or Stearns has placed a value on Santana that is higher than the teams that could use him view him at. That happens. You are right, though, that juggling the logjam isn't really doing his value any favors.
  4. Great idea, sit Braun every day, hell, let's just cut him and be done with it. This is kind of an overreactive response, isn't it? I don't think he was suggesting Braun be cut or never play. The reality is that based on our roster structure, both Santana and Braun are going to sit a lot more than we would like to see against RHP. I don't think Santana being his preferred choice right now is a super unreasonable thing. We can keep on trying to fool ourselves into thinking this roster construction makes sense, but it does not. Sure, it may in the future if someone gets hurt, but right now it doesn't. It makes me wonder which team backed out of a proposed Santana trade. Because that's the only way I can make sense of it. Stearns was stood up by someone.
  5. Nope, bench again. As much as they said there would be at-bats for everyone, I don't think that is going to be the case. Someone is going to get the shaft.
  6. Huge difference between the last man in the bullpen, who is basically an assistant coach/team mascot at this point, and a guy you are signing to start at the hot corner. I'm actually kind of surprised they aren't starting Jake Hagar there. He's got more upside than Blanco as well.
  7. Again, I know this. He is going to AA to catch. I wish he were going to AAA to play 3B, if it were between him and Blanco.
  8. It feels like we are arguing whether a prostate exam or root canal feels better. McGehee would have probably been bad, just like Blanco will be. I guess if we're going to go with bad, I'd rather go with nostalgic bad.
  9. 256/310/378/688 career; 292/360/502/863 peak 258/317/384/701 career; 301/360/499/859 peak Can you tell which is which? I'm not lauding the signing, but he is hilariously close to McGehee's numbers. McGehee has seasons of 23, 16 and 13 HRs. Blanco's career high is 7. At a historically power position. Yeah, neither signing would have been great. But Blanco is going to put up SS defensive specialist numbers. They very easily could have done better.
  10. Hopefully Erceg starts hot and advances up the ladder, because Blanco adds nothing anywhere in the chain. I would have rather seen Franklin get the starts at 3B. At least he still has some upside in theory. except Franklin will be catching I know ... which is odd considering the team seems to have better catching depth than 3B depth in the upper minors.
  11. McGehee at least provides some semblance of power. Blanco? Nada. Might as well be a 150-lb all-field shortstop.
  12. Yay! Junk with positional flexibility!

  14. Note to Stearns - Just because a player can play multiple positions, it does not mean they are valuable. What a nothingburger signing. Granted a guy signed to a AAA contract now wasn't going to be great, but this is such a blah move. I was hoping it would at least be a guy with some theoretical upside like Lawrie, or a guy who has played well in the past like McGehee or Hill. No, instead we get a guy who plays poor defense, has no power and an upside batting average of .260-.270. But you can throw him at multiple positions! Yuck.
  15. He said he would have found it hard not to. That's not the same as saying he's do it. And if he did, I wouldn't like him. I hate that do anything you can to get ahead and bend rules as much as possible mentality. I hate people like that in my personal life and in sports. I still believe the essence of sport requires some honor. While I personally disagree with your stance on Braun (I guess I'm more indifferent to him), I have enjoyed reading this back-and-forth, and I believe you have laid our your stance on your feelings toward him well, without getting overly defensive and/or telling people that they should or need to agree with you )besides maybe the anti-semetic stuff). You've had a solid argument to most retorts, even those that have been unfairly put together to even mean-spirited. I agree, too, that you can be a fan of the team while strongly disliking (or even loathing) a member of that team. If he does well and helps the team win, you are happy for the team, but not the player. I get that.

  17. Parity, parody ... dang it! Close enough. LOL
  18. I don't have a problem with it, but it seems kind of funny because, didn't it just start post 9-11 during a time of ultra patriotism and unity? Now it just seems like nobody wants to be that guy to do away with it, lol. If they'd just skip it, only like 4 people would even notice. I agree regarding its pointlessness, but eliminating a song that take about 1:30 to sing during the commercial break isn't going to significantly speed the game up.
  19. That'll do Jon! He booked it down the line and hurried the throw. Good effort.
  20. My only judgement is that they haven't been very good so far. Yeah not disagreeing with that but I want to see these guys make 4-5 starts and then make adjustments accordingly if need be. 4-5 starts puts them into May ... which was kind of my point to begin with. I guess I should have defined "early season" better. My bad.
  21. Not happening. It's up to the current roster to make a playoff run. That's putting a lot of pressure on these pitchers, though, Mr. Stearns.
  22. Yes I'm sure Stearns plan was to go through the rotation once, then make the necessary trades. LOL, early season doesn't mean early March. If the offense is good and the staff continues to struggle, though, May to early June wouldn't surprise me.
  23. Yep, that potential mid-season acquisition is looking like it might turn into an early-season acquisition. Hope you guys weren't too attached to our top farm kids, because guys like Lutz, Burnes and maybe even Huira are likely goners.
