  1. First Jordy, and now Jeff Janis. Female mid-30s Packer fans are really hurting this offseason.
  2. It is possible to be a "realist" as you say, and still not be condescending and bait people into arguments.
  3. Wow, being kind, Albers' look will fit in perfectly in Milwaukee.
  4. Smart money is on Albers. But considering it's Counsell, it'll probably be Oliver Drake.
  5. He's been impressive out there so far. Looks like he's taken to it just fine.
  6. [sarcasm]Pina either![/sarcasm] Yes, I know. Two at bats. Bt two flailing Ks isn't going to lead to more playing time for a guy looking at a platoon situation. And I like Villar, and think he should see the vast majority of the time out there.
  7. Well, Villar isn't doing much to justify the team's faith in him so far
  8. So much for the idea that dropping 30 lbs makes you a better fielder.
  9. Coulda called it. He was pretty horrible last year.
  10. Barring regression, and with the expectation of a Villar rebound, that may be the most solid top-to-bottom lineup this team has fielded in some time. They fielded this lineup a few times in spring, but knowing these guys will now be playing whole games just adds to the excitement.
  11. $14 million for a 1-year deal, and have to surrender a high pick. I get why they did it, but it screams "desperation move". Looking at Holland's numbers, it's easy to see why he was still available. He was downright bad in the second half of 2017.
  12. Looks like Holland is going to the Cardinals @JonHeyman Follow Follow @JonHeyman More breaking: #STLCards are moving close to a deal with closer greg holland. would fill their one hole. no details known yet. Solid pickup if true, as that is a pretty big hole for them. Also a move that will make them more competitive with the Cubs and Brewers.
  13. I thought the same. We hate Oliver Drake, but let’s get excited about a guy who doesn’t strikeout many and likes to walk many. Yay? He will be a last guy in the pen at best. I guess maybe you can hope to catch lightning in a bottle(over perform drastically by luck). Oliver Drake has more upside in my opinion and is better. Though I feel better with Jennings putting up better stats. I don't doubt that there may be some sort of advanced metric or projection somewhere that may indicate that Drake has more upside than Jennings, but I think this is a pretty clear upgrade. What did Drake do last year, or at any time in his career, that makes you think that he is anywhere close to better than Jennings? Besides a higher K rate, I can't find anything.
  14. Remember they will have to clear a 40-man spot for Jennings at some point, and he profiles in the exact role that Drake would fill on this roster. Swapping out Drake for Jennings makes the most logical sense. But given this team's odd roster-building tendencies, I could see them doing something different to fit Jennings on the squad.
  15. I doubt it, I think Thames was dealing with something minor but I don't think that's it. There's an outside chance we are working a bigger trade, but it's far more likely we are trying to get something for one of these guys or will simply cut one within the next 19 hours or so. There's 0 chance we will have Braun, Thames, Aguilar, and Choi on the 25 man roster tomorrow. Well this post aged well... LOL, that is awesome. Although it is probably technically correct if you change "tomorrow" to "by the home opener".
  16. The team is dumpster diving the day before the opener to backfill its LOOGY spot (due to injury) with another team's castoff. What the heck are you looking for? Jennings has been a useful role player in his career, and is going to come cheap. I don't think anyone is implying that they just picked up Andrew Miller.
  17. Yep, this may be the only time all offseason that a move that made perfect sense on paper for this team was actually executed. And it happened at 10 p.m. the night before opening day.
  18. Or maybe getting Beckham out of NYC and into a small town atmosphere creates a career renaissance of sorts, and he settles down with age to focus on getting into the HOF. I think i'd rather want Peterson, but I sure won't complain if either of them show up in town. Randy Moss was a model citizen during his time in New England. I have never gotten the impression that Beckham is a bad guy or a locker room cancer. He has never quit on his team, and has played injured quite a bit. Yes he does give off that "diva" attitude at times, but I think if he were on a team where he wasn't the focal point (which he'd never be on a Rodgers-led squad), he'd likely fall in line. I have to say that the idea of an offense with OBJ, Adams and Graham, and maybe even Cobb sounds pretty dang unstoppable. The idea that the team was in till the end on Allen Robinson, and showed interest in Sammy Watkins, makes me think that they are on the lookout for another top-end receiver to pair with Adams. Looking around the league, the Packers are one of only a few teams where an OBJ acquisition makes a lot of sense. Other teams where it may work include the Rams (their interest is already common knowledge), and the Patriots (because this 100% sounds like a Patriots move).
  19. Well, he'd be on the 40-man and technically optioned, so I think that makes the opt-out void. I hadn't thought about that, but I'm not sure what the wording was. Can a player exercise an opt-out if they are on the 40 man roster? I would assume not, but I honestly don't know for sure. This is probably a question that one of the team's beat guys would need to ask a front office person.
  20. Williams isn't quite ready. His command is still too inconsistent. The spot that will be open when Woodruff joins the rotation is long/middle reliever. Hoover's done that job successfully and deserves that spot after an excellent spring. You are probably right. Williams is already on the 40-man, though, while Hoover would need to be added. There are guys that can be removed to make that happen, though. I imagine Webb could easily be jettisoned to open a spot. There was no talk of adding him, even though that would have been the logical move when Logan got hurt.
  21. Yes, it really is as simple as that. Same thing with Hoover; he can be stashed in AAA until he's needed. They'll likely be #1 and #2 when Choi is optioned and Aguilar traded/DFAd. Yet the decision to consider things like 40-man roster spots and maintaing depth when deciding on the 7th/8th bullpen slots has people puking over the decision. Quite amusing really. As for the whole 14 position player thing: Again, why not? If you don't have to DFA Aguilar right now, don't do it. If there's a bigger chance of working out some kind of trade, or bigger chance of him clearing waivers, a week from now then that's what you do. It also means that the pinch hitting options for the first series at least will be Santana/Thames, Aguilar and Choi. That's pretty damn good. It's just the opening day roster. It's symbolic, and will change. A lot. 50 players used last year. Then consider that evenly distributed, there were ~22 replacement level (or above) players per team in the MLB last year. Of course you try to keep as many of those guys as you can. It's incredibly short-sighted to just look at the opening day roster. Williams will see plenty of time in the majors this year. So will Hardy. Probably Choi too. Besides all that, Drake somehow became the scapegoat for pretty much everything last year. He's better than the general consensus of him is on here. But this isn't really the place for that debate, and I doubt I can chage anyone's mind on that. I do understand several of your points, but it is difficult to cut through the thick condescension to do so.
  22. Well, he'd be on the 40-man and technically optioned, so I think that makes the opt-out void.
  23. They could throw Nelson on the 60-day DL to open a spot as well. My heart is hoping they don't go that route, and he will be back sooner, but my head is saying that is the likely move.
  24. Yep, DFA Drake to open the 40-man spot for Jennings, and send down Choi for Williams after tomorrow's game. Then make another pen move (Hoover?) when Woodruff moves into the rotation.
