  1. I'd love Pomeranz, as he'd immediately slot in as the team's top starter. But the Red Sox are contenders, and have next to no rotation depth. The Brewers might stand a better shot of prying someone like Eduardo Rodriguez, but he is coming off knee surgery, and is likely out till May.
  2. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22357092/new-york-yankees-acquire-russell-wilson-trade-texas-rangers We are a week and a half out form spring training, there are more than 40 big name free agents still on the market, and this is the news of the day. Except for one terrific day in late January, this offseason has been a major bummer. But at least NY has solved its QB issues.
  3. I'm not opposed to a Santana for prospects deal at all. However, the pitching thing has to be taken care of and I'm still of the opinion that Santana is part of that solution. That's the frustrating thing. Sure, Groome/Scherff/Raudes is a decent package of prospects, but all three are multiple years away from being MLB contributors. Yet when the Brewers are looking to trade prospects for an MLB contributor, its always Burnes, Woodruff, Phillips and other MLB-ready or near MLB-ready players that are talked about in the return. That Red Sox system is barren! If they want Santana, they better find a 3rd team willing to give up a quality MLB starting pitcher, and willing to take on some overhyped Red Sox diaper dandies.
  4. There's really not much in the Red Sox system that excites me. They've gutted it in recent years to make deals for guys like Sale. I think the only way they are going to end up with Santana is if a 3rd team gets involved that can offer higher-end MLB pitching for a collection of younger prospects from both teams.
  5. I agree, and would love to see another starter added via trade. But time is running out if they want to accomplish that before Spring Training starts. And it still leaves them without a surefire #1. Instead, it's a bunch of #3 guys with #2 potential on a good day. But who knows ... maybe they have some sort of analytic that sees Cobb, Anderson, Davies or Chacin as Ace material.
  6. Yeah, he may have some info that drives that but it's really just one of those prediction articles like the ones that come out when free agency starts. Having said that, I'm not sure I would like that move. I've seen a lot of informed back and forth as to his value/quality but I'm not sold either way yet. Cobb strikes me as one of those "better stuff than results" types. I guess it would depend on what the contract is. Stuff-wise I'd say he's better than Chase Anderson, so it would be a matter of whether a move from the AL to the NL will help his numbers significantly, and if Derek Johnson can coax better results similar to what he's done with Nelson and Anderson. Cobb wouldn't be the flashiest signing, but it also wouldn't surprise me to see him be the most productive of the "Big 4" two seasons from now.
  7. Well, it's only speculation at this point, but Bob Nightengale is predicting the Brewers to sign Cobb. I'd be ok with that, as it isn't near the financial risk it would be to sign Arrieta or Darvish. Cobb also has a lot less milage on his arm. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2018/02/07/mlb-free-agency-unsigned-players-yu-darvish-jd-martinez-jake-arrieta-eric-hosmer/315148002/
  8. +1 That's not the type of rotation depth we need.
  9. Phillips is a major league player at this point. Dubon over Hiura? Uh ok.... All these lists are arbitrary, so what's the point of ripping on it? This particular list is based on data sets rather than projections. They are going to reward minor leaguers that have put up more of a consistent track record. Hiura has less than 200 PAs to his name as a professional, so there just isn't much data to draw on. Dubon is only two years older, but has 5 seasons of stats to draw from.
  10. Here's another one that focuses entirely on ZIPS projections: https://www.brewcrewball.com/2018/2/7/16983758/five-milwaukee-brewers-prospects-land-on-the-zips-top-100 They are very bullish on Woodruff and Burnes, which is great to see. The big surprise, obviously, is Dubon's inclusion, considering a few posters here are happily including him as a throw-in in potential deals. Personally, I like him. I think he offers terrific defensive ability at 2B. The team doesn't necessarily need a ton of power from that position in the future as well.
  11. Plush, just stop responding!!!
  12. I agree. I also think they should go look. Because at this point what do you lose? Considering how many rocks they are turning over this offseason in an attempt to acquire starting pitching depth, I can say with 99.9% certainty that the Brewers will have someone at this showcase.
  13. I agree with this completely. Yes, I know there is some frustration due to the slow-moving nature of this particular offseason, but the competitive balancing-type changes MLB has enacted have done a great job of evening the playing field. In past years, there is no way the Brewers would have been competitors for free agents like Cain, Darvish and Arrieta. Now the Brewers are arguably the most active team in MLB this offseason, and it's great! I totally get that the players are frustrated, and if we continue to see ticket price, concession and merchandise price increases that price families out of the sport, it will prove that they are right, and the owners are the greedy scumbags they are being portrayed as. But I want to see this play out a little before I make that determination because right now, teams like the Brewers are coming out ahead.
  14. I get that we need to get at least one starter to make the team playoff-formidable, but is the starting pitching really that far off of what they had last year? Yes, Nelson is going to miss a chunk of the season, but doesn't Chacin theoretically replace some of his production? Also, a combo if Woodruff/Suter/Gallardo really can't be worse than the numbers Peralta and Garza put up last year. I mean, I get that we may see regression from Anderson and Davies, but expecting them to be demonstrably worse in 2018 than they were in 2017 is a pretty pessimistic way of looking at things. I still expect them to somehow grab a good starter before opening day, either by trade of FA signing, but the cupboard definitely isn't bare.
  15. This is great to hear. Definitely softens the blow of losing a prospect like Harrison. The Brewers are going to need to hit on their high-round picks if they are going to be able to sustain a competitive team at the MLB level for the next 4-5 years. It sounds like Lutz's star is only rising, which places him either as a valuable trade chip during this 4-5 year window, or as a valuable MLB player near the end of that window.
  16. Totally understandable. I imagine he will have to make a couple rehab starts as he'll be missing all of spring training, but being a vet I imagine it's not going to be a big deal. At least not a "we have to go throw $150 million at Darvish" deal.
  17. 10-12 weeks is roughly half the season Now when you are starting at a week before spring training starts. He'll likely be back by the end of April/beginning of May. On the shelf roughly the first month of the season.
  18. If Lucroy would come cheap, I'd be OK with it. Pina definitely had an unexpected year last year, but it isn't like he's a sure-fire top-end starting catcher. If you are looking at Lucroy as your #1, Pina would definitely be an upgrade on Vogt.
  19. I think if the Brewers are expected to eat all of Kipnis's salary, his deal comes pretty close to negative value. But with the way pitching seems to be valued this year, though, I'd argue that Salazar may have a bit more value than Santana. If that's the case, it might be a straight 2-for-1 deal. I guess it wouldn't surprise me to see low-level minor leaguers changing teams as well. I don't imagine it would be anything of big significance, though.
  20. I guess never say never, but I would think this is about 99.9% never.
  21. Yes, they are no doubt very similar in production. Granted Walker is a little older, but it isn't sizable enough to make a huge difference. Hard to see what metric would be used to make Kipnis that much more desirable than Walker. I wonder if the Indians are making taking Kipnis's contract a condition of any deal?
  22. I guess reading the tea leaves, I'm going to guess that Santana goes to the Indians in a deal this week for Salazar and Kipnis. Deal is probably held up on the prospect the Brewers need to include to make the deal fly.
  23. I get it. I too expressed skepticism leading up to the Yelich deal, as nothing seemed to be happening there. But then when it went down, I truly believed he had a source, as he had more info on it before it happened than anyone out there. Regarding your post this morning, though, basically calling his update last night a nothingburger, I would say it was pretty tame in comparison to some of the other skeptical posts, but it wasn't exactly super respectful, either. I thought there was some nice nuggets with some names that have been loosely speculated on in the past. I think people expecting him to break a transaction were asking for way, way too much.
  24. I don't think that's even a question. The traffic and energy here over the last couple weeks has been unprecedented and fun. Hopefully something will happen soon transaction-wise to keep it going.
  25. I thought it was funny. You have to laugh at yourself sometimes. If poking fun of someone is jerky then every single person on this thread is jerky. It's a message board. My opinions aren't going to get censored because someone has thin skin. There is a whole lot about what he posted that doesn't make sense and I've bit my tongue on a lot of it but the whole point of this board is contrary to the point you are trying to make. I guess one man's funny is another man's stupid and pointless, but to each their own I suppose.
