  1. If any of these guys get a shot (discounting injury), my guess is Dahl. The Brewers love to give LHH outfielders who have had some MLB success a trial run, and if Renfroe doesn't start hitting, Dahl is an easy swap against right-handers. He's a solid defender in the corners, with the capability of playing CF in a pinch. He could also see some time at DH.

  5. I know he was a free agent signing, but I just read an interesting note on Sammy Watkins that indicated that he was PFF's top-graded blocker from the WR position the last three years. Obviously Gute and Lafleur have a type at WR ... long arms, strong, huge catch radius. Watkins is probably on the small end of what they typically target at 6'1" and 210-215 lbs. But he is a hell of a downfield blocker. That makes me think that the Packers aren't going to consider players like Olave and Dotson, who are not graded well in that area. WRs who do have strong run blocking grades include George Pickens, Treylon Burks, Jalen Nailor, John Metchie, and Alec Pierce. If Burks is there at 22, I think he'll be a Packer. If he isn't, I think they take Pickens at either 22 or 28. Pierce is a very strong 2nd round possibility.
  6. Agreed. But as much as people are ragging on the negatives around here regarding Yelich, I think it's also appropriate to accentuate the positives. At the end of the day, this team's offense is going to be steered by Yelich. They've built the lineup around him. If he doesn't produce, it is going to be difficult for this team to compete. So when we catch a glimpse of vintage 2018/19 Yelich, like we did last night, it provides a lot of hope.
  7. Sure looked like we saw the good version last night. He is hitting most everything hard, which is an improvement on last year. I have guarded optimism, and he's going to have bad days once in a while, like the Golden Sombrero over the weekend, but so far, Yelich has looked much closer to a legit middle-of-the-order bat than he hasn't this season. If he can start driving the ball more consistently, watch out.
  8. LOL this is awesome. No, I don't care if it's in hindsight.
  9. I guess my way of looking at it is that I certainly acknowledge that the offense hasn't been up to par so far, but the raw material is certainly there to make it work. And at the end of the day, there is enough talent in this lineup for it to be better than it has shown. Sure, I would have loved to see another big offensive performer brought in, but players such as Renfroe and McCutchen are proven MLB bats, and being able to acquire guys like that to replace Garcia and JBJ should, in theory, be a net positive. Michael Conforto isn't the cure for what's ailing this offense. No, the cure is guys like Yelich earning their money, Huira living up to the early career success he showed, Adames continuing to improve, Urias getting healthy, and role players like Tellez, Wong, Narvaez, Renfroe, Cain and Taylor not being black holes in the lineup. This isn't a matter of going out and getting something new. It's a matter of the guys they have performing the way they are expected to.
  10. I don't know about accepting it, but what is the whining and complaining getting those who are choosing that path?
  11. Mejia? Maldonado? The current version of Molina? Really? Agree to disagree I suppose. I just thought your article was being unfairly harsh on a guy who's proven to be a solid, affordable backstop. It isn't exactly an easy position to fill.

  13. Right. The Narvaez hate in this article seems incredibly nitpicky and misplaced. Other than not hitting much in the pandemic year, he's been good. I'd say he's a step below Grandal, but it's a small step. He's improved his defense to the point where it is a positive. Regardless of what a stupid site like Fangraphs says, he's a top 10 MLB catcher. Not so bad for a bag of ball trade.

  15. The question is whether Seattle would take that package. Also, the Packers were prepared to pay Davante, but would they be prepared to pay Metcalf the same kind of money ... because you don't do a deal like that unless you have a long-term extension ready to roll.
  16. Laars Nootbaar sounds like a weird Swedish candy bar with hazelnuts and dried prunes in it.
  17. Always has had the talent, but has had trouble staying on the field. But he's young enough at 28 that there should hopefully be some juice left. Like I mentioned above, his heart/effort level has been questioned in the past, so I guess we'll see if playing with the MVP energizes him.
  18. Condescension aside, you are correct with Gute's 1st round tendencies, but that might be coincidence more than anything, as he did spend a premium pick (a 2nd rounder) on Elgton Jenkins, who was 24 at the time he was picked.
  19. Some unsubstantiated rumors are floating around Reddit and Twitter that Watkins is in Green Bay currently, and that the Packers plan to sign him if he checks out physically. Nothing concrete at this point, though. Due to Watkins's injury risk, I don't think he should ever be looked at as a potential #1, but he certainly has the talent to be a complimentary #2 type who could break out for some huge games.
  20. Watson visited yesterday. Bernhard Raimann is visiting tomorrow. I get that this team has thrown up smokescreens with these visits in the past, but where there's smoke, especially in the number of these older draft-eligible prospects they are bringing in, there might be fire.
  21. It bothers me that Adam Wainwright has seemingly found the Fountain of Youth and is seemingly good again after a four-year stretch from 2016-2019 where he looked like he was pretty much done. That isn't supposed to happen for pitchers in their late 30s ... but Cardinals juju pixie dust is strong. Hopefully the Brewers can right nature and trends today, and begin shoving Wainwright toward where he belongs - retirement.
  22. WR Christian Watson had a top 30 visit with the Packers, according to various published reports. He definitely fits the mold as far as what Gute typically likes in his WRs. Seems to be a late riser, as he's getting plenty of late 1st round helium now.
  23. Julio, these recap write-ups are absolutely fantastic. Thank you for putting them together! I love how optimistic and upbeat they are. I can tell in your writing that you are very passionate about baseball, and specifically about the Brewers system.
