  1. Man, that kind of seems like a lot for Schoop to be honest. He's not a true rental but not a ton of control, either. I guess that means they don't think Hiura is ready for 2nd base next year? Looks like they are planning on going straight platoon with Schoop/Shaw at 2nd the rest of the season? Very interesting move again by Stearns.
  2. Gausman is going to go to the Braves and Archer is going to end up with the Pirates. What a buzz kill. That ought to make the "stand pat" group happy around here..
  3. I think it would be shocking (and disappointing), if they don't add a starter. If they don't bring in another starter- even if it's a blah rental like Harvey- that is a pretty big gamble, IMO. Peralta is going to have to be shut down at some point, expecting Miley to continue being passable is a huge gamble, and who knows what Davies will be when he comes back- if he even makes it all the way back. If you don't add some type of depth for the rotation, you could be an injury away from Aaron Wilkerson starting games in Sept with the playoffs on the line.
  4. That is going to come back to haunt them. You can bet Maeda will go on to allow like 2 baserunners over the next 6 innings.
  5. How many hangers does Braun have to see before he can actually hit one??
  6. I think I would do this. I'm probably committing blasphemy but I am not as high on Peralta as the board is generally. I would do this as well. Peralta just seems like a guy who is always going to have issues walking guys, and will have a lot of starts where he struggles to get through even 5 innings. Not sure how his stuff will hold up over the long haul, either. I think he ultimately ends up in the pen or back end rotation guy. I wouldn't be opposed to dealing him when his value is high. Hopefully Peralta shows me I'm wrong tonight! I also think Gausman is one of those guys that can take off with a change of scenery. Especially if it's moving out of the AL East to the NL. He has great stuff.
  7. I'm in the minority here, but I'm excited by the move and think it might actually work out. First of all the upgrade offensively is huge, and Moustakas could hit a lot of bombs in Miller Park. Shaw is not going to be a good 2nd baseman, but with all the shifts the range needed by a 2nd baseman isn't what it used to be. There will be some mistakes here and there, but ultimately they have seen enough of Shaw that they feel the increase offensively outweighs the drop defensively. Also, they are going to limit his exposure there as much as possible. Saladino or Perez is going to start at 2nd against all lefties. Any game with a small lead and a defensive replacement will be in after the 6th inning. Also, Aguilar has started a little fall back to earth. I'm expecting some occasional games with Shaw or Moose playing 1st base as well. The cost doesn't bother me a bit. The comment that we gave up 2 top prospects is laughable. I like Phillips, but he hasn't really shown the ability to be more than a 4th outfielder at this point. Lopez is a non elite reliever. The cost is nada. I trust Stearns over the experts on here.
  8. Fascinating trade. Stearns is not afraid to think outside the box, that's for sure. Obviously they have seen Shaw get some work at 2nd and feel he can't be much worse than Miller defensively. I'm guessing between the shifts, getting back Arcia at SS and factoring the offensive upgrade they feel this improves the team. The plan is probably to bring in Saldino/Villar/Perez anytime they have a lead after the 6th or 7th inning. The cost for Moustakas doesn't bother me in the least. I like Phillips but he hasn't really shown anything other than an elite arm. Lopez is a fringe ML bullpen arm.
  9. Crazy. I just can't fathom that the plan is to move Shaw to 2nd base. Very, very interesting move. We'll see how it all turns out!
  10. I just can't seriously believe that they'd actually move Shaw to 2nd base..
  11. I think the Brewers would prefer that, too, but there has to be a #1 available, which may not be the case right now. Last year, the Brewers got a lousy break, losing Nelson too late in the year to deal for a replacement - I don't expect Stearns to get a guy, just because he's a pitcher, but I also doubt he's willing to risk a lack of depth in the rotation again. Suter is gone, Davies is a maybe, Miley has had health issues this year, and Guerra recently went down .... I don't care to see Jeremy Jeffress start a game in September again. It "feels" like a lateral move to me. Couldn't we insert Woodruff into the rotation and give us similar production to what Wheeler could? I I wish the club would give some of our younger guys more of a chance than what they are getting. No, he would be an upgrade and a big help. Wheeler would instantly have the 2nd best FIP in the rotation (following Peralta), if he's added. Not to mention, they need the depth help. It appears they have zero intention of letting Burnes start this year. Peralta is going to hit an innings limit and it's not unreasonable to question whether Davies or Nelson will ever contribute this year. Miley is not really any good and even with Woodruff being stretched out, they are still very thin. They are going to need another starter. Any more injuries and you will see Aaron Wilkerson starting in Aug/Sept in the middle of a playoff chase.
  12. In addition to what others said about potentially not exercising the option which would free up a slot, even keeping him in a way frees up a slot indirectly. As in it would be used on a player who would contribute to the major league club (I mean it's possible Kodi would've too, but also very possible he wouldn't). Spending a 40-man spot on someone who will be in the minors all year means you need another player in that position for the 25-man roster. Soria makes another reliever expendable, and in a way saves a spot that way. Correct. It's quite a long shot that Kodi would be a possible contributor on a contending major league team next year, which makes him a tough guy to stash on the 40 man roster especially how Stearns views and uses the 40 man.
  13. Assuming Soria is going to be a rental, which I'd say at least 75% chance he will be, in this case no, trading Medeiros does indeed free up a 40 spot in the offseason. I think this trade might the ticket onto next year's roster for Quintin Torres-Costa, whereas otherwise he likely would not have made it. So if it helps, it may essentially be adding Soria now and Torres-Costa later for Medeiros + Perez might be the way they are looking at it. Not saying it's right or wrong, I really have a hard time seeing Medeiros go. Just spitballing on what their thought process might be. I think it helps with the "40 man crunch" even if they keep Soria next year. I'm guessing the Brewers had ultimately decided Meideros was one of the guys that was going to be left off the 40 man. Coming to that conclusion and realizing there's a chance he could be taken in the rule 5 draft, they made the decision to move him. It helps because it's one less guy to fret over when putting the 40 man together for next season. One less tough decision to make this offseason.
  14. I like CC, but this strict "Knebel is our closer" stand is not smart and the type of thing that drives me nuts with so many managers. I dislike the one conventional closer thing to begin with, but to die on that hill with Knebel right now does not make any sense. With the Brewer's current pen, Knebel has the worst ERA and FIP, the highest HR allowed %, and the 2nd highest walk percentage. This is in 30 games too, so not exactly a real small sample size for a reliever. At the very least, Knebel should be used in some non closer situations to see if he can get rolling a bit before continuing with him being your one, conventional closer. Honestly, right now he's gotta be considered, at best, your 4th best reliever.
  15. Sucks to see Kodi go, but it's probably pretty fair value for both sides..
  16. I honestly feel the biggest position of need on this team is C. Pina is just useless at the plate and Kratz is no better. I still have hope for Nottingham, but he's just not ready this year. The middle infield is not good either, but at least there's hope with Arcia possibly coming back up and between all of Saladino, Miller, Villar, Perez; they should at least be able to get some decent production once in a while. I would still love to see a move for Dozier, but I just think Catcher is in even worse shape and should be the priority, but it is not mentioned as much around here.
  17. Do not like the chances of Williams getting through this inning without giving up some runs..
  18. Yep. His curveball was pretty good tonight but fastball was all over the place. Man, Pina is just a bad hitter..
  19. I'm absolutely against trading any of Hiura/Burnes/Peralta for basically anyone not named DeGrom. However, completely standing pat for an organization that is currently in a WC spot and has been to the playoffs twice in the last 40 years is beyond foolish. Especially when you consider the number of guys who will need to be protected on the 40 man next year, as has been mentioned a ton on here. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of guys in this system too but newsflash- not all of them are going to pan out, and you're going to need to move some of them because they are, or will be, blocked eventually. There are absolutely ways to improve this year's squad with guys like Dozier, Escobar, Cabrera, Barnhart, AJ Ellis, relievers, etc. etc. that will not cost guys who are really going to hurt the system if they are moved. This is the beauty of building a deep system. The Brewers and Stearns would be foolish not to pursue some of those avenues. So if the Brewers miss the playoffs by a game or two again but don't make any moves, ya'll are going to be happy because Stearns was standing pat!?
  20. The fact that this organization thinks it's better to trot Suter out there every 5 days over Burnes or Woodruff blows my mind. Suter is a gimmick pitcher with no stuff. Woodruff and Burnes are young with legitimate stuff, and nothing left to prove in the minors. They both have the make up of at least mid rotation major league starter, yet we are using them in the bullpen and using Brent Suter in the rotation over both of them. It makes zero sense.
