  1. :-) After tonight, Mr. melvin MUST be ringing John Schuerholtz all weekend for the prospect. PLEASE!!!
  2. Aren't you glad Helms gets the "feel good" RBI?
  3. Seriously, I'm not anti-Wes, im REAL-Wes. He has a bat, not good D. I said this 20 minutes prior to the error when I said he wasn't a good choice for 3rd in a pitchers duel.
  4. Spivey wasn't really expecting it because second was a SECONDARY base. Home eliminates the run possibility IF THERE IS AN ERROR IN THE DOUBLE PLAY!!!
  5. Well I think that's what people are advocating here. He should have had the double home to first.
  6. DOUG DAVIS FOR ACE...pro-temp.
  7. OK. Is ANYONE still questioning Doug Davis??? Go Doug!!! And who's up? THE PITCHER!
  8. I can't help but NOT be surprised, however. It IS Wes Helms. Seriously...when Bill and Daron are second-guessing you, there's a problem.
  9. This being a pitchers duel, I bet Doug Davis is wishing he could put Branyan back in there, knowing Branyan won't rake as well as Helms but at least the muscled mass (and I don't mean the deflated Helms-monster) plays solid defense.
  10. I, personally, think Cameron is going to fall to us. Upton and Gordon look to be as good as gone, but there figures to be at least one team before us (Nationals or Mariners) that is going to take a pitcher. If not, my pick would be Hochevar or Romero, depending on our preference of arms. But I don't see why so many are discounting the selection of Clement. A power-hitting catcher who could make a pretty seamless transition to the hot corner (well in my estimation because of his athletic ability). Zimmerman would be a safe pick, but I don't think SAFE is what Mr. Attanasio is going to be telling Mr. Melvin to be. Also, I could see us targetting Jered Weaver. He is last year's Golden Spikes Award winner. The guy pitched in Mark's backyard. But if we picked him so early, it would give Boras a lot of leverage in negotiations, so I'm left wondering if this is our best course of action. Of course, if one of the BIG 3 position players falls to us, this will probably be a moot point. :-) Here's hoping...
  11. It being 1:30AM and the numerous grammatical errors, I wonder if this poster has been up all night celebrating the Brewers victory. I can't really figure out any other reason to question Spivey's impact on the Brewers. Many will point to last year's collapse of the Brewers in the second half and say, "This is the best evidence of what happens when a team loses a player of Spivey's ilk." But I would look to another team and say the same thing. Of all the players the Brewers received in the Sexson deal, no one was more highly praised than Spivey. Overbay had only one season of sub-.290 batting, Capuano and DeLaRosa were both unproven commodities, Moeller's worth was limited to secondary back-stop, and Counsell...well I don't think anyone would argue he was the cornerstone of that trade. The player missed most by the Diamondbacks, excluding Sexson, was their former All-Star, Mr. Spivey. Now I know there are MANY factors that contributed to the Diamondbacks demise last season, not the least of which was the other unrewarding trade they made last off-season (Schilling) but you can't discount the absence of a Spivey in your lineup. He isn't a supserstar, or even really an All-Star caliber player (though it is debateable), but he is above-average offensively and he plays pretty good defense. Don't discount the value.
  12. And one other question, how would Stephen Drew project to 3rd base? He has a fairly high offensive ceiling, albeit, not quite the desired power one would expect (or so I had heard). Just curious if he could be the second best MAJOR LEAGUE-READY, 3B prospect in this draft.
  13. So, if by some small miracle, Justin Upton were to fall to us (contract demands/injury), you're still not a fan, xisxisxis? I just like to play devil's advocate.
  14. Oh! And before someone criticizes me for putting Upton in there, I don't think there's any chance, outside of a freak injury (Nick Adenhart who??), that BJ's little brother will be fast-tracked by Jack. But I do share Colby's vision of us challenging the Captain with a USC alum (I'm advocating this as I'm wearing my USC hoodie). And we have some great tutors in our ranks right now, with Borders and Miller hopefully on board for next year (I know Miller is signed but Borders is minor league contracted only this year I believe). As I've said many times before, I would much rather see us TRADE for a 3rd baseman than draft our future at that position. Scott Rolen... Aramis Ramirez...(though I think he is in need of a Helms-like diet) A-Rod... All of them were traded to their respective teams, and have since reaped rewards, even though A-Rod's rewards have been frequent criticism from Torre and Steinbrenner. Catchers, conversely, should be homegrown so that they can grow with the pitchers, allowing Clement to learn how to work the future throwers of our system. Our "own" Mike Matheny, upon being signed by the Giants, immediately requested tape of all their teams' pitchers to allow him to better call the games.
  15. I think both of you completely missed what I was trying to say. I wasn't speculating as to who would be available, as to just expounding my excitement over who is going to be there for us to pick from. And while I would love to get Gordon, I was also showing that even if he gets plucked early, the teams in front of us also don't have the glaring hole in their respective clubs at the catcher position. I say that we have a "need" in our infield, but only so far as to suggest that possessing the fifth pick, in a draft where there are 3 PREMIUM infield prospects (UPTON!!, Gordon, Clement) who should be cornerstones for their respective clubs, is a very advantageous position to be in. Also, I am never AGAINST taking a pitcher, in the simple hope that he becomes a Josh Beckett/Barry Zito-type. However, a pitcher is a bigger crapshoot than a position player. Seriously, I am just so excited over the future of the club. NO LONGER WILL I HAVE TO ENDURE THE RIDICULE OF MY FRIENDS FROM CINCINATTI!!!
  16. In my estimation, considering we loaded up on arms early in last year's draft and we are limited early this year witht he signing of Damian, we are most apt to take 1. Gordon 2. Clement 3. Maybin I know you like Hochevar and Romero, but we need to fill out our infield for the foreseeable future and this is probably the simplest way. And considering that I automatically have tabbed the Diamondbacks as taking Mr. Upton, if not for his immense upside, then for the fact that they still have yet to sign Stephen Drew and I don't see him signing, and the fact that, as you point out, this draft is deep in advanced pitching, how could we not have our pick of those 3? The Royals grabbed a 3rd baseman last year with their first pick (and one need look no further than the Rockies to show that 3rd base is the last infield position you want to stockpile) and traded for 3rd baseman Mark Teahan(OAK) and catchers Justin Huber(NYM) and John Buck(HOU). The Mariners would be best served to find some outfield prospects, but also have a tendency to stockpile pitchers. The wildcard is the Washington Nationals. The days of having one of the top minor league systems in the game are over. What's left is a few pitchers and some marginal prospects. More than likely, they'll take the best "high upside" player who fits a need and comes reasonably priced. But I just don't think Washington will go infield position player. My guess is a continued attempt at a serviceable future rotation, leaving us with Gordon or Clement.
  17. Colby, I know it is a bit too early to predict but why do you see us taking Clement over someone like Alex Gordon? I don't mean it to sound like I'm a pessimist, actually quite the opposite. I was born in Long Beach, but my parents divorced when I was 5 and I was transplanted in Green Bay. Thus, Clement's trip from the lonely Iowa cornfields to the sunny beaches (and the most beautiful women) of SoCal...I'm envious. Oh wait....what was I saying??? Oh yeah, GO CLEMENT!!! Seriously, his power bat with Brad Nelson, Nelson Cruz, and Corey Hart manning the outfield, Fielder and Weeks... We could easily afford to have Hardy's #8 bat and stellar D. So again I ask, can we PRETTY PLEASE trade for Dallas BEFORE he wins ROY??? Like I alluded to, always the optimist.
  18. Also, how much would the threat of not signing Jered scare Boras? He just witnessed the classic example of JD Drew cash in with the Dodgers; JD, who once invoked the ire of Curt Schilling by playing in the Independent Leagues after the Phillies drafted him in the first round. He then cashed in the next draft when the Cardinals met his demands. I would say that JD's brother, Stephen, is also going to be entering his name back into the draft, though the Diamondbacks have mounds of cash after the Shawn Green and Randy Johnson deals included over $10 million collectively.
  19. I don't see the Angels signing him for anywhere near what Boras is asking. With the Kendry Morales signing, and the Nick Adenhart signing, do the Angels truly NEED another bonafide prospect? I know a lot of teams would love to have Weaver, but Arte Moreno doesn't have the bottomless pockets a lot of people think he does. Do I have to remind everyone he LOWERED beer prices upon becoming owner??? That's not going to get Jered his fat deal! I mean, if Boras "feels" that there isn't going to be a marker for his client's services, then Boras will take the money and run. But I don't see it playing out that way. Boras will ensure that Jered gets his money, most likely from DePodesta, who already owns the rights to his big brother. I would, however, love to see the Brewers find a way, OUTSIDE OF USING #5 ON THE GUY, to insert the guy into the Huntsville rotation. He's a cool-demeanored dominator, who is almost major-league ready, though he wouldn't have pitched collegiately in over a year. And with the extra money we'll save from not having a 2nd rounder OR a highly-inflated payroll, you know we're on Boras's radar. And with Attanasio feeling a bit transplanted in the Midwest, you can bet Attanasio would jump at bringing a bit of California to Milwaukee.
  20. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but as of right now, the top 5 position players (because, outside of Townsend, I don't see a pitcher for us) would fall something like... 1. Justin Upton SS(hands down) 2. Cameron Maybin CF 3. Alex Gordon 3B 4. Jeff Clement C 5. Justin Bristow 3B (maybe a bit of a reach) Now any of those 5 would instantly be a top 5 prospect for us and fill one of the 2 biggest holes in our minors system. Which leads me to my question... How does Jeff Clement compare with Captain Lou? It would seem that Clement has the most power of any prospect in this draft and his ability to call a game has to have flourished somewhat while at USC.
