  1. From Adam McCalvy's article on 5/17: Riske disputed reports from a few weeks ago, including one on MLB.com, that he might have to undergo Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery if rest didn't heal the ligament. "Surgery was never even in the picture," said Riske, who is having trouble staying patient. "It was just a matter of getting that inflammation to go down."
  2. I think this is an important part of Melvin as a GM and it says tremendous things about our organization. Being willing to give players the chance to succeed, even if that means sending them to another organization, can only benefit the Brewers in the future. I also think I remember Melvin talking about releasing some veterans early in spring so they had a chance to catch on with another team. I think that is a good thing. I wonder, in the history of brewerfan, who was the closest to TGJ for Gerut?
  3. The Brash Brewers article mentioned in Schlitz001's post (about post #96) has some quotes from both Franklin and Lohse about the situation that talk about it. Lohse: "They are what they are. That's how they choose to present themselves and play the game. A lot of people don't like it. We're not the only ones." Franklin: "Well, they've got a little flair about them that some people don't care for. But that's just the way they are. So yeah, I think it would be more fun to beat them than it would be the Padres or something, just because of what they do after they beat you." Both appear to be talking about us untucking our jerseys and Franklin specifically mentions our winning ritual without specifically saying untuckem. Personally I think they just aren't happy with losing to the Brewers and are trying to claim superiority however they can.
  4. While I agree that Braun can be a bit brash, and there are definitely times where I'd like him to tone it down, what do you have against him as a baseball player? I personally enjoy his line of .303/.360/.586/.946 and players like him don't exactly grow on trees (as his OPS would be 9th among active players according to b-r.com if he were listed).
  5. That is what I get for seeing it from BP and another site and assuming they were correct. Thanks for pointing that out and my apologies to GormanHarvey.
  6. That is wrong. It is 3 runs' date=' not 3 earned runs. From baseball-statistics.com: QUALITY START: A game started in which a pitcher lasts for six innings or more and allows three runs or less. From BP: A "quality start" is defined as one where the starting pitcher goes 6 or more innings and allows three of fewer runs.

  9. Aren't those numbers the league OPS with the bases loaded?
  10. On Brewers live yesterday they showed the ML record and it was 27 games from 1883-1884. It was the Providence Greys over the Detroit Wolverines. Here is a link to the 1883 and 1884 schedule for Providence.
  11. I would love to hear you tell the NCAA women's softball team last year who carried the opponent who hit a game winning homerun and blew out her ACL rounding first that they have a loser mentality. Can you show me where I said anything about "a loser mentality" in my post? I wasn't talking about a homerun, I was talking about a Ken Griffey Jr.-like situation, and I'm sure that softball team would have tagged the girl out if the ball was in play It is my opinion that you don't stop running, just like if somebody gets hurt on the basepath they are most likely out (unless they can crawl back to the base). It has nothing to do with a "winner" or "loser" mentality, its how I was taught to play the game.
  12. The other team kicks the ball out of bounds because they expect it back when when play resumes. If that didn't happen I highly doubt they would give up the possession of the ball. I do agree with you that soccer is pretty sweet and I, for one, enjoy watching the premier leagues of Europe... MLS? Not so much, though if we had a team in Wisconsin I'd follow that too (but I suppose this is for a different thread). Back on topic: If it is unethical to advance on an injury, wouldn't it also be unethical for a fielder to tag out an injured baserunner? It is my opinion that you advance as far as you can, just like you tag the guy out if he tears his ACL rounding third. It does suck but it is part of the game.
  13. Instead of starting a new thread, I figured I'd just ask this here... Did FSN and WMLW do away with showing the game on FSN (with the WMLW feed) to the rest of the state when needed? I know they have done it in the past and the games not shown earlier this year were Bucks related, but before I make a pointless call to Charter I was wondering if the deal was suppose to be in place again this year.
  14. If that is the case, then it is a shame that one coach's ego was more important than what was good for the team. I really think it has more to do with our core of hitters starting to mature than anything else. I can't pinpoint a distinct difference between the taught hitting approach of Skaalan and that of Sveum, and I highly doubt Skaalan was teaching his players to not take walks or swing a crappy pitches. If it really comes down to Sveum being better at picking up flaws in the hitters mechanics or at preaching the art of going opposite field and taking a walk then he indeed should have spoke up in the past, stepping on Skaalan's toes or not, because it would have improved the Brewers chances of winning.
  15. Sure would have been nice for him to open his mouth over the past 3 years then if that was all it took... I can't figure out why he didn't do it sooner. I'm guessing it has more to do with the natural progression that players go through as they mature and develop as Ennder points out, as opposed to Sveum all-of-a-sudden getting through to these guys. I'd be willing to give Sveum more credit if the hitters are able to sustain this OPB increase throughout the season. Agreed 100%, I can't understand all the fans (not calling anybody specifically out on here, more of an observation with my friends and out at the bars) who are raving at how much better Rickie is doing as a lead-off hitter this year. It seems that all they see is him hitting for a higher AVG and completely ignore his drop in OPB. It does seem to me that he is hitting the ball hard (though he did do that in spurts in the past) and I'm willing to give him time on raising his OPB based on his history, but he needs to start doing it sooner than later.
  16. I'd love a chance at those tickets. If I win it would probably be easier to have them mailed but I'm sure a pick-up could be arranged.
  17. I know some were looking for some verification about what we heard last year from BA about all the games being in HD this year. This article from the Capital Times mentions that FSN said in May of '08 that they planned to be full-time HD in the first quarter of '09 and "that would mean FSN will produce its entire slate of more than 3,000 Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and college football and basketball games in HD." However, "FSN said the RSNs' HD roll-out plans will be determined by a number of factors, including team telecast rights and distribution agreements," so who knows when we'll actually get to see this happen. Does anybody know if any of the other regional feeds are full-time HD? Was there a massive change due to the economy going in the crapper or are we one of a few regions to not have it set up yet?
  18. If the Bucks were in the playoff chase and actually good I could see more people caring; and a reason to not be showing the Brewers game but, just like last year when we didn't have the normal production crew at the start of the year, for some reason the Bucks are more important to FSN than the Brewers. Ratings don't support them showing the Bucks (2.00 for '07-08 season from JSOnline) over the Crew (7.42 for '08 from the Capital Times). I just don't get it.
  19. The problem with that is you'd be pulling the plug on pretty much every 5th starter, and a bunch of #4's, in the game. According to THT (the article is from 2006, I'm sure somebody can find the updated numbers) the MLB average ERA for a #5 starter was 6.24 and the average ERA of a #4 was 5.10. I think a lot people have unrealistic expectations for almost any player on their team... Is Jeff Suppan good? Of course not, but he does have value, just not $12.5M. He is more than a servicable 5th starter and when people see him as just that, and adjust their expectations accordingly, it shouldn't be a problem.
  20. I'm not quite sure why track record is important and/or why we need one to make such a prediction... but even then Gallardo, in '07, won 9 games in 17 starts and Parra won 10 games last year in 29 starts. Considering we're expecting about 65 starts from the two, and the fact that their "track record" shows they are already capable of winning 19 games in a combined 46 starts I wouldn't put 25 wins outside the realm of possibility. Don't get me wrong, I see wins as a team stat so what EbbaStClaire says is way more important to the overall success of the team this year than if Gallardo and Parra actually get the W's next to their name.
  21. I don't doubt that they have potential to be in that range, I just think that with Weeks ability to get on base without a hit (OBP over 100 points higher than BA for career) makes him a more valuable lead off hitter to the Brewers. I'd have Hart lower in the order to take advantage of his SLG... Of course I'm always open to changing the line up based on how the season progresses, so Hardy and Hart could be interchangeable.
  22. I, for one, am not comfortable with a .323 career OBP hitter batting leadoff. If there is one thing I don't understand is what height has to do with batting first? Corey has some qualities of a typical lead off hitter (steals bases at a good clip, very good baserunner) and has shown the potential to have a pretty good OBP (.353 in '07) but I'd keep Rickie batting 1st because of his on-base skills. I believe that Hart could adjust by taking a pitch or two for Rickie, if needed, but I think a more sound strategy would be for Corey to swing at pitches he can drive no matter if they are the first or fourth pitch of the at-bat. What is this winners mentality and how do you have "it"?
  23. WEll, you know your messed up whem your readin the 24 horus of kanye thread and some of the music stars to sound good... al though i only made it ot page, well i guess i didn't even make it past page 1, just to the creepry edie murphy song... happy st. pat's day.. sad to see there isn't more traffic on this thread but i guess when I've posted twice in the last 3 months and there are two posts between it, it shouldn't be surpriesing. i guess we're past the gettig wasted and posting stage of our fan-sitedom..
  24. Weren't we a winning team the last two years? This season will be Sveum's 4th season with the Brewers as a coach so it is not like it would be new for the players to hear his opinion on baseball related matters. Now I understand that he was the 3B coach and the bench coach before but I can't imagine a player not being willing to listen to his advice about hitting because he's the 3B coach or the players all of a sudden embracing his knowledge because of a change in title.
  25. In TH's blog from 2/18, a direct quote from Attanasio: "We have a prudent amount of debt and we're trying to keep it that way. I am a little nervous this year but that will be my nervousness. We're at the limit of what we can support. And you know if we get to midseason and we're in a position to win, we're going to go for it." It is also mentioned in that blog that with the Looper and Gagne signings we are approaching $90 million in payroll, which includes potential bonuses and call-ups.
