    One thousand percent this. So many talking heads out there saying the Brewers could easily beat that deal but none of them talk about how the Dodgers could just sweeten their own. I also believed the Dodgers would get him for exactly this reason.

    I got a pretty good clue when I threw my back out golfing at age 14 that a life as a professional athlete just might not be in the cards for me 😄

    I thought I had read this here but maybe it was some other site but I had read that there was a desire to get Skubal traded without waiting until the last second so that he could take a physical with his new team in case something came up during that that would cause a team to fail him. Then teams would still have time to renegotiate terms or pivot to a different trade. Maybe it was a factor and maybe it wasn't but there are reasons not to wait until the very end of the deadline.

    I guess I would also say, I tend to think that teams listen to their players about usage more than you might think they do. They're not slaves (might be a harsh word but you get the idea) I think there is a back and forth about how players feel about what they're doing and what they aren't comfortable with. I don't have any evidence of this but it kind of seems logical to me. I just don't see a team forcing a guy to go out there and throw a 50 pitch inning just to take one for the team and flirt with a possible injury or arm issue afterwards.

    Josh Hader did when he went to the Padres, pretty much had the same song and dance there that he did here, wanted to be a 1 inning only pitcher only in save situations during the regular season. Playoffs he was open to more creative uses. All in the name of maximizing his upcoming free agency. The Padres FO complained about it after he left. Maybe their fans did too? I don't clearly remember but I know it was a thing there.

    My conspiracy theory is that there is no conspiracy theory and the Tigers simply preferred the Dodgers offer. The mental gymnastics involved to the contrary are... sure interesting though.

    I understand. I think the Brewers are competing right now but of course they're still at a very major disadvantage. I won't reiterate what I just posted in response to MrTPlush but those are my feelings.

    I don't think there are a lot of people here that think that but when it comes to the more general fandom I think it's a more popular thought there. I understand why folks want one, I'm not completely "against" a salary cap myself but I am skeptical how effective one will actually be. Months ago Passan published an article, based on the owner's initial offer, that painted a fairly grim picture. It didn't feel like it would curb the Dodgers by much and that small market teams would still find it challenging to compete. Anyway, it actually depends how it all shakes out and how it gets structured. If it happens at all. As far as the labor side of it, I'm for the players. I pretty much feel like they should just not agree until the owners cave and they do something else. That's my personal take.

    I remember when I first started being older than some professional athletes. Now that I'm older by multiple decades, well, I take that personally.

    I'm not really arguing that, my point (in this specific post, my overall point is below) was that the new salary cap back in the 90s didn't help or deter the Packers ability to win a Super Bowl after the '96 season. Their team was already headed that direction before the cap was implemented in 1994. They traded for Favre in '92, signed Reggie in '93 (pre-cap) to a record setting deal and even after the cap was implemented they still signed major free agents to get them there. The Packers had the means to compete regardless of the cap at that time because they had a great GM working on it. The cap wasn't restricting them back then. Reggie coming to Green Bay had a massive impact on other players wanting to come to Green Bay whereas before that the Green Bay PR was 180 degrees opposite, nobody wanted to come here. My OVERALL point was that people seem to think that MLB implementing a salary cap will help the Brewers get to a bunch of World Series when in reality it's still pretty rare for teams in other salary capped leagues to have multiple shots at championships in short periods of time. The NBA might be an exception but it seems contained to a handful of franchises. The Packers have won one Super Bowl in the last (near) 30 years and the other one that falls into that timeframe was the '96 team. The Vikings and Lions are still waiting for their first SB championship. There are ELEVEN teams in the NFL that have never won a Super Bowl and 4 among those have never been to a Super Bowl. Yay salary cap!

    They traded for Favre in 1992 he wasn't a free agent. They signed White in a non-capped year. Was money a problem for Green Bay when they signed him? The cap didn't prevent them from signing even more key free agents as you pointed out. I'm not sure this is an argument that supports a salary cap being the key reason the Packers got to a Super Bowl. Seems like revenue sharing is a major factor though.

    NFL free agency started in 1993, the salary cap began in 1994. So not tied to the salary cap.

    I think you'd have to build a case that says they definitively couldn't, therefore why I said "you could argue".

    The NFL salary cap was 2 or 3 years old in 1996, you could argue the Packers were already on their way to breaking through without it.

    That's fair, but they have every resource imaginable available to them. And one huge ego impeding them. The Packers have one super bowl championship in the last thirty-ish years, Is that what we're expecting with a salary cap? Because I don't think that's all that better odds than what we've been having.

    Does it not work in the playoffs as a blanket statement or did they beat the Cubs to advance to the NLCS and then lose to the twice consecutive World Series champion Dodgers? Because I'm not sure which paints the clearest picture.

    Or, they'd have kept Freddy and still did this trade and they wouldn't have Jett and Sproat. Or are we just assuming they don't make moves at the trade deadline if they keep Freddy? I mean, they traded for 3 pitchers and Freddy is one guy so with the power of math they still would have wanted more pitching.

    I'm officially over the complaining stage and have entered the move on stage. The Brewers traded two prospects out of their deep pool of prospects. If these guys were the next coming of baseball's messiahs and everyone knew it they wouldn't have been traded. If the Brewers just gave up the next Aaron Judge and non-pitching version of Shohei Ohtani then Matt Arnold should never work in baseball again. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict he'll have a long baseball career.

    I see no reason why the Dodgers would be afraid to compete with the rest of the league even with training wheels on. And they'd conceivably be able to keep more of their profits than they are now and franchise value would continue to climb.
