  1. It's amazing what a hot start as a pinch hitter can do for a fringe roster acquisition. Jesus Aguilar, Daniel Vogelbach and now Billy McKinney. Can you imagine what he'd be doing right now if he'd started cold? He might be on the bench right now. Baseball is really all about odds busting and making the most of an opportunity.
  2. Padres fans enthusiastically cheer a Jace Peterson strikeout not realizing it's like cheering a sunrise in its inevitability.
  3. I will say when going to a game back in the day, if Sheets was pitching I'd be a little more excited to be there than otherwise. Brewers haven't really had that ace to add that little extra that makes watching a game in person special. If Burnes and Woodruff continue to pitch high quality baseball that is something I would think makes a fan really want to be there for their starts.
  4. 5th definitely feels too high. The strong starting pitching is good, the run differential looks nice but it's a little early for a +14 to carry that much weight. They're still performing despite having 3 major starters on the IL. Maybe around 10th if I was making the list.
  5. Signing Yelich might be more of a prestige factor inside MLB than to fans of the team. The Brewers market themselves both to fans and prospective players. Is Justin Turner as interested in possibly becoming a Milwaukee Brewer w/o a guy like Yelich on the roster? He didn't choose Milwaukee but apparently he was interested enough that he took them seriously.
  6. 12 HRs in 1/3 of a season in 2020, if my math is correct that's on pace for 36 HRs.
  7. From MJS Yelich said saying he had a setback was "too strong." He said his back just didn't come around as quickly as originally hoped. "I mean, you've got a certain amount of days that you've got to play by (to avoid the IL), so you've got to go for it and see if you can make it," he said. "You know, obviously, I wasn't really in a spot where I was ready to go. So, when that happens you've got to take a trip to the IL and get things squared away." Asked if this back episode felt any different from those that sidelined him for short periods in previous seasons, Yelich said, "Not really. Pretty much similar stuff. Things that unfortunately I've seen a pop up for me for the last once or twice a year. Pretty frustrating, to say the least." As for what happened when he left the game in St. Louis, Yelich said, "It just didn't feel good enough during the game. I didn't feel like I could keep going. There was no, like, one thing that happened. It's unfortunate. Hopefully you deal with it, put it behind us and get back out there." None of this sounds like anything more than a mild flare up. It's usually something that lasts a few days, in this case it's taking a bit longer. Likely treatment may or may not include some physical therapy and/or chiropractic treatments, massages, heat/ice, yoga/stretching exercises and simple rest. Honestly just the fact he's in the dugout right now watching the game says volumes about how he's feeling. Believe me if he was feeling heightened discomfort he wouldn't be there.
  8. I feel like it's pretty much a given. Once you have back problems it stays with you for life. Mine started at age 14. It can also be set off by anything, I once threw my back out just opening the oven door. That's ridiculous. Just because his back is tweaked doesn't mean he'll have the problem for life. I'm not stating it as fact. If it hypothetically did it also doesn't mean it will ever be worse than a mild issue. Edit: I guess my 2nd sentence reads like I'm stating a fact but clearly I have zero basis for putting that on someone else just because of my own experiences.
  9. Unfortunately, you are probably right. You can try to lock up guys early by buying out their arbitration years, which we don't seem to do, but doing contracts like this just might be too much for us. His contract might preclude us from any ability to lock up Woodruff or Burnes. Of course that was always going to be unlikely. I think his contract is extremely likely to become an albatross. I believe his back is going to be a chronic thing. Braun had regular back issues too I wouldn't classify his as a disastrous issue and I'm not ready to dub Yelich's as worse. It'll just be a thing that happens from time to time. They reported he was going through baseball activities yesterday, he may not have responded well to that. It's always better to play it conservative and give extra rest than to try to push through it and make it worse.

  11. Extra fun things in the fallout from the Cubs suspension announcement: 1) Cubs fans on Twitter can't believe no Brewers are being suspended for unintentionally hitting Contreras with pitches multiple times. 2) Some Cubs fans aren't convinced that the Brewers weren't hitting Contreras unintentionally anyway. 3) Those same fans also aren't convinced that simply throwing at Woodruff justifies discipline since they didn't actually succeed in hitting him. 4) Proving not only Cubs fans are dumb, some Brewers fans on Twitter can't believe Contreras wasn't punished too. Do fans even know how baseball works?
  12. So he just needs to give his bat(and god) a good talking to and he should be good to go! A bucket of KFC couldn't hurt.
  13. I'm not sure that one actually belongs in this thread as I don't think it's pointless or dumb. I'm sure it has been done, I don't really remember specifically, but I recall reading an article last season about all the different ways teams had approached strategy with the runner on 2nd rule and that was one of them. Probably very dependent on matchups and the quality of pitcher a team has available. If you have your closer you're probably less likely to want to add base runners but maybe an inning or two in things change.
  14. Ah sweet justice. The Rolling Stones were wrong, I do get satisfaction from this. Adam McCalvy @AdamMcCalvy Cubs reliever Ryan Tepera suspended 3g and fined for intentionally throwing at Brandon Woodruff on Tuesday. The suspension was to begin Friday, but Tepera has exercised his right to appeal, MLB says. Cubs manager David Ross suspended one game and fined. He’ll be out Friday.
  15. He has a current 5 game hit streak... Hasn't drawn a single walk yet which I think is a big factor in his slump. His career stats don't show walks being a problem for him, so that's flukey. And his strikeouts seem elevated more than normal. We were all pretty down on Urias not real long ago but in a handful of games he gets 2 big hits and draws some walks and now we kind of see how he can be a valuable player. JBJ could turn it around fairly quickly, maybe he's showing signs with the modest hit streak.
  16. Well they've scored 34 runs (including today's game) in their last 6 games compared to 19 in their first 6 so I think they're on the right track. The first week might end up being the outlier.
  17. More fun stats about Burnes Corbin Burnes this year has allowed 1 home run, 1 triple, 1 double, and 1 single. He pitched for the cycle
