  1. I get it, it’s an IGT where we’re getting swept by the Cards (check my signature—my patience for this Cardinal crap is shallower than many), so people are in no mood. But I’m going to lay down my marker. Here is what matters by this point: put the best team together you can (Brewers have done more with less than just about anyone, so check), make the postseason (check), avoid the play-in (99.99% there). That’s it, that’s the list, because the postseason is a dart throw. The regular season is like counting cards, and the postseason is craps. The odds were always against us anyway, so let’s spin. Worrying about anything else is pointless. The ONLY things that concern me about this series right now is A health (Williams) and B mental state. I’m on record as saying the Brewers can build mental fortitude by snapping this losing streak and entering the postseason less mentally fragile than they would otherwise be. Success does not build resiliency, overcoming failure does. I am supremely confident in winning the division, which means overcoming their current struggles. Anything can still happen, but nobody is losing the World Series right now. Our chances are not appreciably worse than when we entered the week, and that’s all you need.
  2. “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” It has been a long time since the Brewers have had much in the way of an obstacle. Perhaps not coincidentally, they are losing their way a bit in the short term. They seem to be finding an obstacle now, and I think it will serve them well. In fact I think it’s good they’re getting bloodied up a bit now. I’d rather they enter the postseason having already taken a punch and shaken it off than being mentally unprepared for when it inevitably comes. Now they have to actually, you know, shake it off…
  3. Going 45 to 86 has got to be hard on a hitter. I know it’s embarrassing to K, but that’s a sneak tough situation.
  4. Yeah, and how’d that 2019 season end again? I must have missed how being the hottest team in September guarantees you postseason glory. I would have very much liked to have seen our parade.
  5. Me logging in to brewerfan while firing up the broadcast:
  6. I don’t really put a lot of stock in how we get there from here on out. We’ll secure the division soon enough, and likely the #2 seed. Beyond that and good health, not much matters, because the playoffs are a different beast. The sample sizes are small and the results are flukey, I mean, Orlando Arcia is a playoff monster. Craig Counsell has an LCS mvp on his resume. So what is happening right now really doesn’t matter at all. I’ve seen “Craigtember” and it was fun, but it didn’t yield a title. I want the parade, and I’m not seeing anything that tells me that’s impossible.
  7. I think they have to keep playing him. He didn’t give them any reason not to tonight, but even if he goes out next week and takes some lumps, I think it will pay dividends down the line. And call me crazy, but I have a suspicion there will be some lumps to take next week in San Fran…
  8. I think I would have gone for it on 4th and 2 there. I’m kinda over punting in enemy territory in nearly any situation, but what are we worried about up 18?
  9. How does Kansas City ever lose a football game? That entire offense is a cheat code. I know intellectually that they have playmakers at every level, but since I don't watch them very often, every time I actually see them live it is a revelation. Then I remember that half the organization seems to have checkered pasts, to put it charitably, and I would never want Green Bay to make Reed's Faustian bargain, but I would be lying if I didn't sigh inside a little. ANSWER: KC can lose when Lamar Jackson runs wild for an entire half, and KC puts the ball on the turf late.
  10. My impression was that MLF wanted Barry (at least after Leonhard backed out) because he had a good impression of him from their time together in LA. I was (and I guess still am) inclined to trust his judgment on that. I mean, his best friend in the league is Robert Saleh, a great defensive coach, so I figure he has an idea of what good defensive coaching looks like. But, early returns are pretty discouraging to say the least.
  11. RE the Padres discussion, also worth mentioning that, tonight notwithstanding, Darvish has been pretty awful since the new foreign substance restrictions came down. The delicious irony of that, of course, is that Darvish seemed to view himself as a brave upholder of baseball propriety not too long ago…
  12. I’m not sure what is sadder, Yelich’s ABs or JBJ’s obligatory pinch hit appearance. On the one hand, JBJ is just pathetic. I mean, nobody even tries throwing anywhere but right down the middle, and he still can’t do anything with it. With Yelich, though, the sad part is remembering what he used to be not that long ago. When either of them comes up to bat, my feeling of ennui is about the same.
  13. Well at least Cain was able to take second on that. Takes away the traditional double play. EDIT: Nevermind. Yelich is just getting dared to do something. Again.
  14. This is such a new experience for me. I find my self unconsciously clenching my stomach on a night like this as if a loss is devastating, before I remember the standings. It is absolutely surreal.
  15. The NL is going to mess around and give the Cardinals another undeserved playoff berth. It is enough to make one ill.
  16. If I try really hard to give the org a defense of its preseason decisions this year, I would say that the extended regular season would maybe make them want to do everything they can to limit reps when the football is meaningless. Wear and tear is going to be a bigger factor by the end of the year, and playing your best later on is when it counts. But…the results here are pretty damning today.
