  1. Growing up in Illinois (even in the Favre years) makes it easy to hate the Bears, and if you’d have asked me when I was in school what team I hated most, the Bears would have won that hands down, mostly thanks to their fans (and Brian expletive Urlacher). But when I became a man, it was time to put aside childish things, and now the Vikings have their proper place. Honorable mentions go to Seattle and San Francisco. Beating the Cowboys like a rented mule the last decade or so definitely brings down the hate-o-meter on them, I’d also add.
  2. No need to apologize, but we do see this thing differently. I don’t know how we’d ever prove that players and coaches were looking ahead. I mean, it has a logic to it, but we’d never get definitive proof. But what I do know is that what we see on a weekly basis from defensive scheme and personnel is that the way they perform is intentional and the product of deliberate choices stemming from an organizational ethos. Pettine has admitted as much—we want to stop the pass and just pray the run doesn’t kill us. Well, it is murdering our championship aspirations yet again. That is not to discount the other problems this team has, but I do contend that we could address those other things and still lose to a 1-5 Vikings team (especially on a day like this, which becomes more likely the further we get into winter), much less a good team like the 49ers. At this point, I guess we just have to desperately hope we can hold it together to stay in playoff position despite a potentially horrific second-half schedule, and get really lucky by missing the Buccs, 49ers, or even Saints (if the game is in NO) in the playoffs. But this defense does not hang with the Steelers, Ravens, or Titans (and I bet even pass-happy Andy Reid could learn to use Edwards-Hellaire enough to de-pants us) in any potential super bowl match up, so I’m struggling to hold even a glimmer of hope. This is another lost season, and you know what? Gute drafted like it. This is what you get.
  3. Did I say anything to imply that I thought the outcome would be different if he played? I took your comment in the context of the larger discussion to determine why the team lost (and in a fashion that to compare to bovine excrement would be charitable). My point is that not looking ahead to Thursday (and I can’t stress this enough) likely would not have mattered. The defense had all preferred starters in the front seven. Think about that. A year after being road kill in the playoffs in San Francisco (again!), this personnel and scheme on defense is the plan. We can argue about trap games and refereeing and offensive play calls and finding second wide receivers and freaky weather and Rodgers’ body language and MLF’s ability to get the most out of players and so on until the cows come home, but the run defense is fatal. And the whole world knows it now, and there is no indication of any imminent fix.
  4. No, I think they just got exposed. Let's not say things we can't take back in anger. I'm sure they were looking ahead. My own hot take- I think they're keeping guys back that could play in games they think they don't need them in. Davante told us as much earlier this year. I suspect Bakh could have gone today, but they thought they didn't need him... Bakhtiari doesn’t fix the run defense. I have my quibbles about the offense, but it’s a weird weather day taking away the strength of the team in a game that had precious few possessions (and one of those possessions ruined by a horrible PI non-call). But the defense lost that game. Plain and simple. It was another in a long line of emasculating beat-downs in the running game. I’m starting to think the defensive side of the franchise has been full of masochists for the last 19 years. (EDIT: I meant to type 9, but it has sure felt twice as long as that...)
  5. What a joke. We didn’t deserve this game, but the calls have been ludicrously one-sided. This is a one-score game with even competent refereeing.
  6. The 49ers could play backups at every position and run for 350 on this defense. I have tuned in for absolutely every Packer game of my adult life that wasn’t played during work or a wedding or something. Watching Thursday night is the first time I can remember where I’m actually considering breaking that policy.
  7. Not a banner day for special teams. Cmon, boys.
  8. Is that Preston Smith’s first splash play of the season?
  9. I don't get this take. The defense isn't elite, but Rodgers literally threw them 14 points. Now they're down big and the opponent can just go right at their weakness, running the ball with a lead. This game is on #12 if it doesn't turn around. I don’t disagree that Rodgers wears this one to a large extent. But as long as he is here, he is the offense. The pick six was a bad throw, he badly overthrew Lewis and MVS, but the second pick hit Adams in the hands. The running game can’t get going, and the offensive line can’t hold up long enough to allow receivers to get open. Meanwhile, the offense was earning plaudits all season by beating two woeful squads in Atlanta and Minnesota, a thoroughly average one in Detroit, and a crippled one in New Orleans. Tampa Bay represents the only complete team they’ve faced and are now getting whipped in all phases. So yes, I reiterate, my confidence is eroding.
  10. My confidence continues to erode. What kind of defenses will we see in the playoffs? Good ones like Tampa’s. This team has all the makings of another empty 12-win squad that can’t get it done against elite defenses. Same old, same old. It’s just a quarter, sure, but how many times have we seen this script over the last ten years?
  11. I definitely don’t like looking like this against the only good team on the schedule thus far after a bye week of preparation and having the vast majority of preferred starters healthy. That’s fairly alarming.
  12. Dang it. Time to turn in and hope I wake up to news of a miracle. Seeing another season die isn’t worth being exhausted at work one more night. Thanks, Woody, you deserved better.
  13. Little things kill you in elimination games. Ball not dug out at 1B, a pitch half an inch off the plate... now you’re losing.
  14. If he can do 6, do you Hader for 3? I would. The right answer is that you do Hader as long as he can go. But the part that will get CC second-guessed all offseason (again) is when you pull him.
  15. If you intend to live by Orlando Arcia, then you will die by him, too. I hoped we would be living and dying by Yelich, Hiura, and Braun in a game like this, but here we are.
  16. Gyorko not getting anything to fall has been a mild disappointment. I kind of expected him to have a hit or two tonight, but that is probably just my prior association of him with some residual Cardinals voodoo.
  17. I don’t feel good about Freddy, hope I’m wrong, but he hasn’t been good lately. I think he’ll be okay this time around, he got thrown into the game Sunday very abruptly. Of course I could be wrong. Edit: I was wrong. I was hoping you would be right.
  18. Not bringing Yelich in feels like missing the fleeting window. The subsequent arrival of Freddy only adds to the ominousness of the moment.
  19. I'm getting a sense there are maybe a few shades of us not having "earned" those calls, at least from the ump's perspective. I'm reminded of that football game when Cam Newton was getting blasted high and late repeatedly and the head referee basically told him "you don't get those calls yet." Granted, I make no claim to impartiality on these matters.
  20. Can we just tell Arcia that it is always the postseason? He just delivered the president's speech from Independence Day by running into that home run!
  21. So, the good news is, Buehler is only on pace to go about 6 innings, so we only have three more innings of hopelessness on offense before we reset against a bullpen pitcher...or something... So we got that going for us.
  22. Dude, Narvy got three middle-middle fastballs, and couldn't connect on any of them (and didn't even try on the last one). In an offseason full of bad-looking acquisitions, he is probably the one that looks the worst.
