  1. We’ve faced some long odds before. But these are about the longest, and oddest.
  2. I mean, I wanna say they don't ask how you get there...but shouldn't they?
  3. Here's where I'm at with it: If we get in at 29-31, we get the Dodgers. I would love to watch the Brewers stun them in a short series, and make baseball fully come to terms with this cockamamie plan to expand the playoff field. How do they like the idea of the second-biggest market getting bounced by the smallest--when they couldn't even get over .500? That might shut this expansion talk down instantly. Stop screwing with the game, Manfred.
  4. It astounds me that his throws continue to be that bad. I know he had elbow issues at the end of his college career, but I mean, he played the field before that. He has spent years throwing a baseball, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him on that throw. Sometimes it looks like he's a high school football player who got shanghaied into covering a season of baseball by a desperate coach.
  5. Maybe someone on this board can use sabremetrics to make us all feel better about that horrible, non-competitive at-bat by Hiura. Is there an offensive equivalent to the "pitching lab" at Maryvale? Because if anyone needs the kind of offseason Corbin Burnes had last year, it is Hiura.
  6. Alright, Sogard, just dump this thing in front of an outfielder somewhere and keep the train moving. EDIT: nvm, Taylor PH and feeble groundout. On script.
  7. Not that it would have really changed the outcome, but this ump is not covering himself in glory out there.
  8. Some of Williams' worst results this year have come against the Cardinals. He's giving up a .280 batting average and an .880 ops. Freddy, in a slightly smaller sample, had only allowed a .100 batting average and no earned runs. This is not the call you fire someone over. That's also not the kind of sample size you use to make a decision like that. That's nothing but statistical noise. This whole year is statistical noise. The idea that anyone--manager or player--is being meaningfully evaluated under the most bizarre circumstances in baseball history and the shortest season ever is a little hyperbolic. I know I'm arguing against emotional responses in an IGT, and that's on me, but I also tend to operate on the assumption that the people who do this for a living are not incandescently stupid and that there are reasons for their decisions. In fact, those decisions probably aren't even that Williams pitches the 8th forever and ever no matter what. I think the answers to these questions are way more nuanced and interesting, and that is what I want to puzzle out.

  10. I was thinking the same exact thing. Strikeouts here are BIG, and Williams is that guy. Would suck when we need him later, but we have to play this in the moment. An inexcusable mistake. Williams was made for this situation. We needed strikeouts. Peralta was not a horrible choice here. He's got a k/9 of 14.5, so it's not like he's a contact pitcher. I don't mind the questioning of the bullpen decision game, it's good clean fun, but it is not unreasonable to to have expected Peralta to do better in that spot than allowing a billion guys to get on.
  11. Padres have taken a lead in the top of the 4th, another runner in scoring position. Phillies are down 2-0 to the Rays.
  12. Obviously, Anderson coming out unexpectedly means Peralta is coming in cold, which isn't ideal. But considering the stakes and the razor-thin margin for error, it might have been time for a change anyway. This may not be a devastating turn of events. But we need good Freddy.
  13. And so we approach that time of year when we’re reminded yet again that baseball is a veil of tears, one that is unlikely to ever fully lift in our lifetimes. We get but a fleeting glimpse or two of the heavens above, before the shroud descends again. Fall is upon us, and the boys of summer will soon be gone. One, #39, is already gone in body (goodnight, sweet prince), the other, #22, is gone in spirit. We are not long to follow.
  14. Barring an all-time great start by Burnes tomorrow and a Bauer stinker this weekend, yeah, this CY Young race looks just about over. Still an amazing season for Burnes. Great work.
  15. If Cain stayed as close to as hot as he was at the plate to start the year, and he eliminated the need for all the pathetic Peterson at bats, I’d say that’s worth at least 3 wins. Peterson - .346 wOBA, 115 wRC+ Yelich - .347 wOBA, 115 wRC+ Oh, I don’t argue the stats. But the contract (and the MVP pedigree) plays, so if Cain and Garcia take ABs from anybody, it’s Peterson.

  17. Gosh Bauer acts like a toolbag. My goodness, I knew he had a reputation, but I didn’t realize he was that bad. Ugh
