  1. Pina is one of the best catchers in the game. Base runners don't dare run on him. His defense is much more important than Arcia's. What he does offensively is just gravy. Everyone should stop being a hater. Not only is he an invaluable part of this team, you could make an argument he is the team MVP. 53-35 before he went on the DL, 2-8 while is was on the DL, and now 4-3 after coming off the DL. I love Pina's defense, but I HATE his .215 average, .628 OPS, and his 66 OPS+. Upgrading that offensive black hole would be huge. And I'll take Hader, Jeffress, Cain, Yelich, and Aguilar as my MVPs first - imagine this club without any of them.
  2. Ray went 5 for 9 the last 2 games and his average is now up to .265 - just 18 days ago he had bottomed out to a season-low .240 Unfortunately the strikeouts continue to pile up - the only 4 outs he made in those 2 games were via K's.
  3. Nah - he let Khris Davis and Scooter get away, so he sucks - and nothing can ever change that.
  4. Why are you so insistent on adding a vet, let alone Hamels? I don't understand adding a vet just so we can say we have one. He wouldn't be starting a playoff game for us. Maybe this is Doug Melvin's brewerfan.net handle?
  5. Absolutely pessimistic. Not calling the season over, but Soria alone doesn't get more wins than they would have minus Soria, in my opinion. Called the same predictions last season around July 26th. I just feel like this is a .475 club living on borrowed time. I hate feeling that way, but :shrugs: They've still got 5 days to make more deals, and according to all reports, they are seeking to do so. Let's see what they can do before Tuesday - things ain't over yet, not by a longshot.
  6. That's what I thought too when I first saw 'Perez' in the thread title
  7. That was under the Melvin regime - there's a whole new team in place now.
  8. Well, Williams' career-high in wins was also 86.
  9. When Stearns took over in September 2015, many viewed the rebuild as possibly lasting 5 years or longer. He got us back to contending after just ONE down year. We're not even supposed to be where we're at right now! He pulled it off, WAY ahead of schedule. This team has improved their winning percentage each of the last 3 years, and I fully expect that trend to continue next year. I think we're right on the cusp and ready to breakout with some great seasons ahead.
  10. Neither Stearns nor Counsell is on the hotseat, and they aren't going anywhere. But if they were let go, you can bet your life they'd each catch on somewhere else right away.
  11. Hader has been infinitely more valuable in a relief role than he would have been in a starter role this year. There is no way this team is 12 games over .500 right now if he hadn't been in the bullpen all year. How many times has he come in and been lights out? His stats have been up there with the best ever seen by a reliever in MLB history. I mean, just 20 hits allowed in 50 innings, with 93 K's on top of that? Those are insane stats. He's almost always pitching in high leverage situations and has been absolutely brilliant. If he were in the rotation, I'm guessing he probably wouldn't be able to go much past 5 or 6 innings a start max, and of course he'd only pitch every 5 games. With the way the Brewer offense has been this season, I'd just hate to 'waste' his pitching turn if he were to go 5 or 6 innings and leave the game down 2-1 or 1-0 because the offense can't get the bats going. As a reliever though, Counsell can save and deploy Hader for when the situation calls for it - when the game is close or to protect a lead, and that maximizes the overall effect he has on Brewer wins vs losses. Maybe he'll be in the rotation in the future, but as a reliever, this season, he's been the MVP of this team, at least on the pitching side.
  12. Who are the key guys right now? I'd consider the key guys at present (the likely core to stick around for a while) to be Burnes, Hader, Williams, Nottingham, Shaw, Peralta, Cain, Aguilar, and Yelich. Out of that list, only Shaw, Cain, and Aguilar are what I would consider to be in their 'prime' age (28-32). There are also other prospects coming up that should supplement that list in the next year or so (Hiura, Dubon, Houser), and others that could arrive in a couple seasons (Ortiz, Medeiros, Ray). Woodruff and Phillips have a chance of sticking it out as well. Stearns has always maintained that it was his goal to have the Brewers be a perennial contender, year in, year out. I fully expect it to be more than just a 5-year window.
  13. Interesting. If that is current 25-man, it wouldn't include Peralta at 21, nor Braun at 34, though I suspect the two would pretty much cancel each other out. In any event, with all the talent coming up through the minors, the average age of this team should only be getting younger over the next few years.
  14. What do you consider young? 9 members of the current 25-man roster are age 26 or younger, and another 9 are either 27 or 28 years old. Outside of 38-year-old Kratz, no one else is over 32
  15. Wilkerson pitched 7 innings of 2-hit ball against the Cards the final game last season. Hoping we get that Wilkerson today.
  16. I hear Sogard's out of a job right now
  17. Sabathia had 7 CGs for the Brewers after the trade, and that led the NL that year. He had 10 total for the season, which was the most in baseball. Sheets was second in the NL with 5. They rode Sabathia to the playoffs, but he was pretty much out of gas for the postseason. He threw over 100 pitches in 29 of his 35 starts that year, and had over 120 in 4 Milwaukee starts, the pinnacle being the 130 pitch count game vs. Houston, a game which Yost let him finish, despite a 6-1 lead after 5, and an eventual 9-3 win. I remember CC laboring in that 9th inning. The game has definitely changed for all teams in the 10 years since though. It's all about bullpen arms these days, and you're ecstatic if your starter goes 6. Wouldn't surprise me at all for Milwaukee to wind up with a goose egg in the CG column by season's end.
  18. Complete games have become a super-rarity these days, period. There have been only 24 thrown this year in all of baseball, with just 5 in the NL. There are 15 teams that don't have one this year.
