  1. You would think our manager would realize this, but apparently he does not. I don't think you can make a statement like this without knowing the full situation. It could very well be that Stearns believed he could be a guy they make into a multiple outs guy and the only way to prove this would be to use him that way. So while it could be that Counsell is a complete moron, it might also not be the situation. Both Stearns and CC know Claudio is absolutely horrible against RH. This year he allows righties: .323/.382 - 981 OPS! For his career: .314/.352 - .831 OPS against righties. Stearns knew Claudio is not a multiple out or multiple inning type guy. He is the definition of a LOOGY.
  2. Most of his ground balls are to the pull side, but his balls in the air are well distributed including ~half his homers up the middle or opposite field. Source: https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/christian-yelich-592885?stats=career-r-visuals-mlb Thanks for finding and posting the charts. Answers the above questions.
  3. Reed is washed up. in AAA: 5 IPs - 13 hits - 4 HRs. I don't think Stearns wants to waste even one dollar on him. The Brewers want to get their younger guys a chance at AAA.
  4. Thames AB’s have been sporadic, I think with consistent playing time he’ll do better than a powerless, sloth like Aguilar.[/quot Thames isn't going to get anything close to consistent playing time unless Aguilar get hurt. Thames is a strikeout waiting to happen. Last year 40% or the time and so far this year 45% of his ABs have been Ks. I think the Crew is looking to move him in a salary dump.
  5. Thames does have a .393 OBP, but he is whiffing at a 45% rate. I don't see him bringing anything more than a low level prospect.
  6. I think it really depends on how Anderson does. He stunk coming out of the pen early this year. 10 IPs - 11 hits - 5 ERs - 4 BBs. He can be a very effective starter if he can keep the ball in the park. IF he pitches well today it will be a good situation to have for CC.
  7. Broxton's bat will deter most teams looking for help. He is not a bench-type player and needs every-day ABs to be even close to decent. Even in 2017 when he got over 440 ABs he was terrible. .220 BA/.299 OBP. Whiffed 40% of his ABs. He is a good glove that can't hit. I don't think there will be more than two teams even looking at him, and then it will be for a minor lg. contract.
  8. Stokes is not MLB ready. He has just 44 ABs in AAA ball. As of now he is hitting .189 for San Antonio and striking out 1/3 of his ABs. Stokes could be part of the package, but he's not what the Giants would want for immediate help. I don't know if the Crew has what the Giants want for Smith. I don't know if Stearns would give up what the Giants want for a rental.
  9. Do we know his bat to ball skills are elite if he's missing pitches in the zone? Hiura has 5 whiffs in 12 ABs. That is bothersome. He has to show something today and tomorrow to remain in the big leagues. I think another 4 K day gets him sent down and either Dubon or Saladino comes up.
  10. I don’t think I’d use Barnes and High Leverage in the same sentence...unless if it’s for he should never be in them. I'm not sure Anderson automatically goes to the pen. He stunk in the pen so far this year, but thrived as a starter. When Nelson comes back, he might be the pen arm. I'm not so sure on Jeffress as a high leverage arm just yet. His lastest outings haven't been very good even though his velocity looks to be back to normal. Burnes seems to have found a home and Guerra is steady.
  11. I think the dilemma with calling him up has more to do with who gets cut, than Hiura's super 2 status. Shaw can be sent down, and right now he would be the obvious choice. But how will he take the demotion after what he has done for the club the last two years? With Moustakas on a 1 year contract, does Stearns risk alienating a guy the Crew will desperately need in the near future? Perez is too valuable to depart. Gamel too with all of Braun's never ending injuries. Pina is the backup catcher. Without a closer and any defined roles in the pen, CC likes having the security of 13 pitchers. That leaves Thames and Aguilar. Neither one can be sent down w/o losing them to another team. It's a tough choice for Stearns.
  12. I can't see anyway his next start isn't in AAA. They are not in a rush to bring him up with the rotation stabilizing. If he could replace shaw then maybe If Nelson comes back he'd replace one of the 13 pitchers (Houser-Smith-Hart). Shaw is so screwed up now he needs a trip to AAA to get back on track. I don't know if he would balk at the idea, or if Stearns would even consider it. They know he has to do something! Right now he is as easy an out as most pitchers.
  13. I don't think the Giants would take anything close to your deal. Diplan is a throw-in at best. He stunk at A+ last year and is getting killed at AA this year. Henry is a catcher, but he isn't hitting much. Grisham is a no power, lite hitting OF. The Giants wouldn't have much interest in Grisham or Diplan. They would be trading Smith for Henry and would want much, much more.
  14. Absolutely fantastic take! This is THE key to title. We have a good opportunity for a “super pen” at some point this year in my opinion. We could have it now with woody Burnes and peralta to pen, but hurt starting staff too much. Mid-season more realistic with a hopefully healthy jeffress.Brown,Woody,Guerra pitching 2-3 innings, Claudio, Knebel, Hader, Jeffress,Kimbrel. With our line-up and rotation > best team in baseball. Even with-out Kimbrel maybe. Well with Burnes in the pen now, Peralta being groomed for the pen when Anderson back, we are 2 arms closer to the superpen that will win a title. When Nelson is back, another multi-inning arm to the pen, so that will be 3. June 1: Peralta (multi-inning) Anderson (multi-inning) Albers Claudio Jeffress Burnes Guerra Hader With Woodruff and Nelson in the rotation, then later in the year, the crew might want to protect Nelson and Woody’s innings so maybe one or both to the bullpen creating the superpen. Imo, jeffress the key, if he can get close to last year’s jj we’d be unbeatable if we led after 4. Playoffs: Starters- Nelson Gio Chacín Davies Superpen- Peralta Anderson Woodruff Claudio Jeffress Burnes Guerra Hader When Anderson comes back if he continues where he left off, I would start him rather than put him in the pen. He struggled badly in the pen so far this year. 10 IPs - 10 hits - 5 runs w/3 HRs - 4.50 ERA -1.40 WHIP. Nelson would be my choice for a pen arm. I still think they need a closer to be as good as last year. Hader isn't a guy who can close games day after day. Jeffress isn't the same guy this year. Right now they have nobody to fill that role. In a short series a closer is extremely valuable.
  15. Hiura is just destroying AAA pitching right now - if that continues over the next 4-5 weeks it will be very difficult to justify keeping him down there if Shaw doesn't start hitting. Milwaukee is 2nd in the majors to tampa in terms of OPS from the second base position, but that's basically because they have a 3B playing there (Moose). Conversely, they are dead last in the majors in terms of 3B OPS despite getting 8 games-worth of offense from Moose playing that position - Shaw has been terrible. It looks like the Brewers can get decent 1B production from what they have on their roster provided Aguilar keeps rounding into form and Thames gets enough ABs. They'd obviously need to make room on their 40 man for Hiura, but there's plenty of fodder on it currently that could easily be shuffled out to make room for his RH bat in Milwaukee. I don't think it's the 40 man roster that's the concern for Stearns. Who does he let go to accommodate Hiura on the big league club? Gamel is hitting .280/.372 and is proving to be very valuable as the 4th OF. Perez is the back-up at almost every position. Pina is the back-up catcher and Aguilar can't be sent down w/o exposing him to all the other clubs. That leaves Thames and Shaw. I doubt CC would want to sent Shaw down and he needs to keep 13 pitchers. Does Stearns want to lose Thames and eat his contract for Hiura?
  16. If trading Moose only gets a Brett Phillips, please no! Phillips is currently in the minors hitting .186 after a disastious KC stint last year. His days of being a "good" prospect are long gone. Right now he's holding on by a thread. I don't think Grandal would bring nearly as much as you think. Big contract and a FA at the end of the year usually doesn't get much for a catcher. No sense in trading Anderson if he isn't going to bring much in return. Chacin is a maybe, but he isn't good enough to bring a lot because he's a FA in 2020 and would be a rental. You're right about Thames. He would be a salary dump only. Stearns isn't going to trade Hader.
  17. Please don't put much emphasis on something so subjective as DRA. DRA even takes into account someone's opinion of the umpire, the catcher calling the game and framing, temp., someone's opinion of the park, the team's defense, etc.... Because there are far too many variables based on opinion, not fact, DRA is in the eye of the beholder. And by taking all that into account, it does a better job than any publicly available stat out there in predicting future run prevention. Because those things matter, they affect how a pitchers performance translates into preventing runs. Most of what you call "opinion" has a lot of data behind it. In the statcast era, framing isn't a matter of "someone's opinion". Nor is it "someone's opinion" that Marlins Park and Coors Field have an effect on the game. I'm especially intrigued by how temperature is an "opinion". Not to mention that all those things only add up to a small part of the DRA total. It's still about about singles, doubles, HRs, walks, strikeouts etc, all these other things just add context and slightly modify the run values. No stat is perfect, but it's the best we have. Far better than using ERA over a 20 inning sample to make definitive statements. Temp. isnn't an opinion, it's the difference that temp. makes in the game that's an opinion. Parks have an effect on the game, but again, it's an opinion as to the degree of effect a Coors Field compared to a Wrigley with the wind blowing out will have. Or a Padres ball park compared to other parks. ERA cannot be used alone as a determining fact on a pitcher. However it cannot be dismissed either. WHIP is a better factor, but again, cannot be used as a sole factor. Neither is subjective. Look at WAR. Extremely subjective. There are at least three different WAR descriptives out there. All three vary greatly with many of the mid-level players, based on opinion.
  18. Seems like you don't know how the MLB draft works. It is not just losing a 4th round pick it is losing the money associated with that pick. What this means is that the Brewers will have less money to sign their picks. So if the Brewers lose another pick they will have to be more conservative in drafting a player meaning they can't go after a high school player or a junior college player who drops in the draft as they won't have enough in the pool to sign said player. It is not just losing a draft it is losing the slot pool that is associated with the pick that is what will hurt the Brewers. The less slot pool money you have the less you have to give for a signing bonus. This is a MLB sanction that teams can not get around. This is not just a money money money issue it is a futuristic look at the team the team has to keep on bringing in young talent and giving away too many draft picks in one year extremely hurts a team like the Brewers. The pool money would probably have gone to the 4th round pick anyway, so they would have basically the same amount of money for the other picks as they would have if they had a 4th round pick and signed him. I too believe it's all about how much money Kimbrel wants and the length of contract he is willing to accept.
  19. Lewis hitting .219/.318 at A+ right now. 2nd year at A+ and he continues to struggle. Highly questionable right now. Kiriloff is a good looking OF prospect currently just moved up to AA. Graterol is really doing well, but again, just started at AA. To give away one of the top relievers in the game plus others, Stearns is going to want people closer to MLB ready.
  20. He's not bad, just a little guy(5'8) and doesn't get a lot of K's, injury history... We could certainly do worse. Stroman was really bad last year, but is pitching well this year despite his 1-4 record. The sticking point is the asking price of the Bluejays.
  21. Please don't put much emphasis on something so subjective as DRA. 22. Let's hope he is the real deal. CC needs a closer now! Getting worried big time about Hader. He's now allowed 4 HRs in his last 5 appearances. Brewer pitchers as a whole allow far too many HRs, but you cannot have your closer and best pen arm getting lit up like that.
  23. Everybody would be ecstatic if Arcia could continue to hit in the .260s with a near or better .320 OBP. His glove is a difference maker and to get that type of offensive production from him would be fantastic.
  24. Absolutely nothing lost by letting Fields go. I'm really interested in how Perdomo will do now that he got moved to AAA from Biloxi.
  25. Moose offers a bit more positional versatility - handling 2b pretty well this year, plays third base, and has some experience at first. Thames is really a 1B/DH who can play a corner OF spot in theory... Honestly, I'd exercise Moose's option, and have him learn to play LF/RF in spring training 2020. That just does not make sense. He's not a good enough hitter to warrant a corner OF spot before you take into account that he'd likely be awful defensively out there. And while I know you have....lets just say unique opinions on where we should play people, preventing runs is pretty important. I see no reason to put a .300 OBP bat out in LF or RF. I'd feel more confident pocketing 10-12 million and going with Corey Ray or Tyrone Taylor as Braun's backup or as the starter and then if necessary finding someone in the season to play there. That's not difficult. Corner OF's are probably just about the easiest part of your team to acquire. Taylor is looking good at AAA right now; .309/.371 with an .889 OPS. They are trying to get him to take more walks, but he will deserve a real look soon. Ray is playing his way out of the picture and probably going to be sent back to AA once he gets off the IL. Hitting .170/.250 with 24 Ks in only 52 ABs he is over matched and struggling again. Currently Gamel is doing a pretty good job for CC as Braun's replacement. .265/.379 is not bad for a backup OF. His whiffs are a concern, but he has done well in clutch situations and plays a much better defense than Braun.
