  1. Yeah, I think we've been brainwashed into thinking Arcia's a better defender than he is. He definitely passes the eye test well, but I think we just don't realize that there are a ton of really good defenders playing shortstop in the league, so he actually grades out closer to the middle of the pack in that regard. Then add in how dreadful he's been at the plate (2nd to last out of 34 shortstops with at least 1000 ABs the past three years in both WAR and wRC+, he's also 2nd to last in slugging so I'm not sure the "having some pop" argument holds up either) and I just don't see much of a market for him. The Urias injury may give him one final chance to show something here, but otherwise I think his ship has sailed with the Urias/Sogard acquisitions.

  3. Arcia really does look like the odd man out if he doesn't markedly improve this year. But otherwise, the matchup game is going to be fun to watch and the three batter minimum rule is going to make it really difficult for an opposing manager to bring in an opposite hand reliever without it exploding in his face. There's going to be a lot of thump coming off the bench that we can stack up against them if they dare. Two year wRC+ splits: Starters vs RHP (vs RHP splits) 3B Holt* (115) 2B Hiura (159) LF Yelich* (180) 1B Smoak^ (123) RF Braun/Garcia (101/100) C Narvaez* (127) CF Cain/Gamel* (94/90) SS Sogard* (88) Bench (LHP splits/RHP splits) C Pina (101/79) IF Urias (154/55) IF Arcia (70/54) IF Gyorko (113/89) OF Braun (131/101) / Garcia (111/100) OF Cain (128/94) / Gamel* (120/90) ------------------------------------- Starters vs LHP (vs LHP splits) CF Cain (128) 2B Hiura (74) LF Yelich* (148) 1B Braun (131) RF Garcia (111) 3B Sogard*/Gyorko (114/113) SS Urias (154) C Pina (101) Bench (RHP splits/LHP splits) C Narvaez* (127/92) IF Sogard* (88/114) / Gyorko (89/113) IF Arcia (54/70) IF Holt* (115/76) IF Smoak^ (123/88) OF Gamel* (90/120)

  5. If you want see some surprising splits, take a look at the two year comparisons of Sogard/Gyorko/Holt vs Moustakas/Shaw/Perez: 2018-19 vs RHP: 2018-19 vs LHP:
  6. Three year splits for reference 2017-19 vs RHP: 2017-19 vs LHP: Although looks like his splits are even bigger if you only take the past two seasons... 2018-19 vs RHP: 2018-19 vs LHP: Either way, he looks like a good compliment to Gyork-gard.
  7. Great comment exchange here
  8. My impression is we've got a good ole' Spring Training competition for those starter spots. They'll all start off the spring getting stretched out as starters and the brass will decide as the games are played who remains in the rotation, who moves to the bullpen as guys that can go two innings at a time, and who stays stretched out in AAA. To complicate things further, they technically don't need a 5th starter until April 14th. So it may be a competition among those 4 guys (and maybe even a long shot for Shelby Miller) for just that 4th spot initially. Should be fun to follow!
  9. I like the new logo. I think it's clean and professional looking and, as someone who works with graphic designers and has seen the show Mad Men, lol, I actually buy the possibility that they intentionally connected the M and B as a symbol of connecting the city to the team. It definitely doesn't bother me anyways. I could get on board with rounding off the right side of the glove though, but again, not a huge deal to me. As for the old logo's baseball, I always thought it was cool that they used a nontraditional angle of the ball. As a kid I'd always turn the ball to try to mimic that look. It's a specific angle and it's exaggerated and cartoony in the logo (as is the rest of the glove, being it's a logo and all), but it definitely mimics the look of a real baseball:
  10. So does that mean if you're down 7-0 in the top of the 8th, bring in a position player to end the inning, score a run to make it 7-1 going into the 9th, you're then *forced* to take out the position player and bring in a designated pitcher to pitch the 9th?
  11. Just for some reference, here are the teams the past 5 years that didn't make the playoffs but would have with 14 playoff teams: 2019 AL: Indians (93-69), Red Sox (84-78) 2019 NL: Mets (86-76), Diamondback (85-77) 2018 AL: Rays (90-72), Mariners (89-73) 2018 NL: Cardinals (88-74), Pirates (82-79) 2017 AL: Royals (80-82), Angels (80-82) 2017 NL: Brewers (86-76), Cardinals (83-79) 2016 AL: Tigers (86-75), Mariners (86-76) 2016 NL: Cardinals (86-76), Marlins (79-82) 2015 AL: Angels (85-77), Twins (83-79) 2015 NL: Giants (84-78), Nationals (83-79)
  12. Count me in 3 year splits as SP:
  13. The platoon starter/bench situation gets pretty interesting with the three batter minimum rule as well: vs RH Starter - If you've got Joc starting and Avi on the bench, as soon as they bring in a lefty to face Joc you can bring in Avi/Braun (or even one after the other) to face the lefty without them double switching on you vs LH Starter - With Joc on the bench you can wait for a righty reliever to come into the game and PH hit him in the next three batters without worrying about them switching it to a lefty on him It'll be interesting to see how managers maneuver around facing these types of platoon situations this year
  14. I was going to move this to the Pederson discussion in the Stripling thread, but thought just creating a new thread was probably more appropriate. A Joc/Avi platoon gives you a lot of oomph if you can fit it onto the roster... 3 Year Splits vs. RHP: 3 Year Splits vs. LHP: And since it seems like Braun would need to be moved into a First Base role even further, here's what we'd have there: 3 Year Splits vs. RHP: 3 Year Splits vs. LHP:
  15. You can also note that the 3 batter rule might be a big benefit when Joc's on the bench vs a lefty starter and a righty reliever is brought into the game.

  17. I'm not super knowledgeable of Williams, but this makes me feel good about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6VrALOYM4I
  18. So that basically means it's a 5 year / $181M extension for his age 31-35 years. $36.2M per year is a lot for Milwaukee especially for a player on the wrong side of 30, but it's still on the verge of tempting at that price and years. Conversely, no way Yelich takes that and then becomes a free agent again at age 36. He's going to break bank on a deal that takes him through the majority of his 30s. Nothing's going to beat the 3 year / $41.5M deal we have him on right now through his prime years. And if you make that 2 years / $26.5M plus whatever another team is willing to unload for that final year, I don't think you're going to have a better outcome. Stearns hit the lottery when he got Yelich for the cost/contract/years/age he got him and that all goes away once he hits 31 and starts making $35M+ per year.
  19. I would rather focus on getting the next 26-30 year old "Yelich", than sign Yelich to an extension that basically gets you a new 31-37 year old Ryan Braun at twice the amount we're paying 31-37 year old Ryan Braun right now. Unless you think Braun's unmovable contract the past few years has been an advantage to the team, I don't understand the want to unnecessarily extend an amazing Yelich contract into what will basically be what we're getting from Braun but will necessitate a ton more money and likely go even further into the decline of his career. If you can get a boatload of talent back for Yelich with one year remaining on his contract, you have to do it. Let some other team overpay for what Yelich did in the past with the Brewers.
  20. Brian Anderson's doing the Bucks game on TNT right now. Bucks have been fun. I'm ready for baseball.
  21. Well it's definitely going to be an interesting division next year! Tons of questions marks with both the Cubs and Cardinals doing practically nothing while losing a few pieces, the Brewers overturning so much of the roster, and the Reds adding so much.
  22. Uh oh... From @JRRadcliffe:
  23. I will thank you now. This site looks awesome! A couple questions: Any suggestions on sizing (do they run smaller than usual or anything)? Have you ordered anything with a custom name on it? Do you just put it in the notes during checkout?
  24. I'm not sure they were looking to bring him back, but happy to see another bat escape the Cards. They're down Ozuna and Martinez now and really haven't picked up anything anywhere yet. If they don't grab Castellanos or swing a deal for Arenado, they could be taking a nice little step back. Same can be said for the sCrubs. That with the improved Reds, this division could be pretty tight next year.
  25. Yeah while I'm sure the fan in me would be happy hearing about an extension I really don't think we *should* want one. We got Yelich on the absolute perfect deal for exactly the years you want him. If we sign him to an extension, you're getting him for a bunch of years that are past his prime for a ton more money. It's basically the same thing as taking the Albert Pujols deal from the Angels. Yes the guy was amazing in his prime, but having that contract soured really quickly, and for a team like Milwaukee could be debilitating.
