  1. I will say this, I know that writer and he is definitely not your typical big market, East coast bias type guy (he's an O's fan living in the Midwest). He's a nice, goofy dude who produces the ZiPS projection system. I don't get this proposal either though and would be interested to hear if he had any explanation along with that proposal in that article. I'll make sure to pick his brain on this one next time I see him
  2. That said, with all the mediocre pitching names being thrown around, if the Crew does strike a trade for a starter, Gray's pretty much the only guy out there that is a significant upgrade to the rotation. If Stearns can figure out a deal that minimizes the talent thrown back to the A's, he could be a real good pickup for the next 2 1/2 years. Keep emphasizing those legitimate injury concerns and get him for a deal David!
  3. From that link: Great to hear. Hold strong Stearns!
  4. "Zero" reason not to look into it, but he probably isn't a significant upgrade to the rotation and whether or not you acquire him is completely dependent on what it costs. His 4.38 FIP this year is his lowest since 2013 and it's still higher than Nelson's (3.20), Anderson's (3.45), Garza's (3.45), and Suter's (2.88) this year. Additionally, Guerra and Davies are coming off years of 3.70 and 3.89 FIPs respectively, which are both better years than Straily's ever had. Not to mention our major league ready prospects that could step in, like Hader and Woodruff. FIP isn't everything, but it tends to be more predictive than ERA moving forward and just wanted to point out that there are "some reasons" you may not try to acquire him if the price is too high. That said, if he can be had for insignificant pieces, he's valuable from a low salary, controllable, league average starter, standpoint, I just don't think he's good enough to overpay for.
  5. Bumping this thread as the "unexpected" basically happened just as outlined in the original post. It's a fun read and interesting to see what the preseason consensus was compared to some of the talk going around now. If Stearns sticks to his guns and doesn't overpay for anyone, I think pre-season BF.net will be happy.
  6. This explains the option the other way around, that it's $5m to keep him, or $1m to keep him if he spends more than 130 days on the DL. Lots of conflicting info about it. https://www.brewcrewball.com/2017/2/14/14607306/matt-garza-contract-option-2018-explained
  7. Maybe they have other targets that are not rental types? We could have done both.... rental and whatever. Maybe we still will. At these prices, why not? They probably just don't like him much and don't think it's worth the roster spot to give up something for him. We've got the following starters performing well this year: Nelson (3.43 ERA), Anderson (2.89, could return next month), Garza (3.83), Suter (2.84), plus Guerra and Davies who we expected to pitch much better, plus other high potential internal options like Hader and Woodruff. So Garcia with his 4.30 ERA (and last year's 4.67 ERA) seems like getting someone just to get someone. They're likely targeting guys with more impact potential that can help beyond this season.
  8. Seems like there's a few of us roaming around these boards. Just curious who else is here, if you have any favorite places to catch Brewer games out here, and if there's any interest in getting a group together sometime to watch an O's game in Camden Yards or a Brewer game at a local watering hole? I've been out here 7 years now, live in Hampden, and tend to just watch games on MLB.TV at home, but would love to have a go to place to catch a game "out in the wild". I'm sure if we had a couple of us somewhere, most places would be cool with switching on the game for us if they have a baseball package. Not a lot of sports bar options in Hampden, but the Five and Dime, Fraziers, and the Hon Bar are probably the best bets to get a game here. Heading downtown, I've watched Packer games at Max's Taphouse before, so that may be an option. Otherwise, there's a few Greene Turtle/Bill Batemans/BW3's around too. Love to hear if anyone else has some good go-to's!
  9. Awesome, cool town, I'm in Hampden. I'll start a thread in the Off-Topic forum to avoid high-jacking the game thread further and see if any other Baltimore folks on here are interested in getting something together. Let's go Brewers!
  10. I'm in Baltimore too, wish I could make it out to the game but I'm stuck working overtime this weekend. MDCrew, I take it you live in Maryland too, hence the MD? Seems like there's a few of us out this way. If the Crew keeps this up, we might need to pick a good bar for Brewerfan'ers to watch the playoff push from the rest of the season!
  11. I'm curious about this too. I thought it was stupid at first, but it's turned into something that looks so dumb it's funny, lol. Love seeing all the chemistry with this team! The slow overhead clapping, the homerun gauntlet, etc., reminds me of the fun the Fielder teams had.
  12. That's awesome, good for him! Going from stuck in the minors behind a couple guys in one organization one day to being in the starting lineup for the Yankees against the Red Sox the next. Super happy for him, hope it's the start of a nice MLB career!
  13. I'd argue that's more of a statement on how ridiculous the reliever trade market has been. The Quintana deal seems fair. In addition to getting a top 10 prospect in all of baseball, they got a very good starting pitching prospect that hits triple digits on the radar. In theory, a good trade should swap services now for services later. The pitcher alone has the potential to do that, throw in one of the best hitting prospects in all of baseball and you've got 3.5 years of Quintana for a decent shot of 12 years of Jimenez and Cease. Throw in the two high A players (a shortstop hitting .305 this year, and a corner infielder with 31 homers over the past year and a half) and this looks like a good haul for a good player. The reliever deals are just on another planet right now. I don't think you can compare anything reasonable to those.
  14. White Sox now have 3 of the top 11 prospects in baseball (according to MLB). No other team has more than 1 in the top 13. Not bad. Not to mention 6 of the top 36 prospects and 9 of the top 68 prospects. While prospect rankings are pretty suspect, they're valuing higher ranked guys over quantity and not many teams could have given up a bigger individual prospect than Eloy.
  15. That looked like it was written plugging keywords into one of those instant online essay generators. Holy cow.
  16. Of course if the Brewers also throw in Chase Anderson and Isan Diaz I would assume they could net Jean Segura? Pretty sure they'd have to throw in Aaron Wilkerson and Wendell Rijo as well in order to get Segura back.
  17. 2014 Giants, 2011 Cardinals, 2006 Cardinals, and 2000 Yankees all won with the worst record heading into the playoffs.
  18. The Cubs only have one All-Star as well.
  19. Living in Baltimore and listening to the local sports talk radio, they know their biggest ongoing organizational problem is pitching, they consider Bundy their best pitcher right now, and I'd be very surprised to see them deal him. He's had a few rough starts this month, but he was pitching like an ace to start the season. If they continue to struggle, they may, and should, sell off some pieces, but I don't think Bundy will be one of them. All that said, considering their history, I probably shouldn't be surprised if they actually did that, lol.
  20. With this morning's report that the Brewers are preparing for the possibility of adding a Quintana/Gray-type starting pitcher, what do you foresee the starting rotation looking like after the trade deadline? All the guys in the rotation are either doing well/holding their own or are expected to be better than they have been, so who's out and who takes their place? I could see them doing pretty much nothing and keeping a rotation of Nelson, Anderson, Davies, Guerra, Garza, but I'll take a crack at something more interesting: - Trade Ray, Ortiz, Phillips, + nugget for Quintana - Garza continues to pitch well and they flip him for a bullpen arm (not closer, not setup, but "Barnes"/3rd guy up type) - Send Guerra down to the minors to get straightened out - Anderson and Woodruff come back from the DL August 1st rotation: Quintana, Nelson, Anderson, Davies, Woodruff
  21. Really depends on who they have to give up, but at least with those two guys you're getting them for multiple years beyond 2017 so I can get behind that. But you know there would be a couple guys involved that will hurt to see go. Nervously excited!
  22. A win today guarantees we're still in first place through the All-Star break too. It will feel a lot better sitting with that through the off days than to let it slip away just beforehand.
  23. I was also thinking about this last night. An additional small advantage of having played more games than the other teams is that teams like the Cubs have three additional games they have to either play during a doubleheader or on what would otherwise be a day off. So the Brewers have a little extra rest here and there than their competition to get through the end of the long summer. Certainly doesn't hurt.
  24. Exactly the same for me. That's great that we have a couple of adults on these forums. Question: Do either of you have families that you buy nice seats for? For starters, nice seats are anything lower than the Terrace Level and not in the Bleachers, IMO. I just checked the cheapest "nice seats" for an upcoming series against the last place Phillies. Loge outfield box= $40 each. Family of Four with ticket fees and parking would cost about $200. If you add in a meal or other in-game expenses your are talking about $300 to take a family of four to a Brewers game and sit in "nice seats". I personally really like the Terrace Box seats for $25. They're $15 less than what you consider the threshold for "nice seats". I plan ahead, get front row seats in the upperdeck, have a great view of the whole park with no one sitting in front of me and in your situation you can save $60 on your tickets that way.
