  1. OF Noah Campbell's on the minor league call-up list today, which I believe is the first sign we've gotten that he's healthy. Yay! 3B Luke Adams and OF Eduarqui Fernandez are also up for a day.
  2. I’m sure we’d play him regularly if he’s hitting like we know he can. The main decision would be whether we go with Frelick in RF (Mitchell in CF) against righties OR shift Mitchell’s stronger arm to RF.
  3. This is not looking likely, but the Prospect Promotion Incentive would be enough for me to put Frelick on the Opening Day roster, knowing we’d option him for 2 weeks at some point in the season to gain the extra year of control.
  4. FanGraphs’ Roster Resource page for the Brewers now projects Owen Miller on the Opening Day roster, Tyler Naquin out. They also still have Gus Varland and Jake Cousins as the odd men out in the bullpen. It’ll be interesting how they react if/when Luke Voit’s contract is selected later this week.
  5. I don't envy you writing up the infield skill positions (2B, 3B, SS), given the vast number of decent players to consider. Speed skater Eddy Alvarez has mainly played second base in MLB Spring Training games, but he'll be battling for playing time with the likes of Miller, VanMeter, Toro and Monasterio. Tyler Black and Felix Valerio should ordinarily get 99% of the starts in AA, but we've also got Isaac Collins looking for some playing time. Then there's Ethan Murray, who logged 237.1 innings at second base last season. And of course, Eric Brown Jr. and Eduardo Garcia can't play shortstop at the same time. Finally, what is Dylan O'Rae's natural position? It's a pretty fortunate situation that the organization finds itself in, I must say.
  6. I agree it’s unlikely, but McGee and Lamet both got claimed and thus saved us money. If Hiura gets claimed, we save money. If he generates special interest, we save money and net a prospect. If he clears waivers, we outright him to AAA and keep paying him $2.2m, like we did with Lindblom.
  7. Future All-Star Sal Frelick will be a fun addition to the team:
  8. Maybe because yesterday was a relatively good day for him: one single…accompanied by a strikeout and fly out; plus a throwing error in the field. We may cut our losses, DFA’ing him to save money, like we did with Lamet and McGee last season. It’s not likely, but I don’t believe it’s out of the realm of possibility. If there’s enough of a market for him, the DFA would lead to a trade for a prospect.
  9. Thank you for the first base overview. Most eyes appear to be on the Hiura/Voit decision, which could break many different ways. Big bat Ernesto Martinez is actually the only Brewers AA-level (expected) position player (other than Darrien Miller, who had a long Winter Ball season) who’s yet to be invited to participate in an MLB Spring Training game thus far. I hope he’s healthy! I also think it’s worth noting that Zavier Warren mainly played first base in the Arizona Fall League and that’s where he’s been getting some action when invited into MLB Spring Training games. Finally, Tayden Hall should see time at first base in Carolina when not catching or DH’ing.
  10. Gotta love when a guy (Elian Miranda) who was released after hitting .130 in High-A ball last year hits a game-tying homer off the Cubs’ $25 million SP-1 (Marcus Stroman). Baseball is back!
  11. Pulling for Knarr. He and Seminaris will hopefully be a ridiculous combo in Biloxi and Nashville this year, then Nashville and Milwaukee in 2024.
  12. Wood’s 8 days older than Miller and was paid a $347,500 signing bonus last year, so yeah, I think we could see him commence at High-A. But that’s probably dependent on Miller or Quero starting at AA Biloxi, as all three need to catch regularly.
  13. Thanks for this. You’ve probably got the #1’s correct: AAA Henry, AA Miller, High-A Quero, Low-A Wood. I’ll keep holding out hope, though, that they let Miller (defense) and Quero (offense) work on skills development in High-A Wisconsin to start the year. They’re just 22 and 20 years old and High-A’s not exactly a cakewalk, as we saw for some prospects last year. That would allow the old timers (Brent Diaz, Jason Lopez, Nick Kahle) and Wes Clarke to get more early season action at AA Biloxi, so we certainly wouldn’t be short of players. 6’4”, 20-year old Tayden Hall is our latest convert-to-catcher experiment, but I guess most figure it’ll go the same way Thomas Dillard’s went. I hope it works out though. Lastly, let’s not sleep on Satchell Norman - 20 years old, $125k signing bonus last year, .854 OPS in limited time. The only position he played was catcher in the 7 times he saw the field for ACL Brewers Gold last year.
  14. Undrafted 6’6”, 19-year old LHH right fielder Reece Walling had the honor of an invite to the big league camp game today. I’m imagining he won a bet against an assistant coach. 🤷‍♂️
  15. Shoulder soreness for Naquin. Supposedly nothing to worry about it.
  16. Rockies get LHP Brad Hand. Headlines are saying $2m deal, but it looks like he gets another $1m if he makes the opening day roster. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/03/rockies-to-sign-brad-hand.html
  17. Thanks for the blog on minor leaguers! If it’s possible, twin tower high schoolers Luke Adams and Quinton Low may be interesting players to spotlight.
  18. Quite a deal for the Rangers, in my opinion:
  19. I believe the team just needs to prevent him from being on the MLB roster for 172 days, which means we can add him on April 14th...well, unless the regular season gets extended for an extra day or two. If we keep him down longer than that, then I think we're getting into deeper manipulation to try to prevent him from being a Super Two player that will ultimately make more money in arbitration (but not affect the first year of free agency). We did this type of manipulation with Ryan Braun and Keston Hiura, I believe.
  20. Assuming Frelick is not on the Opening Day roster, can someone please go to the ballpark with a #BetterCallSal sign every day until he's called up? I'd pay to see that.
  21. I’m still a bit annoyed about last year, when we played McCutchen/Hiura down the stretch instead of allowing Frelick and his 41-game on-base streak (.364 / .436 / .515) to nudge us into the playoffs. But that’ll just be part of 2014/2022 mistake lore. I hope our intention is just to keep Frelick down for 15 days. I believe that he can join the MLB squad on April 14th in San Diego and not accrue 172 service days, thus delaying his free agency by a year. While we can argue that we NEED Frelick on the OD roster, especially with Taylor out, the reality is that Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta/Adames/Yelich/D. Williams should carry us, Naquin has a proven arm (96mph) for right field, and Mitchell is a better center fielder than Frelick. Promoting Frelick too early, with the intent to option him for 15 days for service time manipulation, could blow up in our face later (e.g. angry players and fans; long-term injury while he still accrues service time; hitting struggles which necessitate burning his first option year). So April 14th. That’s the day. Unless I’m misunderstanding something fundamentally important.
  22. I’ve not seen any official announcement of the minor league camp schedule - report date, first full practice, first games, etc. A Cardinals’ news article said their own start date is March 5th.
  23. By my count, 68 players who are not on the Brewers' 40-man MLB roster have been called up to be part of MLB spring training games over the first 4 days (5 games), including non-roster invitees who are part of the MLB camp (e.g. Skye Bolt) and younger players from the Minor League camp (e.g. Hedbert Perez). I think we all agree this is Awesome to see! Of course, it's natural to wonder which other players would normally also benefit from this honor who haven't - e.g. Are they in camp? Dealing with an injury? Here's my list: OF Tristen Lutz - 24 years old, .796 OPS in AA Biloxi last year OF Jackson Chourio - almost 19 - greatest Brewer prospect since Gary Sheffield (my opinion) OF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 22 - injured while playing in High-A on May 29, 2022 OF/INF Noah Campbell - 23 - injured while playing in AA on July 29, 2022 RHP Justin Bullock - 23 - injured while playing in High-A on August 7, 2022 RHP Ryan Middendorf - 25 - 2.76 ERA in 29.1 IP in Low-A/High-A/AA last year LHP Luis Amaya - 24 - signed as MILB free agent - 3.33 ERA in 46.0 IP in High-A last year 1B/C Wes Clarke - 23 - .774 OPS in High-A/AA last year INF Ethan Murray - 22 - .644 OPS in High-A/AA last year 1B Ernesto Martinez - 23 - .792 OPS in High-A last year C Jason Lopez - almost 25 - .599 OPS in AA last year RHP Max Lazar - 23 - probably resting after throwing 46 innings in Australia RHP Arnaldo Hernandez - probably resting after Winter Ball extended to January 30
  24. I hope they prove me wrong. He's seemed like such an obvious DFA-and-outright candidate - lacking velocity, results and options.
  25. RHH Owen Miller’s a 2B/1B/3B - the pride of Ozaukee High School. He’s on the 40-man MLB roster. 2B/LF/3B Josh Van Meter (LHH) and CF Skye Bolt (switch-hitter) are non-roster invitees who’ve struggled to hit in their MLB time.
