  1. Forget about Duke-UNC...the other game I care about tomorrow is the Argentina-France friendly!
  2. I'd put odds down that he's aware of these things because he's a collector who keeps up on the market he wheels and deals in. Ten posts and they're all upset at the Brewers and Braun because he was given an autograph that has low resale value. That said, I don't care about autographs one whit (and if I did, I'd want something personalized, personally) but I do think if you've paid that much and waited that long, you should be able to get a non-personalized autograph if you want.
  3. To be honest, I had no idea Looper pitched as well as that last year (I'd been a little fixated on bringing Big Ben back!)...I'll be surprised if he repeats it, but I'll take even an ERA under 5 this season from our #5 starter. And he's not got a bad bat, either...not as much power as CC, but he hits for average better!
  4. I don't know about being ridiculously excited--I don't think Braden Looper is the puzzle piece that makes this a World Series team--but I am definitely happy to see McClung in the pen and the Brew Crew with some more back-end pitching depth, and think we have a fighting chance to stay in the playoff race long enough to make a splash move similar to last year with CC (if not as large).
  5. I'm definitely not excited about it, and I don't think anyone here is...I just pointed it out since people are complaining that Sheets will be "costing the team money" this season with this surgery when this crummy development will actually likely save them some bones this year, for better or for worse
  6. If it makes you feel better, I'm still spending cash like a drunken sailor And actually, that's something that's bugging me.
  7. Everyone's making cracks about the "Evil Empire," etc (and don't get me wrong, I'm no Yankees fan), but to be fair, this happened when A-Rod was a Ranger. Glad DM wasn't in Texas at that point.
  8. "A bunch," huh? Will this >$50K or so in surgery money be the impediment to the Brew Crew adding Halladay or the like this June? I mean, I know you're just looking for reasons to pile on Sheets, but really, by being injured (which I'm sure he desires deeply, this having been his primary shot at a huge payday for him and his wife and children--but oh, he just hates the Brewers and their fans so much he wanted to stick it to us!), Big Ben probably saved the team money this season by them not having to dole out bonus money for the supplemental pick for him (cold comfort obviously, but the truth, if you're gonna complain about the surgery cost), and certainly saved them money by not signing the arbitration offered him by the Brewers (no Hoffman, no Prince arby deal).
  9. Yeah, they start haggling over money for surgery and it starts reeking of an unpleasant divorce.
  10. A pretty interesting read, for what it's worth: http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._Baseball_retired_numbers Worth noting that Mollie never ended up on Toronto's "Circle of Excellence," despite a few very solid seasons (two All-Star appearances, Silver Slugger awards, a World Series MVP). I guess three seasons are just too few, for now at least. Also, the Nationals imported none of the Expos' retired numbers, and as of yet, haven't retired Gary Carter, say, as a National. The more I think of it, the more ridiculous it was that the Atlanta Braves retired Spahn's number...I mean, did Spahn give a speech to the Atlanta fans when they did it?
  11. Pretty cool; I've always assumed that many in the organization took a look relatively often, including many of the players, especially the younger ones. They're only human...curiosity killed the cat, but I suppose satsifaction brought him back in many cases (does 3TO's mother even love him as much as the brewerfan peanut gallery?).
  12. Are there any plans for regional events? I'd love to meet up with any Brewers' fans here in the Bay Area/NorCal, and I know there are a few of us. I can make plans if anyone's interested.
  13. I think Bikeage and Invader3K have nailed it...the Walk of Fame and Milwaukee Braves' areas at MP are appropriate tributes...we can't really retire Spahn and Matthews' numbers since they didn't play as Brewers. I suppose it would be cool to have a general "Milwaukee Braves" medallion up by Ueck's up on the far back wall, denoting the HOF Braves that spent their career in Milwaukee and all the titles won in Milwaukee. I'm also oddly defensive of Aaron's Milwaukee connection, strange considering I was born in 1975!
  14. That is correct...Ben Sheets' legacy here will be some pretty good memories and a few bad ones
  15. It's littered with that because, as ennder said, no one knew at the time the extent of the injury, including, apparently, DM, who offered him $12m arbitration for this season (of which he'll miss half in a best case scenario). Even now, a couple of us don't think it would be the worst move ever if they could somehow lock him up for 2-3 years with a low-money, low-risk, high incentive deal--and it's not like it's only Brewers' fans suggesting this, either. At the right price, I'd take some more mileage in late '09 and '10 from a Ben Sheets even at 75%, since we're not going to get any picks from his departure now.
  16. I wasn't too far off on my Vernon County joke, apparently.
  17. Billy Redden http://www.rogerwendell.com/images/music/billy_redden_in_the_1972_movie_deliverance.jpg
  18. A lot of the NSBB guys are interested in him as a reclamation a la Dempster, although some are wary of the results of the surgery (and potential others), some are wary of giving up the draft pick: http://www.northsidebaseb...viewtopic.php?f=6&t=52909 I can imagine that a few clubs with money would be considering the same--or at least their fans!
  19. Or Fingers, although he had some of his best seasons here. I guess I'll just usually think of him as an A.
  20. 2yr/$15M...I would say you've already lost it....2/15 was way high, yes, and yeah, it was most likely informed by the strong service that Big Ben often gave the Brewers (imagine). That said, I don't think it would be the worst idea in the world to try and lock him up now for 2-3 years (i.e., one or two seasons of actual pitching) at a low-priced, high-incentive contract. Unfortunately, the Brewers don't have the money to try and take those risks.
  21. I mean, how long is he out? Since the team is going to end up paying for the surgery anyway, and most likely won't get any draft picks at this point, would a 2 yr/$15M deal be absolutely insane? Am I losing it?
  22. He looks a bit like a low-rent Kinky Friedman. Is he a musician?
  23. It really is a crummy situation all the way around for everyone involved. Sad, even. This is Ben's prime. Beyond this, weren't the team doctors the one who initially said Yo was OK after his collison in Chicago last year, not just to pitch, but after the game as well?
