  1. Go ahead, get your licks in, fellas: poor Ripon and Carroll don't even make the standard US World News and Report top list
  2. SF- Did you go to Beloit? Yeah, class of '99. I believe Brewers19 did, too. If only we'd rated our professors higher on an unscientific online website, we might be considered a better school than "Wisconsin Lutheran," right?
  3. Interesting methodology, although I'd question how much of "What are the chances I will graduate in four years?" is the school's responsibility. Ultimately, I think it's a bit of a farce to try and rank schools like this, for a variety of reasons, but mostly since what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander. Where you go to secondary school is a really personal decision and these aren't one size fits all. (Beloit College #196 woo hoooo!)
  4. As someone who works for an entertainment union, I can tell you that things like Hulu are really crummy for the actual creatives involved with making the show, from the writers to the actors to the directors. The producers are still making bank with all that ad money on older shows like Remington Steele and even newer shows like Firefly from Hulu, but the actors, etc. aren't seeing dime one. The producers claim these are "promotions," not actual shows, and as such they don't pay re-use fees (ie. residuals/royalties) on them. It's a pretty gross situation. Things are a little better with the recent negotiations, but still not where they should be. If you're gonna watch this stuff, take it off torrent sites. Yeah, the creatives still won't get paid for that use, but the producers won't be lining their pockets with others' work, ether.
  5. I don't know, when I lived in Chicago I'd wear my Brewers hat anywhere/everywhere. This guy just sounds like he'd be a boor wherever he lived and whatever team he roots for.
  6. The way boxing matches are scored have changed since the '84 and '88 debacles...there's not nearly as much subjectivity
  7. I finally cheered against an American: the female diver whose Dad owns the Cubby Bear, center and fomenter of all that I despise about Cubs-dom. Petty, I know.
  8. I grew up in Sarasota and still have a ton of family on Florida's Gulf Coast, including my sister and her family and my Grandparents. I'm not too concerned but it feels like the Tampa Bay area has been dodging monster storms forever (although Charley really did a number south of there recently) so one of these days I know the piper will come to collect.
  9. I'd be awfully curious to see who you think the greatest Olympian is. "Swimming" isn't a singular sport like basketball is. They don't just split these events up for the heck of it and to create more medals (it's like saying if there was only one track and field medal, Charles Barkley would be considered on par with Edwin Moses); they're all very different disciplines, and Phelps has excelled in a huge chunk of them in two and a half Olympiads in a row to the tune of 15 medals so far, 13 of them Gold. That's unprecedented. In my opinion, the only Olympians who can touch him are Carl Lewis and Paavo Nurmi.
  10. http://www.hallobay.com/images/2004/SH_Bear_fish_2L.jpg Old Scratch really had to run a hard bargain for the Cubs to give them up, too.
  11. I'm finally coming around to the acceptance that the Brewers path to the playoffs will be the Wild Card. Even after their disgusting capitulation to the Cubs at MP a couple weeks back I held out hope that the Brewers could still give them a run for the division; however, in the two weeks since the Brewers have gone 10-3 (9 games of which were on the road) but with a loss tonight could still end up a half-game behind where they were after the 4-game sweep. That's tough. That train's just chugging away in Chicago and I finally believe the Brew Crew doesn't have the gas to get them...in the regular season at least.
  12. That's similar to my own policy...it's well worth the extra couple dollars to me to just be able to divide by four or five.
  13. In ten years in food service in Florida, Wisconsin, and Chicago, I never once saw someone do something to someone's food anywhere, from the nastiest diners to Michelin starred restaurants. I'm not saying it's never happened anywhere; I just think it's a very overstated fear (and that crummy movie Waiting didn't help subside people's concerns). That said, if I had regulars who I knew were bad tippers, I'd definitely prioritize when they were in my section--I wasn't going to invest more time serving them than I absolutely needed to if there was other tables to be served or work to be done.
  14. Agreed...Miami's definitely my number one, New Orleans #2. Edit: Which I see Marie Claire also listed. Hmmm.
  15. Tipping is one of those topics like religion and politics that people get up in arms about so I usually don't bring it up but since we're here... Personally I try to be a big tipper, for better or for worse: I worked as a waiter and bartender for years during high school, college, and a couple years after, and I know how I always appreciated getting those 25%+ tips, so I try and be that guy. We get a lot of delivery and takeout, too, so I try and do the same there, although usually less, around 15-20%. I know most don't, but I do tip when I pick up takeout, especially if it's at a sitdown restuarant, where a waiter usually has to do the work to put the order together but people seem to think the food just magically appeared. I don't look down on people for their tipping habits, good or bad, usually, but I can't stand when people brag about being bad or non-tippers.
  16. Yeah, I'm glad to see CC out with the guys; like someone else said, I'm glad they hang out in big groups like that. That said, I'm not sure I get the point of the video. Ballplayers skipping lines at clubs shouldn't be news.
  17. Of course, which is why the athletes in these spotlight events (gymnastics, swimming, track) need to adjust and compete in the morning: so US audiences (at least those in the Eastern half) can watch live in prime time.
  18. I was a Riverview Ram (maroon and white) in Sarasota, Florida. Graduated in 1993. I had a great time in high school, did a lot, learned a lot, made a lot of great friends etc. in what was a good facility with great teachers, but I can't say I have any lasting "pride" in it. Even if I still lived there I can't imagine going to the football games or wearing the colors or anything.
  19. With CC on the mound tonight it would've been nice for Atlanta to take at least one today, but counting on sub-.500 teams to do your dirty work is a fool's errand.
  20. This is going to end up at Lambeau Leap, but I'd at least like to see them win at Fresno State (hardly a gimmie) since I'll be there. I see a typical 2 or 3 loss season and another New Year's Day bowl.
  21. Rough night for someone who's apparently normally one of the world's best. Stinks that she had her worst night on the biggest stage, but maybe she can medal in vault later this week. I guess at the least she'll have to be setttle for being a smoking-hot Ivy League student: she really looked like a woman amongst little girls out there (esp. those Chinese gals, who wouldn't look out of place on an elementary school playground). Anyway, yeah, I stayed up for US-Nigeria and I'm paying for it now. I'd probably feel like less of a zombie today if the result had been better but I knew it was going to uphill when Orozco got the red card practically before the match even started. That injury time equalizer from the Dutch is going to stick in my craw for a while now...
  22. Yeah, the whole "Pee Your Pants for the Brewers" site was silly fun; this is just a guy trying to sell overpriced (and ugly, IMO) t-shirts
