  1. I think they found a crate of 2019 baseballs for this one.
  2. Watching that game I feel like I just woke up and it's 2020 all over again.
  3. Houser was impressive. Don't have high hopes but maybe he will be more 2019 and less 2020. With regards to Lauer, never understood why anybody thought he was anything. Was thoroughly unimpressive pitching for San Diego and was terrible pitching outside of Petco. This bad, I suppose not, but I never wanted him in our rotation.
  4. I have seen few if any complaints from Mariners fans about payroll or the state of the rebuild. The fanbase had bought into it and was quite happy with the state of the rebuild as of last week. It was quite an impressive achievement when you consider the playoff drought--although Seattle has won 85+ games in 3 of the last 6 full seasons so it's not like they have been a complete disaster. I would be pretty excited if I was a Mariners fan too. The Cano traded really helped them out and I'm looking forward to watching the progress of Rodriguez amongst others.
  5. Seattle is obviously going through a full rebuild right now. Teams that do that will always slash payroll. You hope the prospects turn out and then spending will increase when the team is on the right course. Seattle has had a history of spending money, perhaps not even wisely, so you would expect them to do so in the future. I remember when Crane bought the Astros. Their payroll was slashed several years in a row. They were horrible but fans were outraged at how cheap the new owner was. Never made sense to spend a bunch of money when the team overall is horrible. Houston got good and their payroll rose accordingly.
  6. It definitely isn't just the loss in revenues. What I'm not certain about is did they actually lose $2.9 billion or, for example, did they lose $1.9 billion but were expected to make $1 billion.
  7. Something does seem a bit strange about his history. After trading for him in 2016, Toronto just left him in AA despite hitting .322 there in 2018. Then they released him after the season. Has a solid 2019, a lost 2020 in part due to catching COVID and then gets DFAd by Miami. Heck he was a top 100 prospect in baseball with the Pirates and they moved him for the immortal Drew Hutchison. Seems like three teams have already decided to move on from him for little or nothing in return.
  8. On a minor league deal it's fine. I just don't have much hope there is anything left there. The way he ended up as a Brewer really left a bad taste in my mouth.
  9. 10 million per year is right in line with what is the going rate. Kluber got $11 million. JA Happ got 8 million. Chris Archer and Jake Arrieta each got 6 million per year and have more question marks than Walker. The sticking point is likely wanting a multi-year deal, but $10 million per season for a 28 year old starting pitcher with his track record is reasonable. But Walker has reached over 150IP in a season what? Once? in his career? (Just checked it's two) He has 67.1 IP total the last 3 years. All those guys who signed for 8-11mil can give you a full season of pitching. Walker gets you to September pushing his limits. That or you give him a Start off every month. And or limit him to 4IP/65pitches per start until September. I think $10 million on a 1 year deal isn't too much of an ask on Walker's part. No way would I go multiple years at that AAV. Kluber has gone all of 37 innings the last two years combined so he certainly is no guarantee to give anybody a full season of pitching.
  10. Classic 4A player thus far in his career. Probably all he'll ever be but the price was right.
  11. If CJ Cron could only get a minor league deal there is no reason to give anything other than that to Lamb. That's about the only way I'd consider him. While he got off to a quick start with Oakland, he finished 4-26 (including playoffs) and that's about all I'd expect from him going forward.
  12. Personally I never had any faith in Urias from the beginning. My feelings were that San Diego had a gaping hole at second base yet chose to trade him. Fairly certain they could have acquired Grisham without his inclusion if they wanted to. So for me, the Padres who knew him better than anyone, decided he wasn't in their plans. He obviously has done nothing to change my mind but hopefully he will prove me wrong.
  13. Not big on Rich Hill but for $2.5 million I would have been good with that.
  14. Why on earth would we want Franco? He's a RHH with a 91 career wRC+ who is a very poor defender at 3B. And with almost 6 full seasons worth of service time, he seems like an unlikely breakout candidate. Brewers already has Robertson who has been a better hitter so far (97 wRC+) and is a couple years younger. And Urias. If your're gonna sign a 3B, make it someone who is a clear upgrade, or who has some potential upside, or who complements the existing ones (like a LHH). Franco is neither. If Franco is a very poor defender at third, why has his UZR/150 rating been better than Justin Turner's the past two years?
  15. I'm sure the Dodgers will be able to flip him for something in the coming days.
  16. Winckowski was rated as the 20th best prospect in the Mets farm system prior to the trade per Baseball America. Was throwing 96 last year so probably a decent prospect. Went unclaimed in the Rule 5 draft however.
  17. I think Cirillo is about it in franchise history depending on what position you want to assign Molitor, Sheffield and Braun.
  18. I hope people aren’t forgetting how good Ramirez was for us. Ridiculous first season, all star in his 2nd year and was traded in 2nd half of 3rd year putting up 31 homers. If Turner is anywhere near that, give the guy any 3 year deal. Now. Ramirez was fantastic for us the first year of his contract and mediocre the next two years although he still posted solid batting averages both years. He was 33 years old when he first played a game for the Brewers. We exercised an option on him for year 4 when he was 36 to begin the season turning 37 in the middle of it. He fell off considerably in 2015, was eventually traded and then retired. The falloff was pretty swift. Who's to say Turner won't fall off just as dramatically at basically the same age as Ramirez? Obviously nobody can know for certain but there is no way I'd go past two years on a contract. He hasn't exactly been that durable in his career either averaging just 120 games the last 4 years (after pro-rating 2020). Personally, I would pass.
  19. Seemed almost inevitable. Highly doubt it will come to anything but here's to hoping.
  20. Per an MLB memo acquired by The Athletic, baseball is seeking to deaden the baseball this year. Additionally, five more teams are going to use a humidor making it 10 teams that use one. Hopefully baseball will be able to manufacture baseballs more consistently as they seem to vary considerably from year to year. https://theathletic.com/2375121/2021/02/08/mlb-changes-baseball-deadening/
  21. Oh the horror! Had to be one of the most undeserving 40-man roster spot occupier in league history.
  22. OMG what? We have a nice 1-2, and nothing but question marks after. OMG, that rotation sucks! Definitely not an OMG for me. Nor is it a rotation sucks for me. There are far too many question marks to really know what that rotation would be. If you got 20 starts and 100 innings out of Hill that would be the max in my mind. Probably even that might be pushing it. Houser might not be as bad as he showed in 2020 but even including 2019, he's a combined 3-13 with a 4.91 ERA. If that is a quality #4, that's pretty scary. Lindblom had 2 decent starts down the stretch and is a complete wild card at this point. Same is true of Lauer. I'm not even certain about Burnes. Always was higher on him than Woodruff. That being said, we are still assuming he's an ace based on a 7 game stretch from last year. Obviously I have great hope but he's not a lock for ace status at all. In the end, IMO, it would lean somewhat closer to it sucks than OMG!.
  23. I would have expected Wong to command an $8 to $10 million contract so I think this fits right into that expectation. I like him as a table setter and defensive whiz. Hopefully Hiura can pick up first base at least passably. Nobody wanted to go into the season with Vogelbach playing first and I can't see Hiura being any worse than that. If he is you either bide time until the DH likely becomes an option next year or he gets traded.
  24. Definitely like the signing. Gives us some options. See if Hiura can play first. If not, clearly he becomes a solid trade candidate in the future or is one right from the get go. Pretty sure the DH is coming but not likely before 2022. So maybe he can play passable defense at first and then become a DH next year if he struggles. Either way, Wong is a solid hitter with elite defense.
  25. We are not trading for Trevor Story. The cost in player capital would be significant plus he's a free agent after the year. It would cost more money than we could afford to keep him around so he would basically turn into a rental. Unless you are ok with completely blowing up the farm system, I just don't see a way this would work. Also not sure we can afford to take on Story's salary unless you trade away some salary.
