  1. I had no idea that we hadn't had a female ump in MLB yet. There is no reason one gender should be better at this than the other. I know there are female NBA refs and that's a hell of a lot more physically demanding than MLB.
  2. There are actually several magic numbers to keep track of: Division: 46 #1 seed: 46 Top 2 seed: 46 (CHC, LAD, and PHL all have the same magic # for us) Top wild card spot: 43 (both NYM and SDP) Any wild card spot: 40 (CIN) Next team to be eliminated (currently Colorado): 11 - by this time next week, we may be moving on to the Nats or Braves.
  3. The baby's due date is still 10 days away, I believe, but they're "in the window" now.
  4. Yes, true, though there is some "setting up" that goes on when teams have off days where you might change the rotation order.
  5. Thank you for all the work here. Can you tell how many times other teams have faced the top pitchers? I understand Milwaukee is facing them slightly more than expected, but I'm curious if there are teams that get them more or less often. My expectation is that teams want their aces to go more against the top teams than the bottom.
  6. This was a sneaky shrewd pickup, perhaps unintentionally. With Chourio down for awhile, Frelick iffy, and Collins due to go on paternity leave soon, having Lockridge as a bridge from this point to when they’re full strength is pretty useful. Maybe only for a few weeks, though, and that’s maybe not as much value as you’d hope for a SP, but let’s see how this goes. So far, not terrible.
  7. Well, congrats to the Collins' first and foremost. We start the 5-gamer against the baby bears on the 18th. Selfishly hope to haye him back for that. If we are down Chourio (almost assuredly), Frelick (maybe), and Collins (for a few days), that means the OF is down to Lockridge, Perkins, and Yelich and whoever they call up. Not that Bauers is a favorite of mine, but he has played some OF - haven't seen any updates on him lately
  8. Looking on mlb.com’s summary, you can view each batter’s pitch sequence. On Lockridge’s K, the sixth pitch was 3-2 count and is listed as a foul (and in the upper inside corner that might have been a strike). He struck out on the next pitch. whether that’s what actually happened, I don’t know.
  9. I get what you mean - they have scored more runs than most. However, they had two total hits yesterday. Granted that was against 6 innings of one-hit Woodruff, and we have a spot starter today. The top of their order does seem pretty dangerous. Lord also no-hit, no-walked us at AmFam over 2.1 innings before the ASB. I think the Nats are probably moving him into the rotation by process of elimination after the moves at the trade deadline. He’s been fairly effective as a long-ish pen arm.
  10. Everyone in the lineup has a walk or a hit. Need Contreras to get a base knock for all the starters with at least one hit
  11. Last night was a good illustration about the dangers of being drawn to a guy like Abrams. He’s unquestionably a better offensive producer than Ortiz, but by my subjective perception, his atrocious defense made the game unwinnable for the Nats. You want to think that every defensive position is equally important, but SS is the anchor spot - I have no data to back that up, but I have believed it from the time I started playing T-ball. Do I wish we had better bats and some depth on the left side of the infield? Sure. But I also believe we’d be a worse team with Abrams - I don’t believe that one bat > all the runs not prevented due to poor D. Probably feel the same about Suarez. It’s not unarguable, though.
  12. Understand the sentiment, but last night’s 9 runs allowed were mostly in the late innings with massive leads - not great, but not too concerned.
  13. This is a really minor thing, but it’s a laugher, so what the hey - Jansen seems to be not quite as skilled a framer as either Contreras or Haase. Perhaps it’s a product of being unfamiliar with the staff, or perhaps he just has different mechanics. Either way, there were a few borderline pitches tonight that got called balls that Contreras gets for strikes more often.
  14. For what it's worth, those combined RA/RS ranks equal 13. That's also the lowest number (Cubs are 14, Detroit 15, NYY 18, PHL 19). But, but, but exit velo...
  15. However many times the negative nellies try to make me feel shame for being ok with "just making the playoffs", I trust the front office > message board know-it-alls.
  16. I think there’s an impression that the Marlins are more hapless than they actually are. They’re currently only 5 games under .500, and on an 11-7 streak including series wins over the Royals and Padres. They’re not walkovers. Unfortunately, the Cubs have a true walkover series against their crosstown rivals.
  17. Are you forgetting that Cortes is about to return? It'd be super controversial, but might they put Miz back down to AAA when Cortes returns? Bring him back up at some point in that no layoff stretch and doubleheader.
  18. Otherwise known as low-leverage situations - get that, especially now with his rust. When Ashby returned from his paternity leave, I was surprised he stayed up. Seems like 3 long relievers in the pen is . . . ample.
  19. If Rodriguez had walked, I wonder if they would have considered intentionally walking the dumper to avoid the possibility of a slam. Probably not because you’d still be up 2, but the thought still goes through one’s mind.
  20. Agree with everything except that Woo was an all-star SP that started yesterday. Good bunch of starters though and a very good closer.
  21. It is a good dilemma to have, but not too hard to deal with. They'll option Black or Siegler (probably Siegler until Hoskins is back), If you take a 7-game stretch, you have 21 spots to fill in the OF (7x3). The distribution of those slots could be Chourio 6, Frelick 6, Collins 5, Perkins 4. I like giving Chourio and Frelick each a staggered game off so that you have one of them in every game, and both in 5/7, and give them a little bit of rest. The odd man out can be a good PH option.
  22. Ms pitched Woo yesterday (old-timey pun intended) and will now face Big Woo. I won’t be awake for the end of this one,
