  1. And after that infield ump blew that call at 3B, Low went back to famine to load the bases. I believe that's his 6th walk (?) in 2 2/3 IP. Meanwhile in the bullpen RHP Jose Chavez has literally thrown his first three pitches wide of his bullpen catcher. This is incredible DSL stuff we're seeing at Columbia from the Mudcats bullpen. LOL. And, another swinging strike on a wild pitch ball in the dirt. 3-of-4 Fireflies runs have been absolutely gifted by the Mudcats. 5-4. Precarious lead.
  2. Here he is stumbling. And here he is impractically laying out for the catch. Unbelievable play. And, now, you get to see it replayed via the Bird...er....um I mean 'X' app:
  3. Chourio just made a ridiculous catch in CF after stumbling in his release. Meanwhile Low and Diaz were robbed of a strike him out throw him out play at 3B. Do you think Adams knew he got the tag down in time? Ummmm, yeah. Just another day in the Minor Leagues.
  4. Two walks in three batters here in Low's third inning of work. He now has four walks in 2 1/3 IP. The homeplate ump is calling an odd zone - missing two clear beautiful strikes in his work. But, that ump is certainly not responsible for Low's overall inability to find the zone.
  5. Strez gets the double play ball but Hiura can't manage to scoop the rushed turn and throw just in the dirt to 1B. Two down. And the rain starts absolutely pouring down as they look to rush the tarp onto the field. 5-3 Sounds. Bottom of the 7th. 1-0 count. Man on first. Two down.
  6. LHP Alex Claudio finds much too much of the center of the plate on a one out 0-0 pitch. The Tides' batter rips a triple to the wall in deep left center. He then gives up a single to LF to a lefty. It's suddenly 5-3 Sounds. Claudio has definitely scuffled of late. He's getting hit around often in his recent outings. Sweet will pull him after 15 pitches. It appears as though we're going to see RHP Peter Strzelecki.
  7. 2 AB's for INF Zavi Warren tonight. 3 rbi's. INF Isaac Collins stole a base when a pitch went into the dirt and off the catcher. Warren then hits a bloop liner into center CF. Shuckers lead 3-0. Low mercifully got a double play ball to end his first frame. That was an ugly inning of work. These bouts of relief work or GS work when he just can't find the zone anywhere have become all too prevalent lately. I need to see that version that is ripping his stuff. Meanwhile, INF Luis Urías just took an off-speed delivery over the wall in LF. Sounds pull ahead 5-1. You love to see that pep in Luis' bat. He needs it. And, you love to see the Sounds with a shot to take another here at Norfolk. Hiura just ripped a hard hit liner into LF for a two-out single here in the 7th. Hiura is having a really nice night at the dish.
  8. And, now Low has thrown a ball in the dirt that goes to the backstop. 5-2 Mudcats. Low is once again fighting himself searching for his stuff and the plate. 2-0 count here. Low throws another wild pitch into the dirt but Diaz sprints to grab it and dives to tag out the runner at home. Runners at the corners. Now full as Low is robbed of a strike dead inner cut at the knees. Terrible miss by the home plate ump. BUT, when you're consistently wild you often don't get those calls. Low has to find the plate and trust his stuff here. Yikes. Next pitch, ball in the dirt again. Woof.
  9. Off the bat, we have the inaccurate Low. 3-0 count. Walked on four pitches. This is the type of wildness Low has battled from time-to-time in Low-A. He has elite stuff. But, he struggles to consistently find the zone. He starts his second AB with an off-speed pitch inside. 1-0 count that leads to a heater dead center cut ripped for a diving stop but infield single. We now have the bases juiced for the Fireflies. Nobody down.
  10. A 3-run jack by OF Luis Castillo extended the Mudcats lead to 5-1. RHP Quinton Low is now on in releief of RHP Alexander Valecillo after he gave up a lead-off single to LF to start the 5th frame. He ended his night with 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R (unearned), 1 BB, 1 K. Let's hope we get that blazingly good version of Low.
  11. The Sounds had struck out 6 times through 3 1/3 IP. 1B Keston Hiura says: Who cares? He smacks an oppo dinger just over the RF wall - his 15th long ball of 2023. 1-0 Sounds.
  12. Sounds and Tides are scoreless as we head to the top of the 3rd. RHP Caleb Boushley just successfully worked around a two out double to RF. Sounds have yet to knock a hit. Boushley has allowed 3. Meanwhile, the Mudcats have new lead-off 1B Tayden Hall in the batters box to begin game 2. 0-0 in the top of the 1st.
  13. Here's a random High-A Deep Cut: The Cedar Rapids Kernels have made the High-A playoffs in every season since they became a Minnesota Twins affiliate in 2013. That's absolutely bananas. Heck of an affiliate and heck of a job the Twins are doing populating their High-A rosters.
  14. I'm very excited to see RHP Brandon Woodruff get an opportunity to face the Kernels tomorrow. Let's see how deep he goes after hurling 3 IP at Dayton and topping out at 97 mph after 32 pitches. He pitched in the bullpen to get his pitch count to exactly where they wanted it as the staff probably didn't want to risk the 4 IP.
  15. I understand the thinking here from the Kernels' Lefty. BUT, imo, you have to throw to home plate here. That's a clear out and the lead runner is now standing on 2B. I take my chances of avoiding damage and get the sure out at home plate to maintain the tie trusting I'll make a timely and accurate throw:
  16. 100% correct. Man, if we could get this location on a game-by-game basis? Whewwwww.
  17. When you have a heater as good as Freddy, today was yet another lesson: You still eat your bread with your off-speed stuff. Off-speed is so important. It sets everything else up. The heater becomes even more lethal. We saw it in Burnes' start two games ago. Today, Peralta was so mature in his arsenal and his stuff. But, the off-speed was what made it go. We are seeing this in the lower Levels too. The best relievers are unafraid with their heater but they eat with their off-speed. RHP Shane Smith is a current example of this at High-A Wisconsin. Anywho, I absolutely love it when fastball guys exploit their stuff and attack with off-speed to set their entire outing up for success. It's brilliant. This was a brilliant start.
  18. He was a Minor League FA pick-up in the 2021 off-season. The best part of this story? He was originally signed back in 2014 as a Cubbie in their Venezuelan Academy. He's still only 26. SO, this is yet another testament to being patient with talented players. It takes these guys time. Time and opportunity. After the Cubbies stint he went to the Nationals in the Daniel Murphy trade (with a PTBNL in the deal alongside Monasterio). From Washington, he was sent to the Guardians in 2018 where he opted for FA after playing for the Columbus Clippers in the International League.
  19. He is fast developing two very nasty off-speed offerings in his slider and his hammer curve. He remains unafraid to challenge hitters with his 95-96 mph 4-seamer up and in to boot. A very intriguing bullpen arm.
  20. Smith with a straight nasty and gutsy slider down and away getting Ortega flailing. The T-Rats win! 8-7. Heck of a job by the bullpen of Guerrero, Vassalotti, and Smith (who has been fantastic since his promotion). The T-Rats move back to 0.500 in the 2nd half 13-13 and gain a game back of the 1st Place Kernels. They are now 4.0 GB.
  21. And the T-Rats take the lead, 8-7 on a Hendry Mendez force out where Je'Von Ward (pinch runner) scores on the groundout. Let's go!
  22. Oh baby, we call him 'The Smithy'. RHP Shane Smith escapes the two on nobody out jam. He gets the fly out to Doston in LF, the pop up to Garcia at 3B, and the K. 7-7 and we're into the bottom half of the 8th frame.
  23. Wait a minute! Toro is at 1B? Er mer gerrrrrd. They did it. Unorthodox but he was actually really good at Nashville and his bat plays on any side of the plate in 2023. Love to see it. Turang with two knocks, to boot? Glory be. Pinch me, Clarence!
  24. Really happy for Guerrero to return to High-A and find success of late. He paid his dues and then some after being re-assigned to Carolina after last season's struggles. You love to see it! It's still knotted at 7 late but RHP Shane Smith has opened his second inning of work with a lead-off single and a walk. Nobody out.
