    Some good stuff here. I think it's mistaken to blame shifts for low league-wide OPS last season--they changed the ball. And I'd like to know what the effect might be on our pitchers.

    All they could do is examine him (and any imaging they took) to assure that the operations weren't terrible failures and that his recovery was on schedule. As they couldn't evaluate his ability to do baseball activities, they really don't know if he will be limited. That's not hard to understand, is it? Yelich was supposedly 100% recovered from his knee, and we see how that turned out. But it's really not like they have a lot riding on it. Instead of paying Wong $2M for a buyout, they paid the M's $1.75M and got Winker and Toro in return. So if they get over 1.1WAR performance from the both of them, they're ahead of the game.

    How could they? I read he couldn't start baseball activities until January, and that was just an estimate.

    The Brewers could have refused the option and paid Wong $2M. Instead, they paid the Mariners $1.75M and got two players who were at least worth taking a shot on. Viewed that way, it won't take much for the Brewers to have come out ahead on this trade. Now, if they're paying Winker $8+M and he hasn't recovered from his surgeries, that makes things different.

    What might change it is if Binelas is in the majors in 2024 and hits 150 HR over his first 6 years. Management did identify a guy whose team was trying to move him, and took advantage of that. Whether it was a great trade or not won't be known for a few years at least.

    We didn't get him for JBJ, we got him for Binelas (23 on Boston's top 30, even after an underwhelming 2022 which included 25 HR) and Hamilton (70 SB last year in AA).

    I think this was just some guy trying to make some content to post. The only way I could see making a trade with AZ for one of the OFs, is if we sent them more OFs than what we sent. And even that seems unlikely for several reasons. Varsho's trade value (BTV) is on the level of Burnes or Chourio, so I don't see any way we could acquire him.

    well, other than that he has been on the 26 man major league roster, and has hit well in the minors. his defense is (supposedly) the only thing holding him back.

    The Phillies won one more game than us, and they won the WS. With the top of our rotation, it's always a possibility.

    I think the reasons, in order of priority are: 1) pay for the raises that arbitration-eligible players would be getting. 2) provide opportunities for our rookies to play. I see absolutely no evidence that the moves were made to make us better in 2023 (rather, they're just hoping the young players get better and rookies thrive). It's possible, though unlikely, that some player (say Vaquez) doesn't get very good offers and the Brewers swoop in. They'll probably sign one decent reliever, and whatever they can sign to minor league contracts (Apparently, acquiring pitchers with ERAs over 5.00 is the new moneyball). Maybe we'll acquire a decent player at the deadline, if we're in the playoff race. I'd be surprised as hell if Toro hits anywhere close to .300; in AA and AAA, he played in places where batting was inflated. The pitchers we got from LAA aren't very good, and aren't young enough to make a huge, sustained jump in performance--that was one of my complaints, that they didn't take a flyer on a young pitcher. Again, there is no $10M in salary relief. Winker and the $1.75M to the M's ate up Wong's salary. Salary savings (and actually, they are savings from projected salary) from Renfroe will go to their arbitration players. Our only hope is that our players improve from 2022, and our rookies hit the ground running.

    There have been several threads in this forum that have detailed trades of one or more of our big 3 to LAD, including 2 of my "blueprints" which involved both Burnes and Adames. Some of us would prefer getting Vargas.

    I would prefer to bring them all back, and maybe move them at the deadline in 2023 if we're not in the running for the playoffs. But what you are offering is the worst possible choice. IMO, either you bring them all back or you trade all of them where you can get a good return. If you trade them, you concentrate on collecting players who are close to the majors (ideally players who might be called up in 2023, or 2024 at the latest).

    Only if you define "best" as the teams which won the most games. The distinction is that the best team never wins all its games against even very bad teams (if they play enough games), and that a considerable amount of wins are determined by good or bad luck. The only way to evaluate it would be to find a time machine to go back to the start of the season and run a bunch of "simulations," but obviously we can't do that in the real world. Unless we're God.

    Phillies picked 7 guys in the minor league portion, and lost 5. I'm guessing they kept picking to try to replace some of the guys they lost.

    I think he could still put up a few good ML seasons, but he's a good bet as a AAAA guy you can bring up and not get embarrassed.

    Last year I thought the Cards over performed their true ability (as a team), while the Brewers under-performed. I still believe the Brewers were the better team. If the Cards add a SS after adding Contreras, and after the at-best lateral moves we've made, we might just be hoping for a wildcard slot.

    they've got a few INF in NASH that could get called up; Devanney might be the only one with more upside than a AAAA guy.
