  1. It's ideal, but not necessary. For example, if you produce a quality starting pitcher every year, you can trade the excess to fill in at weak positions.

  3. Turang hasn't established himself as a better shortstop than Adames yet.

  5. No, it's not. 2B is right after SS on the position spectrum. It's not like little league where you hide your worst defenders at 2B and RF.

  7. So they clone Woodruff and overpay both of them?
  8. You're right that this discussion seems circular and pointless. IMO, it's ludicrous to move one of your best players off his preferred position, which he plays well, for a prospect who is no guarantee to earn a full-time starting position in 2023. In a computer game, sure, move them around like they're not people, but they are people. In the real world, you don't jerk your best performers around. If Turang had 100+ ABs in the majors at the end of the year, and hit .270+, sure, then he's proven something. But he hasn't. Judging by past rookies, he has a good chance he won't be able to stick in the majors all year. And it won't hurt him (or the Brewers) to play multiple positions for a year or two.

  10. Diaz would be great, except he becomes a FA the same time Burnes/Woodruff do. Moving Adames off SS is ludicrous. He's a quality SS and he's only going to be around for 1-2 more years.

  12. Vargas would be a useful guy to have, but he's probably not sticking at 3B. He could be a corner INF/OF/DH for us.

  14. The only thing surprising about Travis Shaw is that he spontaneously forgot how to hit.

  16. Everyone is a trade candidate if you find a trading partner who values the player more than you do. My preference would be to ride out Woodruff and Burnes for at least one more season, extending either if you can for even one season of FA. But it's equally reasonable to trade Woodruff, Burnes, and Adames for (mostly) MLB-ready players with an eye on competing in 2024..

  18. I hope they sign him, and the Brewers get some significant compensation. Any prospects that might be available?

  20. Thanks, I didn't know (or remember) that.
  21. Taylor will get a raise if he is brought back. The organization has shown pretty well that Hiura is not a long-term piece. They can't trade Brown yet. The haul for Murphy isn't enough (BTV site); I don't think he'll be worth what we have to give up for him and Quero might be ready in 2024. And the bullpen is weaker than last year.
  22. Burnes won't make THAT much. He still has 2 arbitration years. Woodruff is also marginally overpaid. Lauer would require more (his arb. estimate is 5.2 in 2022; he'll average more than $6M on a 5 year contract (maybe $50M?). And your 2022 $ estimates on these extensions are too high--salaries will increase over time. Way too much deferred money. Maybe do it for Burnes, but not the rest. You're bringing back the same guys (plus Turang and Frelick); only hope is that players improve.
  23. You answered your own concerns. Look at his #s when his BABIP was .300+ (August-October). That's the true Adames. If anything, I think an extension would be a good case of buying low. OTOH, Turang needs to be given a chance to be our long-term SS.

  25. Burnes is the one they should open the bank for. I don't think it will happen, but if we truly believe: "you need those types of pitchers to effectively compete for a World Series. Yet, they are in rare supply and are particularly hard to develop." Burnes is the one to target. A top 3 SP, not a top 15 SP. But if our position player prospects hit, we might not need 3 top 25 SP to win.
