  1. Sometimes I wonder if some of you are even fans of the game. If you were, you'd know that bad teams beat good teams regularly. Therefore, it's a mistake to get too excited about the results from any single game. But the thing we really have going for us, and the thing that has to happen for a long, successful playoff run, is that we're really hard to beat when we get a great start (and if we get everyone up to speed, we can have a rotation of 4 aces) and then hand it off to the back end of the pen, which has been great. Until Wednesday, when two of our excellent relievers each gave up a run. That's why we lost. We have a paradigm, and we failed it. And I can't believe those of you who think the cardinals are a threat for the division. They've outperformed expectations while we've hit expectations or (more commonly) are worse than expectations, and we still have a 3 game lead. The only way we don't win the division is if we really screw the pooch. But yeah, for those of you who feel a need to state the obvious, it would be great if our offense and fielding improved too. And maybe they could reduce the cost of beers at the game.
  2. With Renfroe and Taylor back, we're OK. Davis should only be a 5th OF/defensive replacement. Without them, we need a significant bat. Doesn't help when the back end of the bullpen gives up a couple of runs.
  3. his peripherals show that Woodruff was pitching fine, just not getting the results that one would expect.
  4. season doesn't end until October 5, but I probably should have said "after rosters expand."
  5. He's not very good. He's not doing that much better than Dahl, and we have him under contract at Nashville.
  6. It's clear to me that we have too many AAAA guys playing too big of a role. Davis is hitting at Cain levels now after a hot start, but he's starting because we don't have another healthy CF. Alexander and Chi-Chi have done what you hope AAAA guys will do--eat some innings--but it's a problem going back to that well repeatedly. Nothing wrong with cycling some AAAA guys through the major leagues when you have an acute need, but they should not stay on the team very long. Dahl might have more upside on offense than Davis, because he actually was a successful major league hitter for a while. And trade Severino, for God's sake. If we want a 3rd C in October, we have options in the minors.
  7. You should look at the rosters of some AAA teams. The pitching staffs are full of older AAAA dudes who don't have the stuff to make it in the majors. They might have better command than the average AA pitcher, but they don't have better stuff.
  8. but being in AAA instead of AA doesn't change that.
  9. I see no reason to promote Reetz. AA isn't that much below AAA in quality of opponents (the top end might even be better), and there's no one at AAA catching that ought to be demoted. Let him have success and come into spring training with a chance to impress.
  10. I don't think it requires much optimism to think we'll be the division champion. Going beyond that requires some luck.
  11. What kind of SP can we get on an expiring contract for Small?
  12. 3 games better right now. Double it for the full season. That's enough for them to be at 90+ wins, even if they don't improve. That gets them in the playoffs (and division champion). Then they just need two SP to dominate.
  13. Brewers have outperformed their pythagorean W/L for the last 7 years. It's what they do, largely because of the back of the bullpen.
  14. keeping him at AAA is a higher aspiration?
  15. so all the guys who were saying run differential is hugely important now think our chances (to get into and win games) in the playoffs are much better, right?
  16. DSL2 scored 7 runs (in 11 innings) on just two hits (both singles). Even with 8 walks, that's hard to accomplish.
  17. I don't know how you got that I suggested we go all in next year. Maybe delete me from that article.
  18. I don't know how you got that I suggested we go all in next year. Maybe delete me from that article.
  19. Looks like getting a starting pitcher might be a good idea.
  20. The only reason to trade Woodruff before the end of 2024 season is if the brewers are out of the playoffs and they are offered something exceptional for him. We'll have him under control through his age 31 season. His peak may have been last year. Let someone else pay him in 2025.
  21. It's really quite astounding. His average is 42 points higher than his previous career high. His slugging is 181 points higher than his previous career high. Have there been stories about him doing something different?
  22. I was hoping Wiemer would be a call-up at some point in the season, but he's been pretty bad for the month of June. Hope he finishes strong.
  23. La Stella's contract is weird 2.0, 5.25, and 11.5 M over 3 years. Does the team have an option on that last year? If so, I can't see them picking it up. If you can't sign Jace for 2 years $6-7M total, you shouldn't sign him.
  24. I think they try to extend themselves as a playoff team as long as they can, then blow things up when they clearly are trending in the wrong direction.
