  1. Ariel Assault? The Penatentiery? (I know ap and pronounciation, but it kinda works) The House of Pena? Thinking along the lines of Vaughn's Valley.
  2. It's kind of a stilted question, as we now know the hole in the team this year. Obviously, having Rivera would have led to a few more wins this year. If you asked at the beginning of the season, I take Mays. Superior defense in CF, one of the best offensive players in history. Adding him makes the rest of the team deeper. Maddux is intriguing, as you can never have too much pitching, but I was pretty happy with our rotation pre-season.
  3. Yount's 3000th hit, Canseco getting 40/40
  4. Soulard is not walkable, but it would be a relatively short and cheap cab ride. As far as STL style pizza, I agree, it is offputting. I occasionally enjoy it, but don't consider it pizza.
  5. I've not been to Iron Barley, but have been told it is good. Pappy's is good, it's one of those line goes around the building places, but worth the wait. Crown Candy is good as well. I hear you on the arch, you have to do it, even though you know it's meh. Washington Ave. has a mix of bars/clubs. If I'm not mistaken, most of the bars there are kinda trendy/high end/clubby. If you're looking for more of a Madison/bar atmosphere, I would try Soulard. It is near the SLU campus, and it's a pretty good time. Cab ride would be cheap.
  6. I think it's a neat concept, and I hope you have success with it. It may be easier to pick a lucky kid to represent for each race. Put their name and maybe the story on back. Print them a t-shirt too, and maybe give them your race number afterwards, or something like that. I would think you could call the local children's hospital, and ask if they have any kids who may be interested in you "running for them". I'd bet you would find some takers, most likely in the teen age group.
  7. I live 10 minutes outside of the city, happy to help! For those without kids, the nightlife isn't too far from the stadium. Laclede's Landing is always popular, expect covers at most places. Washington Ave can trend a slight bit older (maybe a little more 30s than 20s). Depending on if you have a DD, I prefer Westport, which is on the North western side of the city. As far as during the day, the Arch may be obligatory, but I found it a waste of time. The Bud tour isn't bad, and last time I went, they had Clydesdales there. I haven't seen the MvF episodes, but guessing Crown Candy, and maybe Pappys is on there. If you're BBQ fans, check out both Pappys (near SLU), and Bogarts (in Soulard, not far from downtown). Vastly different, but equally excellent. May want to check out Ted Drewes frozen custard, it's pretty good. Casinos are always fun, the Lumiere has good restaurants as well. For those with kids, most of the same applies. City museum is pretty cool, regardless of age. Forrest Park is really nice, the zoo, a number of museums, and a whole lot of other things to do in there. STL has a really nice zoo, if they're at all interested, it's worth it. If anyone has specific restaurant questions (best place for..) feel free to ask. I will give my non-expert opinion! I'm sure it's been mentioned, but STL isn't really a tailgating city for Cardinals games. The stadium is in the middle of downtown, so most parking is garage parking.
  8. Spin Doctors, Summerfest, summer of 1993 I believe.
  9. I agree, but I agree regardless of the standings. 3 straight series wins over the 3 teams ahead of us in the division means no selling to me.
  10. I don't think it was a contradiction. A 7-2 start out of the break, with a sweep of the Reds, makes DM's position to sell nearly impossible. It tells the team and fans, it doesn't matter if you win. At some point there is a human aspect to the game, it can't be all cold strategy. In reality a sweep doesn't exactly send them flying up the charts, to a point where they are obvious buyers, but it kinda limits his fire sale.
  11. The next few series are all important. As long as they continue to win series, they will not sell. MA and DM both are not guys who like to write off a season. If they continue to take series, they will view it as a chance at the playoffs. The Brewers aren't going to use the Florida model. MA wants competitive teams, he wants the playoff push. Not saying this is right or wrong, I think he just conducts business differently. I think much to the dismay of this forum, the Brewers will buy at the deadline (not necessarily a big move), rather than sell.
  12. Jayson Stark was on ESPN radio down here in STL yesterday, and they discussed the Greinke situation. He agreed with the majority sentiment of this thread. It's bad, whatever the reason. If he's healthy, you're losing him for the most important stretch of the season. You're also scaring off suitors, because they will suspect injury. He thinks this cost the Brewers a chance at getting maximum value for him. I hope he's wrong. I believe he actually said, and I'm not positive of the direct quote "I don't know what they could possibly be thinking, doing this"
  13. For whatever reason, I hadn't really considered TuesdaysWithRillo's suggestion. I just assumed he'd be garbage time guy or maybe the 7th inning. I would love to see him used in pressure situations, he doesn't seem to back down from it. Long term, I'd give him his shot at starting. To me, pitching frame is something you look at when drafting, after that, you let results speak.
  14. I would add Sheets to the list for the future. I think Jenkins is a no-brainer, Higuera and Cirillo as well. Possible consideration to Surhoff. I agree, no need to make this uber-exclusive, but don't need Ben Grieve in there either.
  15. Take it easy, pumpkin. You're getting worked up over something that doesn't matter. Period. Maybe see if you can get a reaction over on the ESPN boards. People over there will give you what you are looking for. Try using text speak too. It will make your point even stronger! OMG
  16. I guess I'm trying to figure out what the story is here? Kemp didn't pick him, why is this news? He has the entire league to choose from, he can pick who he wants. I don't remember him coming out and saying "screw Braun, he'll never be on my ridiculous HR team, and he can't come to my birthday party either". He picked other guys, so what? Plenty of fans of plenty of teams are disappointed they don't have someone to pull for. Braun isn't really the prototypical slugger for these anyways. People like seeing Fielder and Hamilton types hit the ball a million feet. True, he's leading the league in HR, but it's Kemp's decision. He picked good names, it's not like Dee Brown and Cesar Izturis are representing the NL.
  17. Down in STL, we are in the midst of what is supposed to be 10 straight days over 100. I saw heat like this in San Antonio back in '98, and when deployed to the UAE in '03, but I expected it there. It's just miserable outside. Not cooling down at night, just hot.
  18. The radio said the Nets need to find a third team to have a chance at Howard.
  19. I work as a civilian for the Air Force, and got news today that I was accepted for a Masters Program in Supply Chain Management through Syracuse University. Was up against anyone from the DOD who decided to apply. Includes 2 residencies at Syracuse, and a week long international residency in Singapore. The rest is virtual. Best part, because this is sponsored by a company, everything is free of charge. Travel/books/degree. A free Masters Degree, that's not bugging me.
  20. Nah, maybe Hammond is aware that Milwaukee is going to be contracted, and is organizing a dominant volleyball team. That would make more sense than stockpiling assets in the one area that we have an overabundance (i know i know, you can never have too many scrawny one-dimensional shot blockers).
  21. I never thought I would say this, but I would have preferred Meyers Leonard. We draft a guy that we already had 2 too many of. How to split the 5 minutes a game these guys deserve between 3 people? Henson needs to put on about 50 pounds to be effective. You can have a designated shot blocker 4 (like Ibaka), if you have a tough 5 (like Perkins). We do not. Once again, our second round pick is better than our first. Hope they give him a chance, and don't dump him like they did Meeks. Wow, what a terrible first. Zeller, either of the Jones brorthers, hell even the French guy would have been a better pick.
  22. The Lone Rangers were rock at its best I loved that movie. Still would like to see Rock of Ages, but guessing I will wait until it's on-demand.
  23. Draft related, but not necessarily Bucks related. Chad Ford said this morning that OKC is offering Harden to the Bobcats for the #2 pick, which they would use on Brad Beal. Would you do this if you are Charlotte? I would in a heartbeat.
  24. I'll be surprised if one of the 2 young guys don't take Dalembert's minutes. He couldn't wrestle away time from Marcus Camby last year. Logic dictates that we take a guard, and Ross would seem to be the man. That being said, I think they go Terrence Jones.
  25. If I recall, Dalembert is pretty much a defensive specialist. Hate giving up on Leuer, who I thought showed pretty well last year. If no picks go back to Houston, I have a hard time finding anything wrong with this. Pretty much turning a 2 into a 1...with Livingston and Brockman being fodder. *EDIT, nevermind, I see we get Dalembert for the 2 slot drop. Meh.
