  1. Enjoy the current lousy weather, which would be a mild inconvenience in WI, but shuts down STL as if it were the storm of the century. St Charles is fun, if you want to venture across the river, look up the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. It's a drive through display of millions of Christmas lights, it's really cool. Looking for good food in city depends on what you like to eat. Blackthorn Pub is a dump of a dive with the best Chicago style pizza around (Tower Park area), The Vine on Grand has awesome middle-eastern food, there are tons of good eating/drinking spots in the Central West End, just outside of downtown. If you want BBQ, hit Bogarts in Soulard. If you want good Italian, prepare to be disappointed for the most part. The legendary "Hill" area, that people here love, is pretty lousy in my opinion. For nightlife, there is Laclede's Landing downtown, which is a pretty young crowd. Westport has quite a few bars, but is not all that near downtown. The rare occasions I have to go out at night are typically spent in the Central West End. I particularly enjoy Sub Zero, which is a pretty cool vodka bar. If you want to catch a game, the Blues are in town Saturday night, and this is the only group of STL fans that I can tolerate. The Scott Trade Center is really a home ice advantage place, the games are awesome.
  2. I think Buzz does that just to get them some game experience, not necessarily to evaluate. Wisconsin looks decent, I would agree with those who say they are properly ranked. I didn't get a chance to see Marquette. Watched the Duke-Davidson game, I've never seen a Duke team like this. I can't believe that there is more than 1 prospect better than Jabari Parker. That kid is pretty amazing.
  3. You're right Patrick, low limit tables have disappeared from all of the trendy casinos. You have to hit the older ones you mentioned to find that kind of action. It gets annoying. I'm going in about a month, and am staying at Ballys, which I think at least offers $10 tables in multitude. The last time I was in LV, we were at NY/NY, a place that I loathe. There were no open spots at any of the tables in the 10-25 range. There were three empty 100 tables. I asked the pit boss to lower the stakes at one of them, as we had a full table of people that would have sat down. She laughed at the suggestion. When I questioned the logic of an empty 100 table (with 2 more available), versus the action of bringing in a full tables worth of $25 players, she just looked at me blankly. I could understand it if I was asking her to lower the 1 high limit table, but it was an off time, and the high rollers weren't out. She had 10 $100 spaces to fill before it was a problem. I didn't ask her to lower to $5, I was a little surprised she turned it down. Money in is money in. Stupid is as stupid does.
  4. I agree with your for the most part Caballo. They showed some heart in coming back. I like your "Goods", and agree with your "Ugly", not sure I do on the "Bad". Wolters wasn't great, but like you said, to go from 12th man to basically starting PG, is a big leap. He wasn't at Syracuse last year, he was at SDSU. The jump in level is astonishing. If he's going to be useful, it's going to be a few years down the road. I didn't have a huge problem with The Freak's minutes. He looked raw out there, a little unsure. Skiles wouldn't have even played him. I think Drew is trying to figure out who's comfortable out there. I too am puzzled by Middleton. I think they saw something in him that might not be there. He was the "sleeper" of the Knight trade for them. It's hard to judge the game last night without Knight. Not sure how much differently it would have gone. It looked like Caron really enjoyed his homecoming, and if we're going to watch guys who are past their prime, might as well be someone who wants to be here! Mayo didn't stand out a ton to me last night.
  5. [sarcasm]We should trade him while his value is high[/sarcasm]
  6. Rondo, I did for the longest time, until I used an offbrand detergent, and it pretty much bleached swirls in everything that it touched. Now I use the tide packs. They are awesome.
  7. Lost track of this post, thanks guys! It really has been an ordeal, and there were times where it was hard to be positive. We almost lost him last summer to a nasty virus, and some really poor attention to detail on the physician's part. He's finally becoming a "normal" kid, and believe me, that is hard to accomplish. It takes a lot of effort to not overreact to everything, and treat him like he is made of glass. He doesn't really have an understanding of what has happened to him. His scars don't bother him, they have always been there, and he doesn't notice them. DHonks, I'm so glad to hear that your family had positive experiences with transplants. I can never hear enough long term success stories!
  8. Isn't Rizzo pretty entrenched at 1B in Chicago? I think this is the Cubs taking a look at a free reclamation project. Turn him into a backup/PH guy. If he was going to STL I would be worried.
  9. I agree that table stakes helps to define a strategy. If I'm playing for fun, and at a $5 table, I don't care what happens. I get slightly more irritated at the $25 tables. At that stake, I expect you to have a basic understanding of blackjack rules. I'm not a big drinker, so the extremely inslopsicated at the tables always annoy me. I actually had a pretty amusing argument at a table in some Indian casino in Florida. They were using a constant shuffle machine, with what I believe was a 6 deck shoe. Basically, after every hand, the cards were placed back in the machine and reincorporated in the shoe. No stopping to shuffle, non stop action for the casino. Eliminates any and all strategy, as you are basically resetting after every hand. There was a gentleman who was irate over some young woman's erratic play. I tried to tell him that with the setup they had, each hand was basically independent of all others. He was sure she was "screwing up the deck". Why give your money away when you don't even understand the rules of the particular table? Winning at that table could only be described as luck. You might as well have been calling heads/tails or playing WAR.
  10. Patrick, I rarely split 9s either. IMO, and it differs from your strategy, the only way to win at BJ consistently is to win the Double Downs and Splits. I play a cumulative strategy. I increase by one chip when I win a hand, and reduce to initial bet at the end of the streak. I am very aggressive with double downs, and I can say that I win more than I lose. I'm fine with any strategy at a table, so long as it is consistent. If you sit on 16s, do it every time. I hate when people try to time the deck, and change strategy based on what they "feel" is coming. It's a 6-8 deck shoe, a third of which is spoiled, you can't have any idea what is coming next. Besides the obvious basics, I hit a 12 against a 2, I double anything playable against a bust card, and I always try to sit at 1st or 3rd base. I go in assuming I'll lose my buy in, so once at the table, I don't really worry about individual bet denominations. I tend to walk away when I get bored, or hit a round number. I'll usually walk when I triple up, or double up if the table is a grind.
  11. Crudale was teaching pitching down here in SW Illinois a few years ago. Then I think he left to go pitch in an independent league somewhere. Was coaching my old neighbor for a summer.
  12. This is just going to be an odd team to watch. A bunch of journeymen and young guys. Your marquee player is a defensive specialist. Your rookie is 2 years away from being ready to play, regardless if he plays or not. Your young talent is all basically the same. Tall, skinny defenders. Ilyasova and Mayo are third and fourth options on good teams. Not bad players, just not elite. Delfino is a rotation guy, Pachulia is past where his prime should have been, Knight is a lesser version of Jennings. This team could be Bobcats level bad. My guess is they'll be just scrappy enough to sit middle lottery.
  13. Caron Butler in the mix, at least he wants to play here. This has to be the oddest assembled team that I can remember.
  14. I don't think he ever used for performance enhancement, I think he used to stay on the field, which he pretty much said. This has been my feeling from the beginning. I don't think we'll see a downtick in performance, I think he may see some more time on the DL. As far as the statement is concerned, I think he gets picked apart regardless of what is said. I think it should have been in person, rather than written, but other than that I don't fault it. I would assume it was written, or at least revised by his PR team. It could have said more, it could have read differently, it doesn't really matter. Braun is Mr. PR, everything is calculated, I honestly have no idea who the guy is. I think he represented his persona well until it collapsed on him. Maybe we'll see the actual Braun now, for good or bad. Maybe he'll continue to only present a PR persona. I don't really care, I just want him to play well for the Brewers.
  15. I find it interesting to read that people still expect accuracy and integrity in journalism. Since the advent of social media, journalism is in real time. There is no fact checking, it's purely sensational, and being the first to get the story. Outside the Lines is fairly well researched, I trust what that show says for the most part. Other than that, news in general is basically TMZ, they just pretend not to be. CNN, ESPN, any media source is basically a sieve for rumors and scuttlebutt. Journalism is dying, people don't want it. By the time something is researched and presented, it's already dated and irrelevant. As far as retractions and such, they are relaying rumors, that's all. Nothing to retract. I really don't think they are slandering Braun by relaying what they hear. Most has been pretty true. The guy did some ugly stuff, lied about it, and made accusations. It's not a stretch to believe anything they say about him at this point, and I don't believe anything he says. Public figures in general now are subject to intense scrutiny. Heroes of the past would have never withstood the media attention these guys get. The days of infallible heroes are over. When every aspect of your life is easy to research and examine, flaws will always be found. Reporters get more attention for bringing athletes down than raising them up. Mantle would never have survived, guys like Tebow; who despite being a lousy QB is a really decent human being, is mocked for his lifestyle.
  16. It's not a terrible time commitment, but the architectural tours on the Chicago River are really cool, maybe take an hour or two. There are lots of little cruises on the Navy Pier too. I would recommend hitting Lou Malnatti's or Geno's East for pizza, the pizza is 80% of the reason to visit Chicago, and much easier and quicker at lunch than at dinner time. Walk Michigan Ave if you want to window shop. Tough to do Chicago in a day. I don't like the Willis Tower, waste of time and money to me (much like the arch in STL).
  17. I dunno, but Carlos Gomez seems like he'd be Gonzo
  18. I use that one too. Basically multiple conversations with me in a week will result in a half dozen Tommy Boy quotes (not necessarily used as quotes, at this point I can fit them into a normal sentence) as well as Simpsons references (all earlier seasons, I haven't watched it in about 5 years)
  19. Tommy Boy, AnchorMan and Old School are quoted on a near daily basis for me. Dumb and Dumber also. Most quoted is Tommy Boy.
  20. Heard on ESPN radio that it was apparently ARod's "inner circle" who released the Biogenesis documents linking Braun. They did it to deflect from ARod. This bothers me. I'm not a fan of what Ryan did, but having another player turn you in so that the focus isn't all on him, isn't kosher. ------------- Previous topic: Braun Suspended for Remainder of 2013 Season: Aaron Rodgers' Reaction
  21. Awesome! I have a very few from that era. I have both Waners, Dickey and Terry, Hoyt, Ferrell, and a Bob O'Farrell (non-HOF, but I believe in that era. I haven't gotten around to doing anything with the ICs and others. My collection for a long time focused on HOF signatures and Robin Yount stuff. I've kinda stopped both for awhile. Hoping to get back into the hobby when my boys are a bit older. Can't wait to see the pictures, do you have everything displayed in your own HOF?
  22. 5 weeks premature-Check Heart Transplant at 5 weeks of age-Check 3 months in the ICU-Check Dozens of nasty illnesses overcome with multiple long hospitalizations-Check First Grader-CHECK! I don't care what doctors say, what specialists say, there is always hope, and kids are the toughest people on the planet! Here's to my big boy's first day of first grade! http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/rwa12/1d605367-7641-4af9-9405-342b383f4abb.jpg
  23. Wow, Jim! Amazing pickups! My rarest by far is a Campanella IC that was pre-accident, I have a few of the "old" guys, but no one tremendously rare. Just wow, can't wait to see the project complete!
  24. Try adding different seasonings to Greek Yogurt to reduce mayo. I use it for my chicken salad. It's a pretty good canvas to do whatever you want with. You don't get the exact mayo experience, but I find it a suitable alternative. Make a spread out of it with some curry, or garlic. Or use it to cut the amount of mayo you use. I don't know about the sodium level in greek yogurt, but for the other health categories, it trumps mayo in just about every way.
  25. All of the marquee records have been broken by PED guys, so I'm not sure what we're protecting anymore? Why should baseball be played like its 1932? Why should we ignore developments in modern medicine? Let these guys use these steroids to heal (their intended purpose), and then send them on a minor league rehab assignment until they pee clean. Or, just let these guys bulk up like football players, and enjoy the home run spectacular that follows. If I'm not mistaken, HGH hasn't been shown to be at all harmful to the body, so why not let these guys bulk up and swing for the oceans? How about this, if you decide to juice, you waive your chances at Cooperstown, but make up for the sorrow with your $35 million dollar/year contract to hit 85 home runs out of Yellowstone? Baseball lost it's ability to wear the white wedding dress sometime ago, why must we try to pretend it is pure?
