  1. He'll start somewhere, if his agent is any good, he'll get him a slightly better deal on his playoff performance. I'm with John in that I didn't hate him as much as most. I gave him a chance, and he's certainly not the reason we're out of the World Series. He is what he is, he's not going to change. We got a good half year, and playoff push from him. I think we consider ourselves lucky, and move along. I won't lose my mind if he is there again next year, but I think they should look to upgrade at the position, if one is available. I wouldn't touch Reyes, unless we sign a good enough backup to play the long stretch of games that he'll miss. Many like the idea of the scrappy Counsell types, my problem with that is; by the time they are established as the scrappy veteran, they are more suited to 2B.
  2. I can't see the Giants letting him walk easily, after what they gave up for him. We may be able to get him, but not as a bargain.
  3. I think it's people's general hatred of Nyjer, not necessarily beast mode. I'm talking about the general public, not Brewer fans. I thought it was fun while it lasted, time to move onto something else.
  4. For those that feel Greinke's splits are the reason to save him for pitching at MP, wouldn't the concept that he is due to lose come into play? I don't really believe in the validity of either of these theories, I think he has just gotten a ton of run support when he pitches there. A few years ago Claudio Vargas looked dominant if you only looked at W-L, he just benefited from getting 135 runs a game in support.
  5. In the middle of "The Visible Man" by Chuck Klosterman. I enjoy his writing style, am amused by how he inserts music into it, and am generally enjoying it. There are better books, but not a bad attempt at a novel by CK.
  6. Sunny out right now, was raining early this morning.
  7. I live down in STL, they hate Morgan like we hate Carpenter. Really the only griping I hear about is centered around Plush, which is what you would expect. They dislike Braun and Fielder, more because of what they can do. On the Uecker front, he is a jerk in person. His right, but he doesn't even make an attempt to be polite "in public".
  8. My sister graduated with her JD a few years ago, and ran into similar problems. She decided to pursue a job in her undergrad major (Econ), and got the boost of the JD to get her in the door with the Federal Reserve. She has been a bank examiner since, and recently transferred to a new branch of the government. She doesn't get to use her JD, but she used it to get a pretty good job. My younger cousin just finished his JD in Florida, he is ambulance chasing, I'm pretty sure.
  9. I read something earlier this year on ESPN.com by one of Morgan's ex-GMs, that pretty much said he is a one year player. He is great if the going is good, but he tends to wear out his welcome. Taken with a grain of salt that his former teams are the Nats and Pirates, and the going was rarely good; I can see his point. I like his schtick, and love his energy, but could see how it could start to drain team mates. He will live on positively in Milwaukee forever for his contributions, but I'll be curious to see how long he actually stays here.
  10. Yount's 3000th hitCanseco's 40/40
  11. I've had very limited success with Fantasy Hockey, teams that look good to me usually don't win. My strategy was to grab guys who are on the power play units, not sure if that makes any sense, but I figure it ups there scoring chances.
  12. Southpaw, thanks for your advice. The shoulder is more of a lingering deal now than acute, I just deal with it. I will keep you up to date on my progress!
  13. Whatever you choose, I'd consider adding a bottle of it to the chili. May help match the flavors. Everyone has different tastes, but I prefer to go with a milder beer with chili. The heat and spices tend to dominate your taste buds, so subtle flavors in beer can be missed. I usually go with a good lager. Anyone have thoughts on Saporro for this?
  14. I'll jump on this. Can't really ask about gyms as i live outside STL. I have a YMCA membership, and the facilities are nice. I'm 33, 6'8" and about 275. I've got some weight to lose. My lower plateau is around 225, and I've only seen this twice in my adult life. Once playing semi-pro v-ball at 19, and once after a deployment to the middle east (130 degree temps shed the pounds). I would like to be around 235-240. I played college basketball a few years ago (and a few years past my prime), and sat around 240. Pretty much my legs were huge, and my upper body was fairly soft. Here is my situation. I have a special needs 4 year old who requires a ton of attention, I have him every other night. I don't have a ton of time to get to the gym, sometimes none. What would be good "bang for the buck" exercises both at the gym and at home? Factors being:1. Workout time of 30-45 minutes would be ideal2. Being gigantic, my knees and ankles are not the strongest.3. Years of Volleyball led to an urepaired torn labrum, that I can live with, I just have limitations. What would be a good way to start shedding the pounds? -Rob
  15. I'm assuming they're introducing a plot point, as has been mentioned, it didn't make sense to me either.
  16. Liked the premiere better than the second episode. I think I chuckled once or twice. I find Kevin funny when he is background, or if he has maybe a scene. Too much Kevin this year so far. Actually, they've given most of my least favorite characters (Kevin and Pam) entirely too much plot. I like Spader, Andy is growing on me, Erin is hit or miss, and Darryl is pretty consistantly good. They seem to have forgotten about Creed, Kelly and Ryan.
  17. This has been my favorite show on TV for years. I enjoyed the first episode, but not sure how far they can run with it. Michael was always socially inept, but the branch was always the most profitable, and he seemed to be a mystifying salesman. He made money. Andy, while goofy, is a horrible sales/businessman. Not sure how they can play that scenario for long, maybe they only envision a season or two like this. I no longer care for Pam's character, the last episode I enjoyed with her was "the wedding". Just don't like her character, at all. Other than that, I enjoy the cast. I still enjoy the show, just not sure where they can really take it at this point.
  18. I appreciate advanced metrics, and feel they should be used as a tool for evaluating players for a team. I think of them more for off season purposes. I believe that is when they are useful, for compiling the team. In season, I think their worth is lessened somewhat. I also feel, and this is true for both sides of the fence, that sometimes the forest is lost for the trees. There is a subset that would have a manager micro-manage to an extreme that is just not realistic in baseball. I think in the same way that traditionalists will waive off some SABR as witchcraft, many SABR folk too easily eliminate the human element of the game. In all aspects of life "Everything in Moderation".
  19. I find it hard to knock Melvin for these 2 trades. He was put into the "all in" situation by Fielder's status, and ownership expectations. The majority of the offensive talent on this team was home grown, they aren't doing anything much different than what the Marlins did when they won their last WS. Build enough to come close, and then go out and acquire the difference makers. The interesting thing to me will be next year when Prince is gone. Do they try to maintain mediocrity, or do they sell chips like Hart, Greinke, and Marcum for pieces of the next championship run? Melvin isn't worried about the future of the franchise at the moment, the future is now. Lawire is a stud, he will most likely hit in this league for a long time, but he couldn't pitch for us, and that is what we needed.
  20. My son is immuno-suppressed. He has, what is most likely, a 24-hour flu bug. It has been 4 days already, and will probably be a few more. It is bugging me that he has to be this miserable. No way to explain to a 4 year old why this is happening.
  21. Any time you can pay $9 for $4 worth of a product, you have to take that chance
  22. PSA or Beckett are the way to go. If things haven't changed, PSA requires a membership. I think it's around $100, but you get 6 gradings with it, may be different now, not sure. Grading helps value certainly, it also gives buyers a better feeling about the cards not being altered or fake. Unless they are high dollar cards, it may not be worth the effort. Can you give specifics of the cards, maybe a scan or photo? Aaron cards from the 50s can vary greatly in value. Beckett is very tough on their vintage grading. I have a '58 Maris RC that would most likely be a PSA 7, that is a BVG 5.5 . Look at them with a critical eye for centering and corners. A popular thought usually with vintage, is that "it looks good for being XX years old". Graders don't really give the age any weight, they judge the condition as if it was new. Grading is mostly done by mail submission, some card shows will have graders; if they aren't PSA, SGA or Beckett, don't waste your money. If you can post a list of the cards with exact years, and a rough idea of what you think the condition is, I'd be happy to give you my thoughts on whether to grade them or not! Rob
  23. Sigh. The immortal Rod Barajas doing the damage today. Going to need another late rally!
  24. I thought I'd seen something like this awhile back, thanks for the link Invader. $20? May be a little high for the knock-off shirt business, if people are going to buy outside of the stadium, it is usually only because they are super-cheap. Good luck with the venture, and I hope it works out!
  25. Made my annual trip up to Milwaukee for a game Sunday, to see the 10 inning win against the Pirates. Had lots of fun, good seats on the Club level, third base side. My thoughts... 1. The BBQ parfait is good, would be infinitely better with real mashed potatoes. Cool idea and look though.2. Visited the "Treasure Hunt" table where they were selling autographed/game used stuff. The game used jerseys were pretty bad. Various middle relievers, coaches, and plenty of Macha/Yost/Peterson stuff to choose from. The balls they had left were Dickerson or McClung. They also had the White hats with the American Flag colors from last year signed. There were about 10 left. Surprisingly, the Mark Rogers was still there. Picked it up for $25. Figure a better chance of that being a keepsake than Mike McClendon.3. Visited the clubhouse store to refresh my Brewers T-Shirts, found out that a $200 purchase came with a free random signed ball, got Yo Gallardo, was pretty thrilled with that. Figured I would wind up with Almonte or someone of his ilk.4. Game was a blast, I thought Morgan's Sac Fly was gone off the bat, and that Kotsay might have ended it in the 9th. Fun to see the standing ovation for CC, not fun to watch him play.
