Thank you, Timber Rattlers, for salvaging Sunday's won-loss record with an unusually late-night roadtrip-ending effort. The Sounds, Shuckers and Mudcats all came up short, with the Biloxi result becoming all too common. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Let's build on the details provided by each affiliate in the report below. Transactions: Milwaukee Brewers optioned OF Joey Wiemer to Nashville Sounds. Milwaukee Brewers recalled 2B Oliver Dunn from Nashville Sounds. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Charlotte (White Sox) 4, Nashville 3 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Vihuelas Come Up Just Short in Series Finale - Nashville gets within a run, fails to come up with big hit in 4-3 loss to Charlotte Always so many nuggets within the Nashville game summary. Via our forum thread, it wasn't a sparkling defensive afternoon for Tyler Black at first base. For nearly any other big-league organization, based on his 2024 performance thus far, southpaw reliever Rob Zastryzny would have been added to a 40-man and 26-man roster by now. But as our Matthew Trueblood wrote on Sunday morning, the Brewers are already as well-positioned from the port side of the bullpen as any team. At this moment, a rough break for Zastryzny (and yes, I continue to utilize copy and paste to name him rather than any attempt at free form typing). Additional video clip highlights via the Sounds "X" feed. One walk and one HBP in 5.1 IP represents progress for RHP Tyler Woessner in his AAA orientation. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 8, Biloxi 4 Box Score and Game Log Late Push from Barons Spoils Shuckers Comeback Attempt in Series Finale - Shuckers battle back from 3-1 deficit, five-run eighth leads Barons to victory The Shuckers have a chance at a historically frightful homestand, as the team is only half-way through a 12-game stretch, winless thus far. This was the capper of six video clips posted by the team: See the others here. RH starter Bradley Blalock shook off the rust of an idle MLB call-up, walking one and fanning one in 4.1 innings, his line aided by additional yeoman's work by RH reliever Kaleb Bowman. Blalock has fanned only 30 in 40 AA innings (eight starts). Team RISP: 3-for-16. Team LOB: 13. The Shuckers drew nine walks, three by catcher Darrien Miller, who also reached via his career-long penchant of getting plunked. Biloxi's eight hits included the Wilken home run above and an Ernesto Martinez, Jr. double. Need to plate more than four runs. Outfielder Carlos D. Rodriguez, playing center field here, singled twice and walked twice, lifting his 2024 line to .320/.407/.376. Despite the lack of pop, Rodriguez is set to be a popular minor league free agent target, since he won't even turn 24 years old until December. Will the Brewers add Rodriguez to the 40-man roster to prevent him from moving on? It's more likely they'll try to entice him with an enhanced salary to sign a new minor league pact for 2025, a la Ernesto Martinez and Harold Chirino last fall. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Wisconsin 9, South Bend (Cubs) 8, 11 innings Box Score and Game Log Rattlers Survive 11-Inning Test of Nerves with South Bend - Wisconsin hangs on for 9-8 win in series finale with Cubs VIDEO: Brewers No. 22 prospect Jadher Areinamo tallies a season-high four RBIs with three hits and a stolen base for High-A Wisconsin I've been doing this long enough to know that when the Timber Rattlers are involved in a wild affair like this, particularly a road game when video is very limited, don't try and recreate excitement here within the notes. Simply defer to Chris Mehring's detailed write-up linked above. What a crazy way for RHP Edwin Jimenez (eight appearances, now two in relief) to move to 7-0 on the season. Regarding the Jimenez injury that Chris referred to, our Joseph Zarr was watching live and documented things starting here, for an MiLB TV archive subscribers can find here. This is such a cool paragraph via Chris, he's simply the best in the business (Cornielle's not shabby, either): The Cubs (18-27) did something in the bottom of the third against Wisconsin starting pitcher Alexander Cornielle that no other team had done this month. They scored a run. Cornielle’s scoreless inning streak ended at 20-2/3 innings on a two-out, RBI single by Pedro Ramirez. That overnight bus ride home must have been so sweet. As we noted yesterday, no getaway day game offered by South Bend, and then the contest runs nearly three and a half hours. Final: Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 8, Carolina 7 Box Score and Game Log Late Rally Lifts Myrtle Beach Past Mudcats Team RISP: 3-for-18. Team LOB: 11. So often RISP is the unheralded story of these games. The Mudcats were successful on all seven of their stolen base attempts, including three by Yhoswar Garcia, who saw action in both left and center field in this one. Garcia shifted to center because the starter there, Yophery Rodriguez, was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the 4th. Rodriguez had caught a flyout for the first out in the top of the 4th. I reviewed the MiLB TV subscriber archive at the 02:14:00 hour/minute mark here, and there was absolutely nothing unusual about the can-of-corn catch. Was Rodriguez under the weather? Perhaps we'll find out down the road later this week, but it's more likely that unless there is an injured list stint of note, we won't find out. Catch both Luis Castillo home runs within this double-tweet: Find it hilarious the team capitalized WATCHES after I had recently made note of Castillo's proclivity for admiring his work. The young man (20 years old all season) signed for $62,500 out of the Dominican Republic in 2021, so he fell in that middle area well under bonus baby territory, but not an afterthought signing either. Castillo's 25 RBI trails only Yophery's 28 on the club, while his seven blasts are three more than any other Mudcat. The collection of Carolina pitchers hit two batters and threw six wild pitches. Low-A and rookie-level box scores (Maryvale off on Sunday) can be so inviting. I'm really hoping you all took in yesterday's Link Report as well, where I wrote: "He (Juan Baez) is thoroughly fascinating and entertaining, not to mention eminently productive. Did I mention he's still just 18 years old?" First home run for Juan at this level, seven previous blasts in the Dominican (3) and Maryvale (4) in similar sample sizes. We will report on the Monday Maryvale game as part of a two-game update within the Link Report detailing Tuesday's games. This past week has brought back memories of years gone by providing near daily updates for you, but I now gladly welcome back Joseph and Daniel for their outstanding work before I sit back in the passenger's seat until my usual weekend shifts. Victories for fans on-site can be exhilarating for those that stay in their seats until the final out, right Nashville? Victories can be frustrating for fans who may not find their seats until the second inning and miss all of the offensive fun, right Zebulon? For the final home team of this report in Biloxi, well, at least fans had the chance to purchase amazing new gear to distract them from action on the field. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Let's get things started with our daily review, including a Wisconsin road game that thankfully the Appleton fans weren't directly subjected to. It was a day of high high's and low low's in the system, to be sure. Transactions: Milwaukee Brewers traded RHP Thyago Vieira and RHP Aneuris Rodriguez to Baltimore Orioles for RHP Garrett Stallings (Stallings assigned to Nashville). Nashville Sounds activated 2B Patrick Dorrian from the 7-day injured list (Dorrian will look for a fresh start to his 2024, 6-for-68 thus far, coming off a useful .778 OPS with the Sounds last year) The Brewers dipped into their deep reserve of "Rodriguez" talent, reducing the Rodriguez level from eleven to ten players. As the player page linked above indicates, Aneuris is a Dominican native who will be turning 20 years old in June. Rodriguez signed in March of 2022, and thus was a post-batch addition from the traditional large pool of international signees. He's been effective enough through two Dominican Summer League campaigns, including a good number of starting assignments. His strikeout pitch is working in this spring's stateside debut. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Charlotte (White Sox) 3 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Roller's Walk-Off Homer Gives Sounds Fifth Straight Win Over Charlotte - Outfielder’s two-run blast in ninth inning gives Nashville 5-3 decision in thriller Let's start with the ending - Supplementing the fine game summary you just read, the Nashville "X" feed includes Aaron Ashby and the obligatory (and welcome) Brewer Hicklen highlights. Progress made here for Ashby, the key will be what comes next, can consistency and further improvement follow? Abner Uribe's box score line looks fine on the surface, but thanks to our forum contributor wiguy94 we learn it wasn't an ideal outing. Just keep plugging Tyler Black in at first base day in, day out, grow those defensive repetitions. Can we see Black being moved at the deadline for pitching? Does he have a long-term home with the big-league Crew? Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 7, Biloxi 1 Box Score and Game Log Beach Chicken Debut Spoiled by Barons - Biloxi’s bullpen allows one run over six innings, Boeve tallies multi-hit effort When I started this gig in 2001, little did I think I'd by typing "Beach Chickens" at any point. The amazing seagull-themed logo was certainly the highlight of Biloxi's night. The Shuckers scraped out four singles and two walks. One looks at the bottom of the Biloxi order in particular (Yerzy, Sparks, Acosta) and sighs, but Ethan Murray and Zavier Warren weren't tantalizing production as bench options Saturday, either. For starter TJ Shook, this awesome May 7th outing seems so long ago. LH middle reliever Russell Smith tossed three hitless/scoreless (three walks, one HBP), and RH closer Justin Yeager, getting work in, allowed three singles in the 9th but pitched his way out of it. The flip-flops, the umbrella beverage, the color palette, thank you, kind Beach Chicken, for wonderfully distracting us from recent results on the field. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: South Bend (Cubs) 6, Wisconsin 1 Box Score and Game Log South Bend’s Big Second Inning Beats Wisconsin - Cubs top Rattlers 13-1 to clinch series The 27-17 Timber Rattlers have earned the right to have the occasional super-clunker. This qualifies. Similar to the Shuckers game, relievers' efforts made the box score review less ugly. First baseman Tayden Hall's bump to High-A is not off to a flying start - 7-for-47 (one double). Seven walks vs. nine K's show us that BABIP is in play. It was .463 with Carolina to start the year and it's .179 with the T-Rats. Shake it off, Tayden (and the T-Rats after this one). Final: Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 3 Box Score and Game Log Hot Start Lifts Mudcats Past Pelicans Thank you Mudcats, for offsetting some of the Cub-related pain from South Bend this week as noted above. If the game log descriptions are to be believed from Zebulon, then that four-run Carolina first inning must have really been something, check it out to see the words "line drive" or "lined out" peppered throughout. 21-year-old RHP Yorman Galindez has made seven starts in 2024, and only one was off-putting (May 11th - 3.1 IP, 4 R, 4 BB's). Galindez now sports a 3.16 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 42 K's in 25.2 innings. This got me going, I was dragging there for a bit: 18-year-old Juan Baez (yes, Baez will be 19 in June, but did we forget that he's only been 18?) was 4-for-4 with a double. That gave the antsy $10,000 signing plenty of time to experiment on the basepaths as only Baez can. He netted both his 7th successful steal and his 9th not-so-successful attempt. In 171 plate appearances Baez has walked only 11 times, just 6.4%. But wait, he has only struck out 11 times, and I don't have to calculate that percentage for you! There's no one quite like Baez in the system. He is thoroughly fascinating and entertaining, not to mention eminently productive. Did I mention he's still just 18 years old? ACL Padres 9, ACL Brewers 5, seven innings as scheduled Box Score and Game Log This was an early game in the desert, and it gave my co-worker Daniel a chance to chime in on the video-free, audio-free, gameday developments via our forum, which I'll share verbatim here: The ACL Brewers and ACL Padres are squaring off for the 2nd straight day, with the Brewers still (apparently) having only one healthy position player on the bench (Alastre yesterday, Lameda today). CF Antony Gomez has homered for a 2nd straight day. Well done to him. RHP Felipe de los Santos and his incoming 23.63 ERA got the start. But 3 ER in 1.2 IP actually lowered his season ERA (heaven help us). 21-year-old RHP Dencer Geraldo made his stateside debut and first game action since June 10 last year: 3 ER in 0.1 IP. Gulp. We’ve hit 6 Padres by HBPs. Oh my. We’re actually out-hitting them (the singles, doubles, triples, homers type) 5-to-3, but trail 8-to-4. RF Gery Holguin has 3 singles to lift his average to .220. He was also picked off. Yes, our opponents have 8 runs on 3 hits. And now 1B Johan Barrios has homered, giving him 3 in 2 days. I’m guessing he was dealing with some sort of injury to start this ACL season, as his playing time was oddly limited. The ACL games yesterday and today are both 7-inning affairs, by the way. We trail 8-5 in the top of the 6th inning. NOTE: It was a 1-2-3 final frame in the 7th for the now 6-10 A-Crew. It's a traditional four-pack of games Sunday. Those naughty South Bend Cubs have scheduled a 6:00 PM Central game to prevent the Timber Rattlers from getting a head start on their return home for Tuesday action. That does give you the opportunity to check out Chris Mehring's call this evening after the parent club completes the Fenway sweep. All the various game times can be found at the link below, it's late afternoon action in Nashville and Biloxi as well. Have you had enough of yours truly this week? I hope not, because the overtime is in high gear, and I'll be back for your Monday AM holiday review. Talk to you then and enjoy your Sunday!
